A trick I herd before is to get the aluminum yardstick from Harbor freight. A little alcohol or acyatone will take off the printing. Then you can mark it up for your feet spacing or whatever.

Working in a small workshop is a special way to Zen. Beeing focused to your work is a good way got calm down. I like the art of love you put into you objects. Not only the result is important, the way of creating with a little love to the material makes a good result.

As long as you're there ...we're here . It's great to have this technology these days , because although you're all by yourself in that luthier cabin , we as individuals appreciate the communication. It is'nt as if you're only just talking into a camera eye . Yes, the long metal ruler is a great help , I cannot build a cbg without one .

I also use a metal yardstick . After watching this, I went to check it. It was not a Great Neck. But I wasn’t disappointed. Seems that I have a 36” Johnson.

That’s great! I’m tempted to try a scarf joint soon. I’m only on #3 and have #4’s head stock cut out already. Thanks for the inspiration Del!😁😎

I had to laugh 😂. I came in from the garage where I was making a neck! I’m building a ukulele out of a popsicle box! I was getting all efficient by pre-drilling all the necessary holes when I realized I put the tuner screw holes on the wrong side of the neck! D’oh!!! It’s 102F outside so I’ll blame the SNAFU on the heat. Oh well, that just gives me an excuse to practice putting veneer on the headstock to cover the errant holes.

Hi Del .Thanks for all your great videos, you are so inspirational. I am starting my first box for a CBG and gathering all the parts required. Can you please assist me, I'm confused with the string tuning winders regarding a set of 3Left&3Right or set of 6R what side of the neck they are used. All the best from Oz.

coolio...I have also cut up a steel retractable tape measure to create several different lengths of super acurate and lightweight rulers, we don't get Doug Fir over here but I did find a real nice hardwood stave stuck in the ground by the side of the road that some fool had attached a "danger" sign to, not sure what wood it is but has a sweet tight grain and is thick enough to carve a one piecer from, long enough to make a bass CBG if there is such a thing.

Hey Del.. just wondering.. when you cut the neck to build up the back angle you want different thickness of the neck at the bridge and at the neck of the cbg.. the neck will be levelled on the inside of tge cbg under the lid of the cbg.. but at the bottom of the cbg? in the neck position the neck fully contact the wood of the shim you put inside the cbg... but.. at the end of the cbg the bottom of the neck will be in contact with the wodden shim you put underr it inside of the cbg at an angle... so it won't be in full contact with the wodden shim/spacer... am i right? it will be against the spacer at the front but a little off in the back.. letting sone air and not in full contact with the spacer.. right?

Do I put varnish in between the frets on the neck or just leave it stained?

Thanks for your video's. I hope you accept tips from your fans.
To make your Neck even Greater, try using about 3-4 applications of Kiwi brown shoe polish on your fret board. Use a lot of vigorous buffing as that will fill in all those small and micro cracks or grooves, whatever you call them making the fret board smoother. Don't use cheap polish, it doesn't work. You can also use different color polish depending on the result you want.
I was taught that technique by a master luthier when I was a apprentice and we used it on high end guitar necks.
I hope you will try it and let me know what you think. Thanks, God Bless, and keep up the good work.

Nice neck !! Del, have you ever used tung oil for a finish ? I've got a can and I was wondering if it would work on the boxes and necks. Can you let me know? Thanks del.

I find this particular video very interesting.. I really can relate to what you say about being able to sit and sand and shape and nit-pick on every detail a building the guitars you make. So far I've built two cigar box guitars. I got great personal satisfaction by spending the time in building the guitar myself.I certainly could have bought one or two or even three if I wanted. This particular video caught my eye because it talked about a great neck. But through all the time I spent and effort neither one of the great necks that I made we're not worth even worth two cents. The reason I say that is because both of them sound like crap. And so far the main reason that I can see for that being the case is because my fretboard isn't right. Before I started my builds I searched and searched for a template for a fretboard.. I saw a video by someone else that had built a guitar that sounded great. They even offered a download of a printable template that they said they used in their build. For some reason it didn't work that well for me. A great neck or any other part of the guitar seems to be useless without a great fretboard.
