      Question(I don't think you mention this in the video): Does the PSIO support game shark code input? It's not mentioned on the website, but is worth asking about.

      @@CybdynSystems Unfortunately I have the older, better, GameShark for the same port on the back as this device. So if I'm going to replace it, the PSIO has to have the same, or similar, functionality. EDIT; To qualify, I'd love to get one, but I'm not willing to live without my GS and I am not a fan of the CD version.

    I love watching people mod their consoles with those SD loaders - they are amazing for playing old games and your disc drive not working. I really am only missing chips that allow the passing of HDMI-CEC messages. For instance, turning the push-button on the PS1 into a tap button, wiring a secondary switch to it and that into a CEC enabled RGB output and that into a HDTV. Each time you switch your source to that HDMI channel, the PS1 will boot, go into PSIO and thus give you all your games. Pair that with a wireless controller and you are golden! ...or ask Alexa to "Turn on my PlayStation 1" and just kick back with a controller and wait for the magic to happen, lol. Really love those devices and wish i was a PCB engineer myself to do that on my own. But with a visual impairment, even sodering is not exactly an option - how unfortunate... Loved this video and looking forward to new content! ^.^

The onimusha series!) but was in primary school when these came out and had my dream console- THE N64! The only console I out grew ! Ended up getting a PlayStation during my mainly PC gaming stage (which persisted but was and is split between this gen and last gen consoles, along with my retro stuff ) and I considered it a massive upgrade with more mature type games.. perfect information but found another one of these type devices by “castlevania games” so need to do more research on what the heck is the difference!

    Very informative :)
    I found the same with one I had here to install, it isn't particularity stable and quite easy to dislodge.
    Larger cartridges like the Xplorer/Xploder by Fire International used a through-hole bolt to one side of the parallel port so that using the ON/OFF switch wouldn't cause it to fall out. The shell they are using for this is based on the generic Caetla / Action Replay form factor; I don't believe any of these had such a bolt to prevent it being wobbly.

    Great video. I've been impressed with the PSIO since I got mine installed and apart from some compatibility issues, it's nice to not have to burn CD-Rs to play translation patched games on real hardware anymore.
    I did want to point something out though. At the start of the video you mention emulation in later generations for backwards compatibility. Emulation is used for PS games on the PS3, but not the fat PS2 models. The fat PS2's IO chip is actually the PS1 CPU clocked the same as it was on the PS1 with the same 2 MB of RAM it had on the PS1, and the PS2 also brings the entire PS1 sound chip along as SPU2. On these models of PS2, the system just runs the PS1 title on the IO die and SPU2, and idles the PS2 hardware while it's doing it, which is why the compat is nearly perfect.
    On the slim they replaced that IO chip with some weird IBM-made PPC system that emulates the old PS1 hardware, which is why the compat on those newer PS2 models isn't quite as accurate.

    I remember before I had my Japanese ps1 modded I used to do the swap trick.The game would be inserted and then the ps1 logo would appear and you waited for the disc to stop and grabbed the game out of the ps1 and slammed in your incompatible game and it worked.

    There is some sort of high-pitched noise when you speak in the beginning. But well, I do have a PlayStation 1 with a parallel port and I would like this mod. But I think it's just too expensive. And I already have a modchip anyway.

    You may have missed it, but the music in Ridge Racer started two seconds late after the announcer says "Go!" This is due to a bug in the CU2 processing from multi-bin merged game images. Cybdyn is currently working on this, but has been a standing issue for a while. There are still also a lot more compatibility issues than 99.9% makes it sound, but the upcoming firmware update sounds promising. One more thing, Cybdyn doesn't do switch board installations anymore, but as you said it's not hard to find installers around the world.

    • @Izquierda
      @Izquierda 4 года назад

      @@RMCRetro If you want to fix them now you can try to manually edit the CU2 files to fix the timing, adding 2 seconds to each audio track (not the data track), though it's probably better to wait for the update for both the PSIO menu and the Systems Console utility, and redo your CU2s.

  • @faustianblur1798
    @faustianblur1798 4 года назад +2

    It's a shame there isn't an option to use a boot disc of some sort on already modded consoles, instead of adding yet another chip. Otherwise it seems likely simpler to boot images from USB/HDD on a soft modded PS2, with the bonus of component output (useful for capture cards).

    I wonder what happened to my Playstation, maybe it's still around somewhere! Think I sold it to a mate to help pay for a Voodoo2 3D card back in the day...
    It seems most people crack open PS1's and find they've already had a modchip installed.
    The parallel port is interesting, I wonder if Sony ever had any ideas for it.

      Tbh i bought in the last few years 4 PS1. 3 of these were the big ones and the latter was the mini one, all of them except the latter one had modchips (funny thing is that i thought ps1 accepted burned discs without a mod required bc of this lol)

    I think the parallel port on that playstation handles 3 megabits per second, not megabytes. But yeah still ample speed considering 150kbps is 1x cdrom speed. A 20 speed cdrom is possible and thusly circa 2x DVD movie speed.

      GitarStu it’s definitely meant for those who really want to continue using the PS1 hardware itself instead of using a PS2 or Backwards compatible PS3, or one of the various emulators.
      I’ve actually got one. I waited a few weeks because I sent my PS1 to them and when I got it back, it was very well done. The wires were all nice and straight, the solder joints were perfect and it boots up great.
      It is a shame that this hadn’t come around sooner. But I’m glad I have one.
      I’m keen to buy another and try my hand at doing the install myself as I have been practicing soldering and am confident I can get it done.
      In all I spent about $160 US for it.
      It was expensive, and I don’t use it often. But I’m glad I have a piece of gaming and modding history.

    I want this for all disc based consoles, disc drives sooner or later die (I'm still sad and angry that my dreamcast's laser died a few years ago). my ps1 still works fine, but I'm not enjoying it, I don't play it because I don't want to waste the laser... and when I play, I'm nervous all the time like I'm doing something "bad". I play more ps2 because I load the games from the computer's hard disk using a LAN cable, so no laser wasting involved.

    I really wish I had kept my PS1; modchipped and complete with an Xploder FX cartridge in the IO port. Speaking of which. the wobble on the PSIO could be fixed easily. The Xploder had pins that socketed into the Playstation and a screw that secured it. I see no reason why they couldn't implement the same thing.

    Next time you have to deal with old tape residue, try a few drops of zippo lighter fluid (or any generic brand) instead of IPA; it works miracles! And usually no hard scrubbing required. Don't worry, it won't damage the board.
    Edit: spelling
