Honestly one of the more unique boss designs that took me by surprise when I encountered it. I was not expecting a huge ass sunflower as a boss but man did I love it.
Agreed, I find this boss a bit underrated! Challenging fight that doesn't feel overwhelming imo, unique design as well as great music, I personally really enjoy this fight too ^^. Absolutely love the visual of it doing the pose of the Scadutree in the 3rd phase when doing it's AOE :D
By far, my favourite boss from the DLC. It's not a very complicated fight, but the atmosphere, the mysteries of the Scadutree itself, and the pure sadness coming from this poor sunflower. It may be abandoned, it still has the power of Gold itself, and it's nice that an item from the beginning, the tarnished golden sunflower, has an echo in a boss. The fight is usually so messy and chaotic, and most people just want it to die quickly because it's a battle of attrition, but you did the Scadutree Avatar justice. Good job buddy!
Aside from Messmer, this fight honestly stuck with me the most out of all the bosses in the dlc. Sure its not the coolest or the most mechanically satisfying boss, but it certainly fills those niches decently well while also managing to be an extremely good piece of wordless storytelling. A lone, wilting sunflower clinging to life in the realm of shadow, devoid of light, only for it to finally reveal that the light was within the sunflower the entire time, in its dying moments, accompanied by an incredibly somber and beautiful soundtrack. I feel like theres so many ways to interpret this boss, which is helped by the fact that there isn't really any lore on this thing, leaving the door wide open for interpretations and speculations. I really hope they tap into stuff like this more for their future games.
I don't know why but this boss makes me sad, for some reason. His OST, his design, the ambience, it's like a sunflower warrior abandoned by his master.
I felt similar, sunflowers are expected to stand tall and be full of color, meanwhile this one is brittle and corrupted and the music in phase 3 reflects that with a really sad and haunting tone. It also makes you feel bad seeing it use up all the golden light inside itself like a last self destruct to stop you
Oh for sure. There’s something deeply pitiful and desperate about it. The way it slumps over after its holy burst attack is just heartbreaking. Of all the tragic bosses and enemies in ER, the Sunflower might be one of the most poignant.
There is a reason, but to explain it, the Erdtree needs to first be explained. These great trees found both in the land of shadow and lands between are a sort of representation of all the people in the land they hold dominion over. The Erdtree represents the hope for a brighter future, apparent stagnation, and selective embrace. Bright and radiant on the surface level, but incredibly flawed and broken on the inside. Meanwhile, the Scadutree (shadow tree) represents the loss of purpose, an everlasting, sickening decay, and hopeless abandonment. A tree withering away under the strain of constant death and suffering flooding the shadowlands. While the Erdtree appears healthy, strong, and brilliant; its shadow, the Scadutree is sickly, brittle, and hopeless. The tree we see in the lands of shadow, is quite literally a husk of its former self, much like the rest of residents in the land of shadow. However, this sickness that we can grasp from the Scadutrees appearance is not the only aspect of the avatar that explains the horribly sad cords in the final fight. No, to explain that I am going to speculate. It is my belief that Miquella, on her quest of self purification approached the withering Scadutree and offered it a deal. In exchange for using the trees power to shatter the rune entrusted to him and protect the remenats, he would ascend to god-hood and grant the Scadutree an age of peace for it to prosper in, a world without death or sickness, a better world. In a way, miquella’s offer to shatter the rune was the scadutrees last, desperate hope to survive, so it would grant his request, and harbor the rune at the base of the Scadutree under the protection of an avatar. When we fight the avatar at the base of the Scadutree, it is not just fighting to defend the tree like most Erdtree avatars. no, it is fighting to survive, to protect the rune for miquella, to see a better future. That is why it fights so hard, because this is its last chance. The chance to see the age of peace. However, this hope that the avatar holds was ultimately for nothing as our character ends miquella eventually, thus sealing the fate of the tree, to forever wither and wilt, until it is nothing more than an ashen remembrance of what could have been but was never to be. An unfortunate end, for and unfortunate tree.
Sunflowers face the sun I think (I'll have to look it up) having it be this dark and dead would make me assume that this sunflower couldn't find the light anymore and started facing the shadow. At least that's my interpretation.
@@VelokethIt’s like putting down a scared animal that only wants to be left alone. The way it just crumples and folds over after it uses the golden light AOE, losing all its petals in the desperation phase.. The scadutree itself has already died, and the avatar only survived by clinging to the broken fragments of Miquella’s great rune, a God that will not save it. The avatar isn’t evil. It’s just a lost, scared creature that doesn’t want to die.

Very strange boss. On the one hand, he infuriates me, but on the other, his attacks look interesting and the battle has an atmosphere, it somewhat reminds me of Bloodborne
the attack with the vines on the ground can be super annoying. meanwhile the explosions in phase 3 are some of my favorite attacks ever. Overall really fun moveset imo. And yes, huge Bloodborne lumenflower vibes
For some reason I found this fight super annoying. Not because I was under leveled, my Scadutree lvl was 17. Something about the black thorn casting blocking my vision. To be frank, I did have a spirit ash summon on the field, so maybe that was making the fight harder somehow.
I get it, I didn’t really enjoy the fight the first time and was kinda disappointed to see that it’s a remembrance boss, plus the thorn attacks really annoyed me. I appreciated it way more on refights tho and like it quite a bit now. They went for sth really different here No idea how it is with ashes but it can surely lead to some weird aggro switches

Scadutree’s been one of my favorite bosses from the dlc, at least from someone who watches play throughs. I just have a thing for plant-like bosses
I just notice that the scadutree avatar is growing 2 more hands when it’s doing it’s explosion attack, meaning that it’s still growing
