  • Rae Lakes Loop, Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park, Bears, Camping & backpacking Paradise Valley, Mist Falls, JMT 4k, the Crown of the Sierra Nevada. Let me know if this video is still relevant in 2024?
This is a 5 day backpacking trip in Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park, doing the Rae Lakes loop with my new buddies Chuck The Mauler and Matt. Often considered one of the most beautiful hiking trail loops in the United States. We did this loop from Onion Valley going over Kersarge Pass and continuing counter clockwise. Our Camps where at Gilbert Lake, Charlotte Lake, Arrowhead Lake, then we split up and I camp one night a few miles below Junction Meadow to exit at Kersarge Pass the next day. Lots of wildlife, bears, dear, snakes and amazing views from one of the most stunning places in the Sierra. Paradise Valley, Mist Falls, Bubbs Creek, Glen Pass, Woods Creek, Arrow Creek. JMT (John Muir Trail) PCT (Pacific Crest Trail). I filmed this on my iPhone 11 Pro Max in 4k60fps.

This is another level of soothing, out of all the videos I've seen on mountains, streams, lakes, and trails, this one is indescribable on how it makes me feel. One minute in and I forgot all my worries and stresses completely.
    Amazing video.

Thanks for the memories.. I did the loop back in 1979 as an 11 year old with my family.. Thinking about it still provides some of my favorite memories. Your relaxed style is refreshing in today's fast paced hiking community..

Thank you so much for this video! I was on the CCC Backcountry Trails crew there in 1982 and have not seen it since until now! Btw, you need a starter pistol to scare bears away. They hate loud, startling noises. Bubbs Creek probably has a bridge now because it was a raging torrent the year that the NPS foreman made us cross it on a slippery log and I slipped and almost fell in. I definitely would have not survived. Oh, the stories I have of that summer in Kings Canyon! A bear ripped into our tent and almost took out my left eye (I screamed and it was GONE), a footlong millipede crossed my sleeping bag when I slept under the stars, we had to take a helicopter to get up to Paradise Valley there was so much snow! I remember the Sphinx, Mount Clarence King, Mount Wynn, and we climbed Mount Pinchot and Arrow peak. We hiked 19 miles out and saw a bear running 35 mph! We saw Bighorn (or maybe Dahl) sheep. We didn’t have smart phones back then, but I took loads of pictures with my little Olympus backpacking camera with a self-timer. I took a pic of myself standing in a field of Columbines in Paradise Valley on my birthday.

Awesome, thanks for the memories, must have been great time, I will pass on the millipede though😳

I've been in tears since a quarter way in. Since I was 10 I knew I had to find the top of the mountain. I don't even remember my first hike. I only remember the wind. It felt likei could be a seed just dancing in the wind.
After a little over 10 years in the fire service, I became ill. After four years out I was diagnosed with Lupus. I had suffered in my profession for years before.....
I've don Alta, Lakes Trail, Sawtooth, Mt Whitney and more.
Your video brought me to tears because I miss them so much.
While I've hiked with people, I have done solo more than not.
After I got sick I took up photography. It slowed me down enough that I could hike. I began really seeing the beauty I was surrounded by. I never wanted to slow another person down whether it was my disease or my love of light in the forest or on barren rock.
Thank you for lighting that torch for me again. I'm determined to get out there.
The Sequoia Park, wherever you are in it, is a slice of heaven.
We're being ravaged by fire right now. Oddly enough, I've been hiking in these parts for 20 years. I have always taken pictures. Without knowing it, I now realize I've chronicled the look of this beautiful place. It's so much different now than 15, 20 years ago. It breaks my heart.

Having backpacked since the late 1960s (1-4 weeks a year and mostly with a friend I have known since childhood), it just suits my style. Many, but not all, of these current backpacking videos are about mileage, obstacles overcome, and personal ego and overlook the majestic nature that they are marching through.

I spend a lot of time staring in awe and soaking it all in.. being mesmerized by our planets beauty and wonders, and your style of video makes it easier for me to do that. I took my son on the zumwalt meadows to roaring river falls trail. We saw a bear and on the way back noticed that a recently burned area might be starting up again! We have already talked to 911. They are sending the forestry service. But a big sequoia was down and charred and billowing smoke. We didn't notice it on the way to the falls so we do think it was growing. We dumped our water bottles on it and filled them in the river and dumped them again but the sun was going down and we did see the bear... we had to get out. No joke. It was scary but no fire, no embers... lots of smoke though. Im glad we went. We maybe stopped a forest fire. Im definitely getting bear spray. We did just like you when we saw it. We were thankfully much farther away. 60 feet or so.
On the plus side, we think we can do longer hikes without too much strain. And we will try. Thank you for everything you do. You and your videos are an inspiration. Really.

This was awesome! I can't wait to hike the JMT in a few more weeks. I am using my iPhone 11 pro max also. If you don't mind my asking, what app are you editing with? And when you save video, do you save in 4K/60 also? I use KineMaster and am having issues with saving the video to my phone in 4K/60 - it keeps telling me error saving video (file too large maybe?). But if I decrease to 1080 it works but that messes up the image quality. It's frustrating. Your videos look wonderful! Great job!

@@NorwegianXplorer thank you! I started with iMovie with my old iPhone 7 then upgraded to KineMaster to have more options with editing. Maybe I should try iMovie again and see how that works. I'll keep experimenting. Thanks so much. :)

5:49 how did Chuck take care of the bears? I’m learning and building up courage to backpack this area and not be terrified of bears.

There is one thing you can learn from what happened with that bear that Jarl help scare off. Notice how the bear kept sticking its tongue out (another is a very audible popping of the jaw) then it would bluff charge. These actions show that the bear is stressed and the more stressed they get the more unstable they become. Black bears generally will run grizzly is another thing altogether. Jarl said no bear spray allowed here so you can use an air horn to drive them away if you get in a tight situation. How to handle bears would make for a whole book. There is know simple statement that answers that question. Start with park protocols on how to handle food so your not inviting bears into your camp to start with.

Another beautiful video Jarl! Those lenticular clouds at Glenn Pass were awesome, as was the lunch spot at Rae Lakes. I'm curious - are you zooming in with your phone (specifically that waterfall), or are you zooming in when you process the video? I'm pretty impressed with the video quality of the iPhone 11 Pro Max. I'm seriously considering leaving my GoPro at home on my next trip. I'm still impressed with the tenacity of that bear. Hopefully, others won't have the same experience!

Thank you Maryann! For the very close up shots, Forester Pass and the bear, I zoom past the max zoom of the zoom lense on the iPhone, The zoom lense is 2X, but you can zoom it digitally to 6x, so the resolution suffers a little bit. Its also got a wide angle lense, so 3 lenses that work pretty well together. The bear is something for sure lol, I have reported it to Seki just to be on the safe side.

@@NorwegianXplorer - Thanks! I have the 11 Pro Max as well, and I have a couple of lenses made by Moment. They help extend the reach of the telephoto on the camera. You might want to check it out. Anyway - great video!

      @MaryannHazel 3 года назад +1

@@NorwegianXplorer - You can get them on Amazon, or buy direct from www.shopmoment.com/lenses. I really like the macro and telephoto, although the wide-angle is really nice. The anamorphic lens is REALLY nice for video. (yes...I have them all. LOL!)
