In my car I have a Uniden PRO401HH hand held with the same BNC to PL-259 connectors you have, and the Wilson Little Wil antenna. I had a cheap Scoshe magnet mount antenna but the SWR's were so high I could only listen or else I'd risk burning out my radio. I just made a 4700 mile road trip across the US and back but I didn't get much range from the cheap antenna. I just got the Wilson antenna today and I heard people talking 8-10 miles up the highway from where I was. The CB came in handy on my road trip, we got directions to bypass an accident that had traffic at a stand still and also the trucks called out a few police that were not visible until you passed them. These are good in a pinch or if you are in a rental, or let a buddy borrow it when he is driving near you so you can keep in contact.

Wow what a miracle it didnt use 12volt till hit the key genius right there ty would never guess the 12v only works with the 12 turned on thanks homeboy
I ran a uniden pro401hh hand held to a mag mount wilson 1000 for a little bit. Actually did really good for a $50 hand held. Glad it came with a 12v car plug. It will go through batteries if you talk a lot. If you don’t want to mount a radio or antenna this is a great option. That new hand held president has that comes with a rechargeable battery and basically everything you need to hook it up to you car is a great option also. What matters the most is the antenna. The Wilson little will does good for its size. But since you’re going with a magnet mount and it’s not going to be there permanently you might as well go for the mag mount Wilson 1000. I’ve had both the little will and currently have the 1000. There is a pretty big difference between the two. The receive is a lot better and gets out a little further also.
I have a Uniden 401 on the way and already had the roof mount antenna and adapter. I like the simpleness of the Uniden 401. It will be used for road trips maybe twice a year. I didnt want to spend a lot for something that wont get used very often.
@@bucknakedbullfrog Just make sure you still tune your antenna SWR. Of course you’ll need a external meter cause that handheld doesn’t have one built in. But other than that it will work as good as any other stock 4w cb radio.
Don`t Touch The Antenna While You Are Tranceiving, It's Not Good for the Range or interference, Maybe You Ain`t Getting That Problem. With Your Setup, But I Always Have It. Such A Cool And Informative Video! You can Use That radio As A Car radio, So Brilliant

The rubber ducky antenna is basically a dummy load and is the worst possible antenna to use. A good mag mount antenna (lil Will for example) would be the best. And yes, you should still check your match, even with a walkie talkie! The average real world output of most CB walkies is around 1/2 watt on low and 2 to 3 watts on high. All that said, this is a really good video!
Man, very educational! I am a full-time RVer and got caught on a two lane highway where a horse trailer pulled by a pick-up jack knifed in the mountains. Both rigs were pinned between rocks on both sides of the highway. They had to get another horse trailer up there, offload the horses, before they could even start working on removing the vehicles. 3 hours later!!! traffic was finally moving again. Turns out the driver had a medical emergency so they had to deal with that as well. THAT was the day I decided to get a handheld CB because for 3 hours I knew nothing. Fortunately I was hanging out in the RV waiting to hear traffic move again. So now I have a handheld CB and can't wait to use it. I'm watching videos to learn all I can. So question, you pulled off the stubby antenna and put a coaxial cable on the antenna mount -where does that cable go to? (An antenna on the roof of your truck? If so, I would have liked to see that.
Im about to start mentoring students on my truck, I already have a CB Setup on my truck. I think I’m gonna grab one of these to use for verbal commands when I’m outside the truck helping them backup, in addition to hand signals.
I think it would work great for that. I have 2 and one is not being used. If i had a way to get it to you I'd be happy to give it to you. Do you have Instagram?
@@CFarmer that’s a really nice offer & very kind of you. I appreciate it! Unfortunately I am not on any form of social media. I was born in 85, last generation of kids who grew up playing outside. I’m a 35yr old dinosaur who is, stuck in my ways, I guess. I saw a handheld cobra in the Love‘s (not sure the exact model) it was only $60 & I probably have enough points accumulated to get it for free or next to it. Thanks again for the thoughtfulness though, god bless you.
Was big in CB back in the day. Did twin co phased duals on one car. Right off the back bumper on top of the tailpipes! Tuning SWR was tricky! Two HQ27s. QDs. Um, and I didn't say I had a 35W linear... ;)
@@CFarmer Also cool is the 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP I drive now has a 40ch SSB rig I custom installed in the dash (hidden underneath the ashtray in the back, only the faceplate shows) with a custom made antenna mount over the right tailpipe (1/4" x 1.25" aluminum) with QDs so I can switch antennas. It's strong enough to hold a 9' SS whip at highway speeds (but I only use the 9' for fixed coms). 2005 Grand Prix GT2 uses the Midland rig in your vid with a mag mount ant. Got the ext speak/mic for it too! Love the radio BTW! AND learned a few things about it watching your vid! I had a Rat Shack unit for years that looks nearly identical (probably rebranded Midland rig) it finally died and I got the new one. Also I have a 40 ch SSB base at home with a 1/4 wave ground plane. And either a D-104 or Turner Super Sidekick depending on the mood I'm in at the time! ;)

And I also like the radiology 27 it's real compact and small and it's got a cigarette lighter adapter I think you would like that one too it's a tiny mobile 4 in x 4 in
I can try, pretty busy until after New Year's. It's just a lil Will Wilson magnet mount. I stuck it in center, ran coax in the door and connected to cb.i will try to make one soon
Great information in this vid...thank you, TRUCKERS. Is there a way to test the mic on these? I keep asking for radio check and get no response. This is when I have the rooftop antenna hooked up as well. Thanks"
you should really use a BNC to SO239 PIGTAIL adapter, this route that you have can put strain on the BNC connector on the radio, and break the solder connection.
Hi, saw your video as I needed something smaller in my crowded half-ton Frontier pick up. I was concerned about your comment that even the Wilson antenna gave you only a mile or two transmitting distance. Technically that shouldn't be the case as the specs say it's a full 4 watts which is the maximum legal power for any CB radio. I still went ahead to purchase it through the Cobra site for only $89 as you said. I think you may need to check the SWR and adjust your Wilson to match the Cobra better. I fully expect this to perform as well as a full-size CB with my K40 magnet mount antenna after I adjust the SWR. Transmission propagation can be tricky. If your in a hilly or mountainous area expect little results. Even the type of vehicle makes a big difference. My bigger pickup truck has more metal under the antenna so my understanding is that the ground plane is better as opposed to a small subcompact car.
I think you're right. I swapped the old Wilson for a stryker and it did better but i never really got it dialed in. I got tired of pulling the magnet off going thru carwash and few other places. I just have the radio with short stock antena now and it's ok but not a lot of range. Helps in traffic jams
@@CFarmer Just fyi.... the magnet base can stay on the car as you can just unscrew the mast part. I have to do it every time I pull the truck out of the garage. I'm just used to doing it.
BNC to SO-239 adapter. Those rubber duck antennas are great for surviving getting whacked on things but are just about the worst possible antennas. Getting the antenna outside the vehicle will be a big improvement even if you use the included rubber duck with a mag mount. A normal size CB antenna will give even better performance.
Great review. I am trying to decide if I want to go with this setup or a cobra 18wxst ii. I was originally leaning towards that radio but now that I found this one with the antenna. I might go with this one since it’s portable.i just want it in my pickup truck. Not a semi.
Been wanting to get one of these (or the most recent version anyway) to lend to my buddies when need be to communicate with the mobile unit in my car.. but man oh man, they're like $175 at Canadian Tire.. that's in CAD of course but Jesus I don't know if I could justify paying that much.. I'll just stick with the used stuff I have for now. Just ordered a male RCA-to-female UHF adapter to use my old Realistic walkie talkie with a mobile antenna
I'm not very familiar with the HGA1500 but i had to use this adapter to connect my little Wilson and i think there the same Coaxial Adapter amzn.to/3cA3cxP
Today we have 2k21 .. but in euroope CB and Habdheld CB are very important like Emcom for normally people. In polish mountiain we have 7 channel like Mountain info . On europe is more Parrot and Links Internet gates . CB--internet--CB . Handheld is Sure . Many people have 19 channel on the road . 16 on the offroad 4x4=16 . 9 channel Ham radio amateurs RX like Emergency CQ ... CB handheld is Alive in Europe .. we have to crossbander CB/ UHf /VHF on the high buildings or Mountain like Tatra or Karpatia. CB is alive from 1970's to Today . 73!
I haven't used ssb in years. I just put this together for something quick, cheap and portable. My last good setup was a Ranger 2950 with a 250 Texas Star but it was stolen. I wanted to keep this easy ro hide
It does work with power cord/ no batteries. Batteries died and that's how I've been running it for a month or so. It has a Adapter with it for rechargeable battery charging but i keep forgetting to buy the rechargeables
Did you have to tune your setup with an swr meter. I’m down in Midland/Odessa so running this in my four wheeler for personal and work would be a huge help.
What do you mean by "high-power radios"? SSB? Regular CB is capped at 4 watts, regardless of whether the radio is handheld or not. SSB allows for up to 12 watts, but CBs capable of SSB are less common, I don't think there are any handhelds capable of receiving and transmitting on SSB.
I've never seen a handheld capable of ssb either. Regular cb is capped at 4 watts. I've had a few with built in amplifiers. RCI 2970 was my favorite. I wasn't very specific but im thinking I referenced high power radios thinking of that one. Sorry for the confusion. I should have been more specific
@@CFarmer ah, no worries. The FCC might dislike it when people use CB amplifiers, but I can see why people would want to extend the range since there are probably more people using CB on the road versus ham.
@@CFarmer seems to get out about the one you described, just tried it in my truck so far, talked to a guy behind me about 1/2 a mile, I think it would do better if he would have been in front of me, by truck I'm taking about a semi with a sleeper. My coax is to short to connect to my antenna and be able to talk, probably going to get a mic for it then I can connect and be able to try it, my thinking was 4 watts, same as cb, got it out of curiosity
I hope after three years you have found the Midland 75-822 handheld is the way to go. It has a dual pigtail connection with a cigarette lighter plug and PL256 adapter for connecting to an external antenna. Operates very easily, just get a good mag mount antenna like the, Wilson 1000, K40, or Tram 3500 to get max range. So far I have been using a K30 antenna for a number of year's and can get across town with no problem.

For some reason mine kept loosing distance so i changed to the stryker magnet mount but didn't notice much difference
Does this model have a caddy you can mount in the truck?
Glad you mentioned the RF to BNC adapter.
Good Information and very nicely delivered. Thank You
Thank you!
Haven’t been able to find any info about how the magnetic mount antenna is wired. Is it hard wiring that has to be installed (do I have to drill?)
you should really use a BNC to SO239 PIGTAIL adapter, this route that you have can put strain on the BNC connector on the radio, and break the solder connection.
I haven't tried that. I had about a week i was constantly taking it on and off and got aggravated and took it completley off
Is it ok to run the coax from the roof mount on the side of the door and close it or will that damage the cable and reception?
BNC to SO-239 adapter.
Those rubber duck antennas are great for surviving getting whacked on things but are just about the worst possible antennas. Getting the antenna outside the vehicle will be a big improvement even if you use the included rubber duck with a mag mount. A normal size CB antenna will give even better performance.
i agree, worked good for me for about a year now.about ready for a change
Great review. I am trying to decide if I want to go with this setup or a cobra 18wxst ii. I was originally leaning towards that radio but now that I found this one with the antenna. I might go with this one since it’s portable.i just want it in my pickup truck. Not a semi.
It's still working good for me. Portability is still the best part of it. Completley out and in another vehicle in 5 mins
I did buy one & the magnet mount, but I think I need to go with the Wilson. Thank you
Very helpful and informative video!
Is it weather proof and how loud is it. I'm getting it for my bike, plus is is there a setup for it for a mic and speakers.
It does have a external mic and speaker connector but i have no idea if it's weather proof. I'm thinking it's not but I'll have to look into it
Been wanting to get one of these (or the most recent version anyway) to lend to my buddies when need be to communicate with the mobile unit in my car.. but man oh man, they're like $175 at Canadian Tire.. that's in CAD of course but Jesus I don't know if I could justify paying that much.. I'll just stick with the used stuff I have for now. Just ordered a male RCA-to-female UHF adapter to use my old Realistic walkie talkie with a mobile antenna
Yea, they have their purpose but seems like everything getting so expensive
Some excellent information there.
Thanks.
Thank you! Thank you for your comment!
Just purchased cobra HH50 and cobraHG A1500 antenna. How do I connect antenna cable to CB?
I'm not very familiar with the HGA1500 but i had to use this adapter to connect my little Wilson and i think there the same

Thanks for the information looking to get one for my truck doing overnight.
Anytime, hope it helped
Are you using a lil wilson with that handheld
Great vid thanks for the info does the wilson have to be tuned or is it good to go
Good tips, appreciate the real world advice, great content
Absolutley, i know cb is very valuable to me but i had no idea they were still used all over a much as they are
Adapter looks like BNC --> SO-239. Nice setup. Do you use SSB at all, or is CB radio more a utility on the road for you?
I haven't used ssb in years. I just put this together for something quick, cheap and portable. My last good setup was a Ranger 2950 with a 250 Texas Star but it was stolen. I wanted to keep this easy ro hide
In Canada I just paid 250. For the cobra road trip. No where’s near 89.
O dang, that's crazy
Can you run this unit with the power cord alone or do you need to have the batteries in it as well?
It does work with power cord/ no batteries. Batteries died and that's how I've been running it for a month or so. It has a Adapter with it for rechargeable battery charging but i keep forgetting to buy the rechargeables
Do you have to tune this thing at all?
Thanks for all the advices Great video
Thank You!
Do you have to have an antenna for this type?
You don't have to buy an external antenna definitely helps
Did you have to tune your setup with an swr meter.
I’m down in Midland/Odessa so running this in my four wheeler for personal and work would be a huge help.
It would be a good ideas but I didn't.
I’m new to the handheld CB radio, is there an adaptable antenna that you can buy that can go atleast 5 miles?
There might be but I'm not sure what it would be
How do you set the squelch on it. do you want it quiet or to have static
Very good video thank you sir.
Thank you!
I like the original 38WXST handheld better. Thankfully president makes the Randy handheld now. Amazing little rig.
Thank you! I'll have to check that out
@@CFarmerit's FM now so even better. The range on it even just using included duck is very surprising.
How far will I be able to talk to someone? Can I talk to someone real far away?
I have a Midland handheld hooked up to a wilson 1000 on the balcony on my 4th floor apt I can talk to people at the truck stop 10 miles away
My setup would only do 2.5 miles tops on a good day and seems to be getting shorter over time
@@CFarmer I mean I can talk to the truck stop 10 miles away you can hear some pretty interesting stuff at truck stops at night
I'm sorry, i misunderstood. Lol I'm sure you do. No telling what you'll hear
C Farmer...is there a pouch that can facilitate this hand held radio,so it can be latched to an assault vest or an combat duty belt?
Not sure, but it does have a belt clip on the back if that helps
@@CFarmer...no,but thanks.I will find something convenient.
not really sure what the BnC connector was for? new to this, thanks
The BNC connector is an adapter to connect the Wilson magnet mount to the connector on the handheld cb radio.
Very cool. I enjoyed the video. If you have a channel you prefer to use, let us know. I've been finding number 6 and number 19 fun to listen to.
Thank you! i will but i usually stay on 19
how come your steering wheel is on the left?
Was using front facing camera on my phone and it reverses picture. I didn't notice it until after video was uploaded
How do you run wire for intena. Out the window???
I closed the back passenger door on it
Is that a righthand drive vehicle..????..Looks like one...
It's not but i noticed if i use the front camera on my phone it really looks like one
Thanks! Very Helpful.
Thank you!
Thank you, great 👍 video
Thank you!
We use a 19 meter Ham Radio also have CB
I used to run a 2970 ranger in my younger days. Loved that radio until it was stolen. If i remember right it was a ham converted
Where do I find this adapter? Link please

Does this have a jack to add a mic?
It does
Nice video, and thanks for the links.
Thank you!
@@CFarmer your welcome , my cb will be here in 2 days, again thanks man.
Hope you like it,ii have a friend that just ordered one too.i would buy it again
Very informative, thank you ✊
Thank you for your comment!
Very good presentation.
Just got a president randy, 4 watts, smaller and rechargeable
That's a good looking radio. Let me know how it does. I may have to try one myself
Ty for this informative video
Yes sir, thank you
I hope after three years you have found the Midland 75-822 handheld is the way to go.
Yea i love it.
