- Yusuf Islam (born Steven Demetre Georgiou; 21 July 1948), commonly known by his stage name Cat Stevens, and later Yusuf, is a British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. His musical style consists of folk, pop, rock, and, in his later career, Islamic music. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
His 1967 debut album reached the top 10 in the UK, and its title song "Matthew and Son" reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. Stevens' albums Tea for the Tillerman (1970) and Teaser and the Firecat (1971) were certified triple platinum in the US by the RIAA. His 1972 album Catch Bull at Four spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard 200, and fifteen weeks at number one in the Australian ARIA Charts. He earned two ASCAP songwriting awards in 2005 and 2006 for "The First Cut Is the Deepest", and the song has been a hit for four artists. His other hit songs include "Father and Son", "Wild World", "Moonshadow", "Peace Train", and "Morning Has Broken". In 2007, he received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.
no one misses those long microphone cables
Cat Stevens deserves far more recognition as a song-writer and performer than he ever received. He is a genius.
I absolutely love this song.
I`m playing it every day..im obsessed with it,
He was so gorgeous. ❤
The audience look spectacularly uninterested 🤣 and as for the dancers, well...
Great song. Beautiful Cat Stevens/Yusuf.🐈🐾🐾🎼🎵🎶🎙🎤❤❤
It;s the traditional response to a bloke in the audience getting up and trying to steal the show, isn't it...
Yes, they were distracted by his walking around maybe? Makes their dance efforts look half-hearted.
@@SusanLynn656 Difficult to imagine now but there was a time when Yusuf Cat Stevens was not so well known, maybe a bit niche even. Also in those times cool meant not losing it at all, a show of enthusiasm was unhip (like using words such as 'ccol' and 'unhip' is now...)
19 year old Cat was hot! ... He's a hot Cat!
Cat sporting a different look than what most of us saw who grew up with him in the 70s.
WHAT A GREAT VOICE.
He was "ruff". LOL.
Why can't anyone write songs as brilliant as this anymore!
It's sad that you're online and still can't figure out how to find good music.
@@juliebraden6911 musicians, havent got the emotional depth to write songs that mean something.
because there are no good song writers anymore.
I did not know Cat Stevens began his singing career this early. First time I heard this song.
Nice!
I've heard the song but never saw him performing it. It surprised me to see him like this, so different! He's only 19 here! He's as different in his beginnings as Willie Nelson was.
Me to I don’t realise he was known from the 60s
born in May 1967, I came out of my mother's womb already knowing this song. The comfort of the beat continues to comfort me 55 years later.
no need of hearing aid you done it
The beat is partly to do with the sound of a burns bass guitar i believe🤓
Me too 👍😎
I met god our Lord in 1967, and cat was this cool,, playing beautiful vibes... i am truly blessed ZThe year of Aquarius....😊
Implausible lyrics. You would have to get up earlier for the train.
I remember hearing this song on the radio as a lil girl , I grew up in the 90s but my mum used to play gold radio which played all the goldie oldies , hearing this has put a smile on my face and brought back memories ❤
It's been so long since I heard this song, I did not know it was done by Cat Stevens.
Who'd have thought the next year he would have his beard...mustache and writing some of the most loved songs ever...
Loved?Try true classics that will never be forgoton.
@@1953beetle try forgotten?! 👍🏼😁

He deserves immortality just for penning the line

Wow, whatta line! Sheeitt!!! For real!
I was 4 years old when this came out and I loved it so much my parents bought it for me, it was the first record I ever owned.
It is arranged with effort and cleverness. The music got shallow after that. When rebellion was through .
DECCA DERAM
Fantastic late '60's little boy with great memories - "Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, etc. etc....
Wat a 4 year old
Ditto , 4 years old and first record i asked for.
Classic 60's! Golden era of great music!!
Just glad I was around to enjoy it.
I so love this ... Cat stevens at this age is awesome
I wish British music and culture was still the same today. Must have been a wonderful time to be young.
It was, that's why I want to go back.
It was
I was there. Cat Stevens was great. Then he became Muslim, advocated murder, and destroyed his whole reputation. He should have been arrested decades ago..
@@elizabethmcloughlin1984 Yes, sadly i've read that he also wanted Salmand Rushdie murdered for his book but he doesn't like to talk about this when questioned.
The Beat Club is a German TV show and was filmed in Bremen, West Germany. This was only 20 years after WWII. German youth had a whole different experience
Remember hearing this for the first during the summer of 1967 while playing football in Hillend, Fife.
What a happy crowd they are, NOT. Always loved this song, never saw a clip for it till today.
I was thinking the same, proper music then, imagine what the crowd would think if they heard todays crap music.
No idea they were in the presence of a legend.
@howard bianchi the people in this clip are German teens I think
Ok
1st of all this was common sense of art those days to act shy as sheep and not flipping out. 2nd with all resepect to the singer this is clearly not one of his best songs. Mediocre at best. 3rd no wonder he was so frustrated by time to join a religion also not known for their positive enthuasim. 😉
It's the Lutheran culture, it's the same here in Finland. Very reserved. Beat-Club was filmed in Bremen, northern Germany.
One of my teenage faves. Still know all the words
Cat was a great singer, and a thoroughly nice bloke.
For me his best song
I agree
I remember working for a firm in blackburn called Robinson’s and son, we used to stand outside waiting for it to open in the morning singing this song but changing the name 🤣😂 I was only 16yrs old then, we grew up in the best music era the 60s 🎵🎸❤️🤘🏼😎
Remember going to school 🏫 at the age of 6 singing a cup of cold coffee ☕️ and a peice of cake 🎂 🥮 love this the orchestration pure 60s ❤❤❤wonderful
I always wondet what kind of cake he was singing about
Cat Yusef a totally lovely man ❤

Cat Stevens is brilliant! The audience…. Seemed distracted…..
the audience were zombies
I wish I'd found this to show to my mum before she passed away this year. It was her fave Cat song ❤️
Condolences, good luck to you.

The audience were like a bunch of dead beats. This is classic music history!!!!
I bought this album in 67 about three months after it was released, from Grant’s in Turfland Mall. It was a demo copy as well.
Can't beat the 60's melody though before my time as I was born '72 ..but feel 100% connected
The first song that I learnt all the lyrics to.
Well I was only 3 but this is a wonderful piece of 60's nostalgia.
GREAT DAYS, ID GO BACK IN A HEARTBEAT.
Love this song!! My favorite Cat Steven’s song Still have the 45 from the ‘60s
Mine too 😊
Krásné super písničky mého mládí. Kde jsou ty doby,
I have always loved Cat Steven's music. From The First Cut Is The Deepest. I sat across from him at a restaurant / bar at the Hyatt in L.A. talking with my friend about the merits of Teaser and the Firecat versus Tea for the Tillerman. I glanced at him but did not recognize him. He heard us talking about his music and what a prolific genius and artist he was. He left and the bartender came over and informed us that was Cat Stevens that we had been talking about. I ran out to see if he was still on the floor but he was gone.
OMG, THATS INCREDIBLE.
There was a dress code to get into these TV shows. I was 15 remember it well...great song.
I appreciate your support and love 💕
When I see people like that, the girls look really cool. better than your guys. but was one of them himself. cry
Talented fellow. He could have been a huge star. I'm sure knows that.
He was, and still is, a huge star.
I think the expressions on his face when he is singing this is funny cold cup of coffee and a piece of cake hilarious!
But boy, could he sing.
the crowd are very subdued, great song Cat
This was epic.
When you could understand what singers were saying.
It's my song... literally!
A very young Cat Stevens! He was about twenty here.
When this was playing on the radio I was helping my dad. He was a painter and decorator, one of his favourite songs. He's gone now this remines me of him
A great late 60s song ! Like other 1960s babies on here - I loved this song, even though I wasn't much more than a toddler 🙂 Good singer songwriter 👍
Love Cat, and had no idea he was the inspiration for Austin Powers!
Brilliant performance brilliant song very unique love it
TRUE TALENT.
wow so young !!
Up at 8:00, you can't be late
For Matthew & Son, he won't wait
Watch them run down to platform one
And the 8:30 train to Matthew & Son
Matthew & Son, the work's never done, there's always something new
The files in your head, you take them to bed, you're never ever through
And they've been working all day, all day, all day
There's a five-minute break and that's all you take
For a cup of cold coffee and a piece of cake
Matthew & Son, the work's never done, there's always something new
The files in your head, you take them to bed, you're never ever through
And they've been working all day, all day, all day
He's got people who've been working for 50 years
No one asks for more money 'cause nobody dares
Even though they're pretty low and their rent's in arrears
Matthew & Son, Matthew & Son
Matthew & Son, Matthew & Son
And they've been working all day, all day, all day
Matthew & Son, Matthew & Son
Matthew & Son, Matthew & Son

¡Saludos!.
Cat or stephen wrote some great fast well orchestrated lop that was so infectious and great pop recorded on deram.
Great call eric.

He was just 19 when this song was released
Even younger when he wrote it in 1965
Cat Stevens amazing man.
Wow! I Love Cat Stevens!
Legend!
Brilliant.
Such a Classic.
Absolutely fantastic!! 🎶🎤🥰❤️💖💕
In the 80s I used to wait on Bloemfontein Rd for a work pick up.I used to sing it on the way to the job.oh the irony.
Wow uma reliquia dos anos 60 ❤ Amei recordar, há tempos que não ouvia esta música , dancei tanto ao som desta canção lindíssima . Fez-me viajar no tempo até à minha adolescência. I Love, Cat Stevens , sua fã sempre ! Bons tempos, belas recordações ❤🎤🌹🎼🎸
so clean
Love it, one of the first singles I bought
You have great taste in music, judy.
Brilliant memory. All of his later songs are great but so different to this
My most favorite by Cat!
Dude's got style! And he's kinda 🔥HOT!🔥Bit of an Austin Powers vibe going on? 😂 ... Great how Cat looked like a member of the audience singing along at the start! ... And nice of the girl in the audience to help out with microphone cable management! 😂 ... He must've been all of 19 when he sang this! ... If you do the math, Matthew & Son's longest serving employees started with the company in 1917! ... Just about due for retirement? 😂
Hehehehehe realmente ele tem o estilo de Austin Powers
Lovely!
I appreciate your support and love 💕
1976,did a one off job for 10 days and earned £1300 cash in hand.Took my wife to the Seychelles on the way back Cat Stevens got the aisle seat and in Addis Ababa we sat on the stairs of the VC10 and had a beer, nice guy.
Wow, what a memory!
Average wage in 1976 was about £70 so you done good !
Young Cat Stevens. ✌☮
That was a great record!
Give them some dope. They might smile 😊
Does anyone else think the crowd looks depressed?
He’s singing about their depressing lives.
Not depressed more reserved in those days. I remember them
Yeah, those are the saddest-looking dancers I've ever seen 😮
They'll be depressed in 2024, because they'll all be pushing 80!
Looks like they were there to watch something else, like an opera or a one act play and he's really peeing them off by standing up all of a sudden and singing. 😂
Oh wow, so adorable : )

The Beat Club is/was a West German television show. Artists filmed for the shows were filmed in Bremen, West Germany. So if you're wondering about how "depressed" these youth looked, they and their parents had just survived a major World War a little over 20 years prior.
Wow. That explains a lot. Thanks
Beat Club 🎸❤ a highlight for the post-war generation...
....and we still look depressed because of music nowadays 😂
Merry Xmas!🎄
Reminds me of a Charles Dickens novel!!!
i love this old uk shows where the singers have to be all happy and fun about their grim / sad songs beacuse that´s tv baby

Love Yusuf! ❤️
The Gretsch Tennessean, with painted f holes and Bigsby Tremelo arm - my first guitar!
Thanx, you were such a great audience!!
Thanks mate.
First song that made me think working life might get boring 😀
He was all of 19 here.
So cool to find a song I never knew
Only 12, I owned my very first radio for one year.
This clip is from the UK right?
SO EXCITED about Yusuf's new release!
He gets younger and wiser every day!
I was 11 When This Came out. BRILLIANT AND STILL TRUE !!!TODAY 😳😔😁g
John Paul Jones played Fender Bass VI on this!
The dancing girl at 0:55 with the beehive hair looks like John Lennon in drag. This is Cat Stevens as I've never seen him before and I've been listening to him for most of my life!
Nice smiley crowd
God how fit was Cat Stevens/ Yusef Islam ❤❤❤

At 01:37 he should change the lyrics to
And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had

Does anyone else remember a radio programme calle Round Midnight? The presnter was Brian Matthews and he used part of the instrumental as his theme tune.
I love his post tuberculosis voice more💕
1:36 Mad World, anyone?
Absolutely!
I am one of the managing directors of cc carpentry London and this is our theme tune to get the guys working hard.
Started work in 66 the company was owned by Harding and son all us apprentices would
change the words to this song when it came on the radio 😂😂
A GREAT TALENT.
I am sure not the first one to notice that Cat Steven's beautiful middle eight lifted in its entirety by Tears for Fears for Mad World, not 'adapted', lifted wholesale and planted into their song. I love both tracks actually!
I haven't heard this in 55 years. Funny only the 'working all day, all day, all day' fragment is remembered. Cat seems less than enthusiastic about capitalism but it would take me 6 more years before I could ever afford to buy music I wanted. Tea 4 the Tillerman- one of my first purchases.
Not gonna lie this song randomly came up and it's a Bop
Now, I am and always have been, a big fan of Cat Stevens... and I've always LOVED this song... that driving bass-line is just fabulous! BUT where the hell did they get that crowd? Some very weird-looking people in that audience... and one or two who just seemed to be wondering where the hell they were! What were they on?!!! (And where can I get some?!!!) 😉
the bass in this song (and this album) was played by john paul jones, that was of course before led zeppelin was formed
