Apologies for the lack of energy during the tutorial segment, it was late at night and for personal reasons I wasn't feeling the greatest. Not looking for pity, i'll be okay and future videos will be better! Regardless, I hope you enjoyed
also imo forcing energy only makes media more mentally tiring over time, and if anything, i personally enjoy the style commentary used in the tutorial segments more.
It would be so sick if you continued this as a series and brought on popular layout creators to help dive into different aspects of gameplay creating. The first example that comes to mind is an episode on intensity featuring xVoid.
two things i'd like to add: -when it comes to click sync, you don't have to follow the song 100%. now, what i mean by this isn't only that "you dont have to click all the notes in the melody/beat, just some! leave visual sync for that!" no, what i mean is that the click pattern could be seen as its own separate rhythm. for the few people that know what im talking about, i like to imagine its like taiko no tatsujin note hits. basically, you're playing your own beat *along with* the song, not *strictly copying* the song. and reminder that this is only an option, you can still go full clicksync or you can go with complete disregard for the song's rhythms like those 1.9 levels. experiment! -knowing some music theory stuff helps. not for the sake of naming stuff (using strict labeling in creative avenues is all too important imo) but for the sake of knowing what parts of a song make it unique and how to generally identify and use those patterns. around 10:25 you mention it, but you like to use elongated, smooth gameplay (dash orbs) for a longer note. once again, this is about knowing options and not making everything up on the spot. it can be demotivating when you're making a layout to a smooth/legato-ish and the only movements you can think of involve short/stacatto jumps and changes in velocity.
I do agree that clicksync should be somewhat different from the melody. Makes layouts less boring and more fun to play. As a layout creator myself, I prefer having this type of sync, keeps me motivated in building and finishing actually decent layout.
for the first tip, i feel like a very good (albeit mainstream) example is kyouki. the clicks in it are something that a drummer might cook up when listening to the song, but very much not strictly following the song
I think that a series like this would be amazing for the gameplay community. I often see new creators leave the art after a little bit of building because they don't know how to continue or improve. Not only that, but honestly some creators give really vague feedback. A video like this, I feel, is really helpful towards these new creators, giving them a good base and understanding of how gameplay works. Please continue this, and I look forward to the structuring video as well, as I still have trouble with that 😂
Im fairly new to gd but more than playing i find creating much more enjoyable but its surprisingly hard to find any tutorials for level creation. I've been looking through dozens of levels and layouts to learn from and these types of videos are so appreciated :) thanks
this is the exact video i've been tryina search for for such a long time! i haven't seen a gameplay video discuss how important the playtest trail is and how much it matters when making gameplay, so happy I'm subbed to u so i could easily find this video :D
I see some of my friend ONLY make click sync gameplay and it hurts my soul. I’ll send them this video to show them what is possible without solely click sync.
idk if is bc my main is 4K mania games and not gd as many think (its not like I dont play gd that usual, I have 10 cps lol) but for me a level with not click sync feels wrong.
Me: A very advanced and experienced sync designer. You: A very advanced and amazing teacher for sync designing. This is amazing!! Keep up the great work 🎉❤
7:48 what you're describing is ghosting, it's a common thing in a lot of music especially jazz where notes are purposely omitted in a phrase, but implied
This is really helpful! I think it'd be very important to make a tutorial of structuring since it's complicated for people that are starting with layout making, and besides it something that it's really important for layouts to really look good I personally struggle with this topic a lot and it'd be really helpful I'm looking forward to!
sync is essential for gameplay, without sync the level may feel off from the song, now im not saying that every single click needs to be synced to the music 100%,but if you managed to make the gp match and sync with the song, then its perfect
Would definitely be cool to see a totorial about gimmick creating like heat/cold meters, new game modes and many more, how to add SFX, and how to create engaging decoration and atmosphere
yo never seen yo face before man, anyhoo i'm already smh a great layout creator i just suck with the fx yk. something interesting for people new around here should be a structures tutorial, originality and stuff is missin' sometimes anyways thanks for 'em brother !
pretty accurate and great video and im glad you also include other types of sync wanted to ask whats the song youve used for the layout, sounds pretty challenging to build to
this video was great. you emphasized the most important things 👌🏼 I just think you could go a bit more in-depth with the felt- and visual sync like you did with the clicksync, where you showed the patterns and methods you used on the layout (maybe in future videos)
Whenever I use rotating gameplay or try to skip a section of a song using the song trigger, it always makes it borderline impossible to keep the level in sync. With rotated gameplay I can never get the music-preview-line to start where I want (even if I’m not trying to make rotated gameplay at that moment, if there is rotated gameplay earlier in the level, sometimes the line will snap to when that rotated gameplay begins, even if I’m well past it in the editor). Using the “playback” button does somewhat remedy this issue but it makes it significantly more tedious. Additionally, if I try to skip to another part of a song with some fade-time to it using the song trigger, the sync will completely break! If the music-preview-line pass through the trigger then it works fine, but if you go any further in the editor, for some reason it starts playing the song too early or something and it no longer syncs. Essentially what my point is: is there any fundamental thing I am missing that could fix these issues? As it stand currently, it makes it extremely difficult to make the gameplay I want while making it sync a bearable process
nothing particularly wrong with it, however for certain decoration styles it can rather difficult translating it (Art and Modern in particular) It can also get difficult when making top extreme demon gameplay, where specific timings are needed, and floating spikes make things impossible. So i’d just be careful to not make it a requirement in your style, but aesthetically it’s super epic 🔥
I'm 7 minutes in the video... I mean, thanks for the tutorial, but the only big problem I see with this video is that, you didn't actually taught us anything practical, just showed us examples with little explanations. I'm not saying I'm any good at greeting, not do I say I'm good at it, but I believe most of inexperienced creators won't actually understand "why" or "how" did you come up with this or that gameplay piece. I see most of creators just doing the same style they've seen on RUclips, without asking "why did you come up with that decision", and "How can I come up with something like this". Edit: nvm you explain it better later😭
wont even watch that gd creating tutorials are meaningless because the whole point of layouts in gd is how you represent the song and ideas in your own style this includes all the aspects: sync, structuring, dynamic and etc if you straight up tell people whats wrong and whats right in gp making you make them follow your style which is not right dont say guys im wrong because i didnt watch the video, im pretty sure theres nothing objective in it
