Georgia is on my bucket list for sure. I lived in Russia in the early 90s and had Georgian friends. The food and wine were awesome and so were my friends.

Just spent 24 days in Georgia in September and October 2022. I would advise you visit there before making a decision. The positives: Major freeway project with tunnels and bridges through the mountain range dividing western and eastern Georgia will in the future maybe 2 years or so, greatly improve travel and transport of goods between the ports on the west side and eastern Georgia. Bad news for me was travel across the mountains presently is about 2 hours of stop and go in road construction and bad roads. Lots of impatient drivers passing with low sight distance. The country reminded me of Washington State in the USA except some subtropical foliage on the west side of the country. Wet and green on the west side and dry as a bone except when it rains on the east side of the country. Aggressive drivers with little regard for common traffic laws, (ok i am grousing a bit here since i got a 20 lari ticket for crossing a white line on the road which is about $7USD but honestly after watching drivers race in downtown Tbilisi to about 70mph in a 60kph road (36mph speed limit) and all the other aggressive actions they would take i felt a little bit aggrieved since the cops totally ignored all of these lawless actions) constant vigilance is important to avoid accidents and even to avoid citizens who will be walking on the roads sometimes with their backs to the traffic. When you are a pedestrian it behooves you to keep aware as drivers have no compunction of continuing to barrel towards you when you are on a crosswalk. Let's talk about cows. They are on the roads and even on the freeway keep aware constantly as they may cross in front of you even when you are traveling at 110kph. In smaller cities they will definitely be a danger of blocking the roads along with pigs, goats, sheep and dogs. For some strange reason dogs are laying around on streets and sidewalks sleeping most of the time and even in front of entrances to business buildings. Lots of construction going on. In Batumi i asked a local when the tourist season was, I was told summer time. Weather changed abruptly in early October from 80s fahrenheit to 60s fahrenheit big storm came in increasing the surf from calm to 5 to 6 foot wave action at the beach on the black sea no longer swimmable. Don't think this country would be a good winter time place if you are looking for sunny or beach swimming weather. The local also told me that foreigners were the ones buying the overbuilding of the new apartments. Parking is deficient in Tbilisi and in Batumi. Traffic is pretty bad in Tbilisi especially. Many of the buildings are run down and unattractive to look at. I stayed in an upscale hotel in Batumi and my view out the window was of a high rise building that was abandoned after the foundation was made with rebar sticking up along with a pile of construction debris that had never been hauled away. There is a lack of sidewalks in the cities both Batumi and Tbilisi. The path to the sea in Batumi which was about 4 blocks from my hotel was muddy since it wasn't concrete or made nice. Lots of old soviet union apartments and concrete buildings with tin roofs. Better than shacks i have seen in other countries like Indonesia but definitely not attractive. Watch your step while walking on the sidewalks that do exist in Batumi or in Tbilisi since there can be uncovered holes and broken and uneven surfaces. Let's talk about bathrooms. They are almost nonexistent except perhaps in restaurants and in the malls. When and if you do find a public one, i found 1 in Batumi and 1 in Tbilisi after much walking, you have to pay 2 lari to use it. Better keep change on you if you do want to use one, the one in Tbilisi at the park close to some of the images on this video is not manned and you cannot use paper money to access it. The one by the hostel in Batumi does have an attendant so you probably wouldn't have a problem giving her paper money to use the bathroom there. Russians were flooding into the country to the tune of about 1,000,000 of them creating a 3 day backup at the border with Georgia. Most Georgians i met spoke Russian which helped me since i didn't know any Georgian but do know some Russian. Signs are usually in Georgian with English or transliterated into English for the names of places. English isn't widely spoken but some people do speak it so it isn't impossible to find some English speakers. My overall impression is that Georgia is a 2nd world country trying to move up to world 1.5 which they may make in the next decade or two presuming a war with Russia doesn't develop in the near future. Very long flight from the USA add about 6 to 8 hours from Europe to your total flight time. Definitely not a flight i would want to make often. I decided not to invest there due to my experience while there. Maybe getting food poisoning for 9 of my 24 days tainted my attitude some? ;-)

It's fantastic. I'm here at the moment, (Oct-Nov 2022) from Australia. You can't expect it to be like your place of home, as Georgia is slowly upgrading at a rapid rate. It has so my character and history about the place. I'm hoping to eventually move my family over, as I'm looking for freedom for the kids to explore themselves and show them that Australia is not what it's made out to be. Especially when they can lock you up and take away your freedom whenever they want.

Hello! In Georgia, the younger generation typically speaks English really well. Among the older generation, you're more likely to encounter people who speak Russian rather than English. You should generally have no problem with communication in English, especially if you're interacting with younger Georgians.
