But Facebook has that data through the choice of those using it, who have signed up. CA got the data through the back door, without users' knowledge and under the falsity that the purpose behind the data harvesting was academic rather than corporate or political. Different ball game.

Chris Wylie and Edward Snowden are the young heroes we need. We must protect them from being hounded by these Mega Cyberbullies. The UN has adopted the convention against corruption in 2003 and the Council of Europe has ratified the civil law convention on corruption at the turn of the millennium, both vouching for whistleblower protection in their articles. Yet these heroes' lives and career are in danger. How rudderless and spineless have our international bodies become? SMH!

A major problem that these companies bury the privacy settings so that you can't find them. Its almost impossible to fully delete a facebook profile after you've made one. They ask for your email and phone number then keep sending you unwanted messages if you haven't logged in to their site for a few days. Facebook and Instagram also re-order your messages. So you'll be waiting for a reply from a friend, and they do reply, but its hidden to make you stay anticipating it and watching their adverts in the meanwhile.

I like how the Brits just haul their scoundrels into Committee and get right down to brass tacks. In the states we have Trump and his Republican enablers who would never want to offend the rich business class. Mark Z's entire testimony could be "Yeah, I sold your data and we all know you're not going to do a damn thing about it.." and that would be the end of it.

The way to control companies like Facebook is to enact legislation that is specific to Facebook and similar entities because the CEO's of these entities deny that they are publishers or media outlets etc. The laws must make such entities liable to financial penalty to users where information about users is used without the specific permission of the users. Where information which has passed through the entity about users, indicates that the users are involved in illegal activity then the entities themselves must make all information about these users available to the police in the country where the user is residing and in the country where the illegal activity occurred. The fact that entities like Facebook are not UK entities at the top levels cannot be used as a legal escape route if they have users in the UK.

Why isn't anyone delving deeper into whether or not the permissions which Facebook claims weren't granted to GSR are or are not consistent with the company's own systemic improprieties with users' personal information exposed in the past? Seems to me either they were in on the "breach" in so far as they likely profited heavily from it and/or they were gamed by an outside entity who exploited the very framework of Facebook which allows for such massive privacy dumps to occur. I'll say it again: Blame the drinker, not the drink. Get off Facebook already!

It is actually irritating to see that the questions asked are not worded in a way that requires a conclusive answer. They are allowing these people the opportunity to respond with the absence of certainty, which is a classic trick used solely to redirect culpability.
Thus leaves the problem that we are left with this domino effect full of: "to the best of my knowledge", "possible", "what if" which will continue to rotate while blame is shifted from one entity to the next.
It is simply not good enough for any entity to respond by insinuating that their actions were based on 'good faith'. That alone highlights sheer negligence on their part for failure to ensure - whether wilfully or otherwise - accountability along with legal and social responsibility.
Our judicial system is, arguably, the fairest in the world... But there are times when I wish it would stop being so damn lenient and actually hold those accountable to the fullest extent where it is blatantly clear they are responsible; directly or indirectly, wilfully or otherwise.

It is not just the data, it is the psychological profile along with that data, plus that of all their friends. Its the psychological data that allows them to be manipulated to vote for anyone CA was paid by. They learned how to scare and play with easily targetable people. It is not that they just convinced them to vote, it is that they studied and experimented with them, actively to see how to best manipulate their actions online, without these people ever knowing it. That is not marketing. It is what used to ominously be called mind-control during the cold war. Now these psychological profiles + data are in the hands of the Russians. This academic not only works for Cambridge, but is also an employee of Saint Petersburg University and receives funding from the Russian government. How can free democracies hope to function in this setup? All these horrible people have to do is shrug and say everybody it doing it, democracy is a flawed system...

It is impossible to "manipulate" someone into voting for a candidate. The company simply used the data to provide users with exposure to ads. It's like saying that you were manipulated into jerking off because you saw banner ads for pornhub.

Perhaps so, but I'm not sure how this affects the average user whose personal information is already being shared and stored by a billion other services and administrative servers. Meanwhile; in a different caliber of values and principles unbeknownst to the press, some facebook members are exploiting the social network's rules system in some new form of social political communications warring against other members inside specific international politics groups to do with sovereignty or political confrontation matters of world interest. Situations that had been combating and brewing for a long time before the existence of facebook between nationals of different countries, potentially affiliated to governments or military departments. By very simply manipulating facebook language and vocabulary ethics rules in their "reporting system" , searching for past made comments containing vocabulary which though once went unnoticed, today are being dug up even years later, regardless if they were made to other people during irrelevant conversations to them, in order to report their targeted members in the heat of arguments where they may be gaining on important points being witnessed by other group members, so as to get them suspended and silenced in continuation for two, three, four or five terms back to back, meaning; there are people who have figured out a loophole in the system, that has become a way of silencing people's rightful participation on facebook, taking out members of their choice when they don't want their ideas or knowledge to be proliferated, or their denouncements to be publicly exposed. They wait for their suspensions to be over, and as soon as their victims return to the groups they find something to report them on again! These savvy manipulators of facebook ethical reporting rules systems, do not care what kind of damage they cause their victims outside their interest groups, and since facebook does not let your friends know when you are under suspension, it causes all sorts of disarray and confusion among those who expect to find you on line, whatever activity you were involved in with each other. This is a serious violation of our Constitutional Right to free speech of which people are being usurped of, and facebook has no reception for anyone complaining about this problem, leading some to believe facebook itself uses this loophole and form of manipulation of members access to the network, in order to themselves quietly keep people from participating for different agendas that are not what their supposed ethical criterias are supposed to be about. This is one of the not talked about sufferings many facebook members are undergoing right now, it is traumatic and feels like being wrongfully accused of something you did not commit. People are getting blocked, kicked out or suspended without explanation, no body finds out about it and years worth of writings, picture journals, stories, social activism groups and causes, friendship relationships, family communication bridges they honned for years are just getting chucked out the window.

This is, ultimately, the future, no? Unless trust becomes an actual selling point for a website in regards to them not only just protecting your data but trust in that they wont share it. And unless it gets to a point where corporations will actually start suffering user drop off from this or similar scandals based solely on the fact that they share data with other companies, politicians, etc, then expect this to be common practice. South Park made fun of this to an extent. Eventually you may need to consult an attorney to use a website or company's service. This is also a symptom of humanity ultimately just coming together under one umbrella. The internet being that umbrella, and at the same time it being a wealth of information. Data/information has always been a commodity, whose making the Bomb, where are the German troop positions, where are the allies going to land on d-day, whats the Soviet Union doing in Vietnam, etc. Except now everyday happenings hold as much weight if not more so.
This company is not only selling "elections" It's realistically telling the future. And then telling you or someone running for office how to change up in order to win. To say any of us would do otherwise is biased and unfair. I would do that in a heartbeat.

You expect someone who got caught lying to turn around and tell the truth? lol Maybe an honest person in an honest situation but not anyone with that type of money doing those type of things.

That is why when turncoats come forward they are asked to provide documentary evidence ostensibly to back themselves up but in actual fact it is to make their testimony redundant. If they cannot provide the documents they are told to go sit on a cactus and spin, and if they do provide the documents they are told to just go away as they are no longer needed. The newspapers are only letting this guy talk because it gets them ratings.
