  • In this Science (Physics) video in Hindi for Class 9 we discussed on the potential energy of a body. We also derived the expression for the gravitational potential energy. This is a topic from Chapter 11 - 'Work and Energy' for class 9th from NCERT.
    Potential energy is the energy possessed by a body due to its position / height.
    Gravitational potential energy of a body of mass m situated h height from the ground is said to be mgh [here gravitational potential energy of that body at ground is considered to be zero]
    When we pull the string of a bow, we do not observe any kinetic energy. But when we release the string, the arrow gets kinetic energy. But what happens to the work we do, when we pull the string. The energy is stored in the bow and this energy is known as the potential energy (more precisely, elastic potential energy).
    In the above situations, the energy gets stored due to the work done on the object. The energy transferred to an object is stored as potential energy if it is not used to cause a change in the velocity or speed of the object. You transfer energy when you stretch a rubber band. The energy transferred to the band is its potential energy. You do work while winding the key of a toy car. The energy transferred to the spring inside is stored as potential energy. The potential energy possessed by the object is the energy present in it by virtue of its position or configuration.
    Similarly, when we lift a body to a height, we do not observe any kinetic energy. But when we release the body, it gets kinetic energy. When we lift the body, the energy is stored as potential energy (more precisely, gravitational potential energy).
    An object increases its energy when raised through a height. This is because work is done on it against gravity while it is being raised. The energy present in such an object is the gravitational potential energy. The gravitational potential energy of an object at a point above the ground is defined as the work done in raising it from the ground to that point against gravity.
    Consider an object of mass, m. Let it be raised through a height, h from the ground. A force is required to do this. The minimum force required to raise the object is equal to the weight of the object, mg. The object gains energy equal to the work done on it. Let the work done on the object against gravity be W. That is,
    work done, W = force × displacement
    or, W = mg × h
    or, W = mgh
    Since work done on the object is equal to mgh, an energy equal to mgh units is gained by the object. This is the potential energy (EP) of the object.
    So, Ep = mgh
    It is important to note that the work done by gravity depends on the difference in vertical heights of the initial and final positions of the object and not on the path along which the object is moved.

    Energy is Just a number we assign to a system, which can be transferred. When we lift a ball the potential energy increases but in reality the distance between the earth and ball increases and therefore when we leave the ball, ball travels for longer time and gains higher velocity and we say that the potential energy got transferred in kinetic energy but as energy is just a number we assign then we can work without the concept of energy but then it will be difficult to deal certain situations which the concept of energy simplifies.
    Is my reasoning correct sir?

    E(P) = mgh
    hum force object ke weight me laga te hain aur opposite direction of weight.
    To hum formula mein E(P) = (-mg)h bhi toh le sakte hain.
    leking hum lete nahi hai.

    lot of difference in 8th and 9th... some basics of 9th should be in 8th so that a student can learn the terms in 8th and use them in 9th without this much confusion.

      But this jump (8th to 9th) is nothing in comparison to the jump from 10th to 11th.

    Sir ,, when work is done some energy is consumed then in the case of bow and arrow :when the string is stretched with the arrow work is done and some energy is consumed and this energy is known as potential energy and the arrow flying off the bow that potential energy converted into kinetic energy. SIR, can I explained it correctly??

    Sir ! In case of bow. Kinetic energy increases. but we know that when kinetic energy increases than potential energy must be decreases. But in case of bow, the arrow is at same height. Than how we can say that here potential energy is decreased???

    Please give the answer if we take a ball to h height from surface of the earth the potential energy will be mgh now if the ball falls downward gravitational force work on the ball now if gravity does work on ball and work is positive then ball 's mechanical energy will be more than mgh but still it's conservative to mgh why

    If we apply some extra force along with "mg" to lift the body to a height of "h"(i.e. mg+F) then....some extra work will be done to lift the body. As we know the work we had done on the body is stored in form of potential energy....then...here body present in same height from the surface will possess different potential energy.....how is this possible?? Plz...tell me what is right?

    Sir, i have confusion on law of conservation of energy. I have taught that one form of energy can be transferred to another kind. You have told in your vedio that when a ball hits ground its mechanical energy converts into sound, vibrational energy. After that what happes to that energy ? How is it transfered to another form of energy.?

    when we strech the string of arrow, There is force and displacement in the direction of the force...So W=f*s ....But How is work done by the string when there is no energy in that...?For a object to do work ,Energy must be in it..
