On the Road: Debt collector focuses more on the carrot and less on the stick

  • As part of our continuing series, "On the Road," Steve Hartman met one man who is changing the face of debt-collection. Bill Bartmann and his company CFS-2 believe that the best way to collect on someone's debt is to help them start earning again. The company provides a gamut of free services including resume help or free housing -- and they're trouncing their competition in the process.

Bill Bartman passed away on 11/29/16. I hope CFS II is still operating as the company he started.

I was harassed for two months. Every day multiple times a day by debt collectors trying to contact my neighbor who owed them money. I live in Unit A and he lives in Unit B. It was awful.

If you think happiness is about money. You are wrong and this is just one example. His focus was helping others. And his business is booming.

This is the sort of thinking I have tried all my life in my employ. I did not get a nobel prize I got fired time and time again. I did get a international ring of thieves off the streets before 9/11. I am on disability but know what I could make a difference if companies had a heart. This is nothing new this what community use to be like people watched out for eachother. We had extra fish the old lady down the street had enough.

A lot of people dont know this. When a company has a lot of people in debt and they won't pay, they sell a list to another company for pennies on the dollar of what the debt is. Ex:Jane is in debt for $10000 l, then they sell the debt for $1000 to a company, if they can even get $2000 from her they make money. This is done in the thousands of names. If these companies can get even a third of the people on the list to pay, they profit.

I was nearly fired from a C store job when I tried to talk a smoker into quitting smoking, the manager shit she said we make most of our money selling tobacco. I said start selling something else tobacco is a terrible product. That was in early 1990s Tell you how long ago it was Vanilla Ice was just starting out.

Where were you when I was double clocking my life working 80 hours a week? I did enough work when I did work to retire 2 of you. I get a company that will allow me to operate from a recliner then sure I can work? See your malfunction is that I have to be under contract to be worth anything I am here online helping people all the time just the other day I saved a guy from selling his car for $500. I came up with a solution that allowed him to fix it go on vacation and just for a phone call.

Yeah because God forbid we should be self sufficient and do things for ourself.....like write our own resumes ...just go in debt, call this company, and they will practically do everything for you. You get to do nothing and be lazy.

They do have to show up for the interview, get the job, do the job and pay back the debt. They just straighten people out who got into a mess, so they're capable of becoming productive members of society again, and the company gets their money, the people that hired the company get their money, so everyone wins. They don't forgive your debts or anything. And you don't know if your debt will land with this company or somebody else.
