its interesting that there arent any classes for reaper usage, there is Ableton, Fruity Loops, Garageband and Logic. No Acid, Bitwig, Cubase, Reaper, Reason, Samplitude or Tracktion... I think I should put something up there for the desktop publishing scene to represent for Gen X.

if this guy and kenny got in the same room together the weight of combined reaper knowledge would rip a hole in the spacetime continuum

The two settings I'd add that I think every user should really look to incorporate are:
    1. Editing Behavior -> MIDI Editor -> A) "One MIDI Editor: Per Project", B) "open all MIDI on Same Track." I was surprised not to see that on the list. The per item default is insane IMO.
    2. Mouse Modifiers -> Arrange View -> Middle Drag - set this to Hand Scroll. Use Shift to Jog Audio. Way faster to navigate projects with middle drag and not having to worry about a modifier.
I'd also suggest people think long and hard about:
    3. Project -> Track/Send Defaults -> Record Config -> "Preserve PDC on Recorded Items." Super important! If you want what you heard out of your speakers while you were recording to be what's played back, then enable this. If you want what you physically played (without the PDC), to be what's played back, keep this off. The former is what your ears heard, the latter/default is what your fingers did. Some people will prefer one over the other, but I feel like that's an important one for every user to know.

    • @woofiewill
      @woofiewill Год назад +2

      First two points are great!
I had a hard time understanding #3 though and found a forum post on the forum about it. Supposedly without it enabled, the delay from processing and monitoring round-trip will cause your recordings to always seem slightly off-time. The setting applies compensation for these effects in your recording. But it might be such a small amount that it doesn't cause problems for most people. Seems like a good setting!

As I work in MIDI 90% of the time these days - finally being able to default my track input is such a timesaver for me. Thank you so much for this. Oh - and everyone - Don't forget to back up your APP DATA folder!!!

Spent the last three hours going through this with Reaper open too, this was aa great help, and it's made me a lot more confident in giving the system a try now, having seen so much of the 'under-the-hood' whilst setting up! Look forward to putting it through it's paces over the weekend! Thanks again :)

Thanks a lot for this video. Regarding peaks, I just click that option in the project settings that creates a peaks folder inside the "audio files" folder that you create under each project (in my case, I just name it "audio" like Kenny Gioia). That automatically organizes the peaks by project, just like the audio files, and prevents Reaper from re-creating those peaks everytime in new folders in case you transfer the project from its original place. Also, it's so relieving to set editing behavior to "beats position only" by default... stretching things is seldom something I'd use (unless you want to use that old technique of recording slower to playback faster haha). The midi/item loop behavior is also something so annoying, it's better to just turn it off like you did. And I always wanted to know how to show cpu/ram use in a small fashion, without the pop up window, and it's so simple! hah! Such a thorough video as always, thank you for this. I'll be revisiting all my preferences!

My favorite Reaper tech is to just get rid of every single keyboard shortcut and just use my own. It's a bit cumbersome to have to reinstate things like Ctrl+C or Ctrl+X, but it's beyond frustrating when you want to add a new shortcut but almost every single combination is already taken. I find it just more convenient to clean that up instead of trying to be mindful of what I replace and what I don't.

@24:30 Was waiting to see the "Force project tempo/time signature changes to occur on whole samples" parameter.
This is the reason I stopped using Reaper for production and went back to Ableton.
When enabled I get a .999 or .002 tempo decimal, which for long audio files, it starts with the file being on the grid and then slowly drifts off the grid.
When disabled and using hardware MIDI instruments, when Reaper loops at the time selection, all MIDI sync goes off.
Also would be nice to investigate MIDI Devices as offsetting the MIDI clock there to anything larger than approx 50ms, does not actually implement the offset, regardless of larger values.
    Great videos, thanks.

Reaper is infinitely customisable but the sheer range of options is terrifying. I'm sure most people just go with the vanilla interface which, sadly, is not the most intuitive among DAWs and has put a lot of people off using it.

Fantastic video! There is no way to use the horizontal mousewheel to scroll left/right in the MCP, right? Most DAWs, if you hover over the mixer and scroll left/right, the mixer will scroll, as opposed to the arrange window. Reaper appears to not have any preferences or mouse modifiers to enable this behavior.
