Thanks for posting these antenna results! For highway travel, even the rubber ducky antenna is fine for listening to truckers to find out about traffic issues. A mag mounted antenna works great too. 73,WR4i
I used the duck a lot with a Midland 75-785 when I was in high school so much and did fine in suburban California out to like a mile. With the Cobra HA-TA I got as an upgrade it was able to do 2 miles easy over all the houses.
Great video, excellent test. I purchased a Uniden pro HH401, CB handheld, and I didn't waste time, I purchased the same Hysaykra 4ft+ telescopic antenna, and 2800mh rechargeable batteries my radio getting awesome range now.
I have an old radio shack walkie-talkie 40 channel it's got a huge final in it which has its own heat sink! It has a telescopic antenna and I was able to talk one quiet night to my friend in this pickup truck 15 MILES AWAY!
Fantastic video!! VERY helpful. I appreciated your extremely informative testing. I was also actually surprised by the rubber duck antenna and not very impressed with the cobra but extremely impressed with the Hyshikra. Thank you for your efforts!!
Why not try a longwire like the ham radio guy's use, cut the wire to match the frequency you're using then if you can put an antenna tuner into it with an swr meter to tune it perfectly......moonraker mirical whip is good antenna tuner i use one with the correct adapters to fit some of my radios.
I bought one of those Hyshikra antennas for my cheap uniden handheld and was very surprised at the difference in both transmit and receive. It’s like night and day compared to the rubber ducky it comes with. I can have the rubber ducky on and not hear anyone then put the hyshikra on and start picking up people. For the price you can’t beat it.
The radio makes a big difference. Testing with president randy especially in FM mode and it puts out a far stronger signal than the radio in this video and most other handhelds surprisingly. The thing performs amazingly well. At 7 miles with hyshrika to base it pegged like s6 to 7.
I just purchased a 46 inch foldable flexible antenna for my Midland walkie-talkie.. I have a telescopic antenna for my Cherokee walkie-talkie.. both walkie talkies have been modified to transmit on free band! (Above channel 40 just below 10 m... And below channel One just above 12 m).. people have been transmitting on free band since the 1960s without any problems from Uncle Charlie
NIce! I too have a Midland that has low and high bands on it. 120 channels . I plan to do a video on it some time. Actually I have 2 , a 77-810 and a 75-822 both with 120 chnnels. thanks for watching.
NOTE: While range testing & antenna design/efficiency is interesting and very important, the quality, level and clarity of modulation is extremely important. Some CB walkie talkies have horrible/substandard microphones and they should be weeded out as well.
It's always good get out there and field test antennas cb or Ham portable. The rubber duckie antennas are good for convince within a mile or less.. If you attach a thin piece wire 9ft wire onto ground side of BNC connector ( outter side) let it drape down to ground. this will give you a counter poise and will bring up TX/RX signal on all antennas transmissions. Hey keep up good work you can also set up mini 40 Mobil on a 7 amp hour 12v gel cell battery at camp sight onto a vertical 102 fiber galss whip with homemade 3/8 bracket add some ground planes and take walk with talkie! Thankz for video.
Trans Canada radio 5322 Rob is the name I live in Toronto Ontario Canada I'm in the Danforth village I have a 40ch hand held TRC221. With that radio I made a contact with a base station at Pape and Mortimer which is about two and a half miles by way the crow flies from my house it doesn't seem as impressive as you would expect but in a city like Toronto there are 120 houses between me and that base station and I still hit his meter 9.5 s units ya whoo! So in closing don't give up on cb radio it's very much alive in Toronto so keep on breaking 73s to all of you listening
Yes those longer antennas work great but I can't be walking around with a 4 foot antenna sticking out of my backpack or off my belt. Is there anything in between these like a longer rubber duck? It would not be as good as the 4 footers but at least it would be usable to use while on the trail. Thanks for taking the time to make the great video!
I wonder if there would be any improvement if you attached a wire to the bnc connection to act as a ground plane. I've watched other videos and they say it helps. Would be nice to see a comparison done like you did here. Great job!
I just ordered an Albrecht ae 2990 and plan on using it portable whenever I'm outdoors. I'm either going to buy or make a T2LT antenna to pair with it. They are very popular in the UK for portable DX. Haven't seen or heard of it much here in the US. I don't know why, seems like a fun way to communicate to me.

A home made wire diapole antenna will really do a great job if your stationary or at camp..Vert. for local and Hoz for DX.. Super Easy To Build and Use
I have all those antennas and I am not impressed with the Cobra Overpriced 27" Antenna at all. I consider it a Rip Off but the 51" Antenna just works best.
@@ChrisOakesCOit's more than likely just his base station antenna height. As when talking handheld to handheld when I used to use one alot 10 years ago it bumped my range from 1-2 miles to 4. I like the 27 inch flex whip Bell's cb offers as an add-on option for the hh50wxst listing (though you can actually buy it separately). More durable so I don't have to worry with it as much.
Shep 73‘s have a good test it all depends the location the wire around buildings that was a good test though I like it I go by shepfc1 on side band I live in Indiana
Back in the day you'd never use channel 14 for something like that. Channel 14 was the calling channel and there was just too much traffic. I can't imagine what the big cities were like but I was out in the countryside and channel 14 was full of people calling all day and all night. PS would I be right in thinking handheld CBs have drastically improved? We had a 40 channel handheld with rubberduck and we had a base station with Thunderpole aerial strapped to our chimney with bailer twine. The rubber duckie radio only had a one-mile range, as you say. But the base station (which was actually a car radio with adaptor) easily reached 5 miles all around and as far as 12-15 miles on occasion.
