One of the very few musicians on the planet I could listen to all day long - nonstop. Such a talent and great individual. He's made this world a better place.
It's incumbent on him as a Mason.
I am both a David Bowie fan and a Rick Wakeman fan. I find myself crying and I can't help it. This is so beautiful.
Ήμουν 16 όταν πρωτάκουστα αυτό το μαγικό άγγιγμα των πλήκτρων.
I’m too
I'm too ❤
Probably the best keyboardist/pianist in rock music history.
Emerson was considerably better in many ways.
@@stanleyklein524 they are both best at what they did/do. There’s been very few great keyboardists in rock…Lord, Rudess, Argent, Emerson…I’ll still stick with Wakeman as my favorite.
Oh that's a tough one. I can claim claim it's like comparing apples and oranges. Then declare they were both the best. I lied down and watched the stars on a late Sunday Night to ELP closing the three-day August Jam. @@stanleyklein524
No, Les Dawson was WAY better.
@@stanleyklein524Not so👎
Rick Wakeman is one of the last remaining links to one of the greatest eras of music. Watching this video, and seeing Rick's face as he plays, reminds us all how fragile is that llink. The sheer poignancy of it makes one weep.
great comment
Well put.
👑 Roma 👑
I remember the great keyboard artists growing up, almost in competition, Rick Wakeman, Keith Emerson, Tony Banks and others. Those were good times.
I have only just found this artist.
I love the sound, his style of playing.
This is so delicately played and phrased, it's almost holy and otherworldly.
Well stated. When I listen to his music, I sometimes feel like Rick Wakeman is not of this world. His music is enigmatic, though his personality is so down-to-earth. My favourite for sure.
This otherwordliness is audible in some of Yes' tracks too. Very well put.
It's nothing, if compared do classical pianists.
The universe plays through him
What a beautiful tribute. I love the embellishments, it's like the sun sparkling on a lake.
Beautifully put. That is very true
He actually played on the Original Song
Dear Rick, you certainly don't remember me. I am (now) an old Brazillian /Dutch lady who has always loved your music. When I was young, you made a concert in Sao Paulo, my home city. I was there in the crowd, screaming your name. When the show finished, I ran to the stage and frantically tried to find you. I was greeted by a number of security personnel, but I plead to see you. I mentioned my admiration for you, and one guy looked at me with kindness and allowed me to enter and see you. I could not believe my luck. You were sitting on a table, I remember looking at you: you are a giant, literally. I was so amazed to be by your side that I almost could not say a word. It was pretty embarrassing because I knew it was a unique opportunity, but I could only utter a few words in my (then) poor English. Soon, I was out of the room. It was a long time ago but I will never forget this moment, one of the very special of my life. Yours was the first vinyl I had and the first CD I heard uncountable times until someone requested me to stop. Your music and energy have been ringing in my ears. If you are reading it now, know that I am grateful for your life and for your work, which will always be with us. I read you will be touring in the UK this year, I got tickets for De Montfort Hall on 30th November 2024! Probably, I will not be able to jump onto the stage like before, but I will cherish the entire show! Lots of love, Cristina
This is truly beautiful. Rick Wakeman played and created such stunning music. I truly believe the 70's was a time when some of the most awesome music was inspired/created.
It was music that seemed to touch the very soul. Listening to almost every genre of the era brings such intense memories and feelings.
@@MrRubybare best era of music
People had an attention span of more than 5 seconds, didn’t have their heads buried in their phones and the radio isn’t tell them what to listen to.
I’m so glad I grew up in the 70’s……
Agree but would put the 60s in there as well and it was all ruined by punk rock
@@johnblakeley Totally totally agree.
Rick was such an important part of one of Bowie's greatest albums, "Hunky Dory."
Rick played the piano for Life on Mars
When I was a kid my dad made me listen to the group YES and until the hour I always remember that you are a good pianist, greetings from Chile.
All other genius aside, I find it incredible how Rick picks out the lead melody in his many solo performances. It's so much more than a loudness thing. The balance of tones he achieves is sublime.
Wonderful!! I know you are shocked to get a text from me here on my private RUclips channel, 😊I want you to be calm, sincerely this is my youtube for chatting and getting fans' feedback. I love being free. Thank you for your love and support.🎹🎹🎹🎹
...and this song, in particular, requires that transition from excitement to sublime to be expressed with ONE instrument. Masterful.
Without Rick Wakeman, dozens of absolute classic singles would never have made it. He is the undisputed master of melody
Paul Buckmaster arranged many pop songs of the day, including this one. I discovered today that he also co-arranged an obscure record I was listening to this morning: Stomu Yamashta's "sea and sky"
I'd argue he's more of a master of harmony, he's unparalleled in terms of his ability to add to melodies or chord structures.
Rick didn't create this melody, but his performances are very melodic. I think performing and arranging are Rick's greatest strengths, aside from telling a good joke.
I always find it somewhat amusing/disturbing that some people can take the time to listen to something creative/beautiful and then click on the thumbs down. I'd love to see those individuals attempt to create ANYTHING.
Those thumbs down are mostly generated by youtube
Most thumbs down come from self-absorbed losers.
I had the privilege of seeing Mr. Wakeman live in Argentina several times...how talented this exceptional artist has..what a superb level!! clap clap clap.-
Rick you make it look effortless. I wish I could play the piano.
sensational interpretation... piano mastery... highlighting the genius of bowie
Epic !!! Rick Wakeman was the first show I watch at my life - I was a teen and he came to Rio de Janeiro, Brasil!!! I love him !! He is a master !!! A genius at the piano !!
Me too, in 1975 at Maracanãzinho !! It was the first and the most important show of my life !! Long live to Our True Born King Rick Wakeman !!
@@marceloamaral7762 Que legal !! Shows inesquecíveis né ?
OMG Rick, you've totally excelled yourself, this is the loveliest piano arrangement of Space Oddity I've ever heard ! (has anyone else done one ?)...
Check out Chris Hadfield's version. It has the added distinction of the first music video made in space.
He was the original keyboardist on that album...
Fantastic interpretation, my favorite David Bowie song.
Wow ! This is a truly epic rendition of Bowie's song. He played it like a master pianist.
He is THE master pianist!
@@drawdenotyep5029 Absolutely!
Don't forget that he was the keyboardist on that album, and on next, and Bowie took a lot of inspiration from him...
@@julipander5684 Thanks for letting me know. No wonder he sounds as good as he does.
I was gonna say, LIKE a master? 😁
He just makes it look so effortless. Incredible musician, all round great bloke. So funny as well. I'd be happy if I could play at 10% of his level. Keep playing Rick.
Your listening to 5+ hours of practice a day, every day, over Ricks entire lifetime. Rick obviously loves keyboards and music........he put in the time and effort. You can do it too. I've watched a 5 year old Japanese kid absolutely tear up a violin and play and astoundingly. 5 years old......if he started at age 1 he had only put in 4 years of practice and instruction. You can do it too.
Rick, you are the best keyboarder of all time in the world.
Sibylle Meller yes. Very true. He is amazing
And extremely down to earth
sneakers and all.
'Keyboarder'?
I would beg, borrow and scrape to see Wakeman and Vangelis play together ... an unlikely thing to get the best two "keyboarders" in the same space, but one can dream.
This is beautiful playing , thankyou .
As a keyboard musician since a boy and a pro Player everywhere I am in awe at his skills, only matched perhaps by Keith Emerson.
Superb.
beautiful. a fitting tribute to bowie by a man who played on some of bowie's best songs.
Amazing how he represents so many parts of the song with just two hands
Been a Fan of Rick's since i was 14,He is a Real Legend.
Fantastic!
Also, Wakeman just might be the real "most interesting man in the world".
It's odd, I love Rick and Yes and Bowie, but apart from that... just watching this is hypnotic... I can't seem to take my eyes away... Beautiful
God bless you, Mr Rick Wakeman. You has added a note of beautiful sound to my youth. All the sound of your music was a companion for me and my brothers. I enjoyed all your compositions... Best regards for you. I think you are the best keyboard player of the world. Thanks a lot for grow up my spirit. Greetins from Spain.
Rick's playing here is like sitting at the edge of a small lake, and as the wind creates little waves that lap at the edges and the sun in the clear blue sky reflects, it glistens off the peaks of those little waves.
Embellishments on natural beauty, only certain peaks pick up the reflection whilst others dip away forming troughs that support the peaks and overall it makes a flowing beauty that is constantly moving and made of many different dimensions.
Inspiring musicianship.
I just heard the album Piano Portrait. it's an amazing piano album, believe me!!
such a beautiful piece of music
Beautiful
such ;)
This amazing - i can hear every word in my head - I am Major Tom to ground control
Perfect.
....wonderful!!..always a pleasure to see Rick Wakeman performance...
Those 4 chords in the interlude,C F G A just happen to show up in 1977 for the majestic intro to Parallels from Going For The One and Chris Squire is the sole composer.
Beautiful , creative. Rick is a exceptional musician.
I have been lucky enough to have seen him 4 times. He is amazing live. My favorite keys man .One of the very best alive today.
great!
Sou fã, apaixonada!!! Conheci e vi de pertinho no Teatro Bradesco!!!
wow beautiful
Emotional, one great artists tribute to another great artist, Bowie a man before his own time and Wakeman a legend still today
That was beautiful!!! Sent shivers up my spine!
I normally hate piano, but I can't get enough of these wonderful Rick Wakeman videos . Thank for the uploads ;)
45 seconds in and I am crying, a very touching rendition...
Music simply can't get much more beautiful than this stellar rendition !!!###
I'm trying to learn piano - this makes me want to go practice
Its incredible how Great Britain produced the best musicians of Prog Rock,Hard Rock,Pop,Heavy...,alone,compared to the intire world.
Is it possible to get a note transcription of this greatness??
Este Senhor toca mesmo muito: O melhor nas teclas
Totally awesome and I’m having lunch with him tomorrow!! I’m so excited! Wonderful wonderful man. And as a pianist myself he is the one who makes the piano talk…. Xx
This was very nice. I would have LOVED to see your Mellotron work on it.
Still blowing me away after all these decades, Rick. Thank you for that. Bless you for that.
Beautiful, as always Rick, see you in March in Brighton x
Brillant!!!
Sensacional escutar Rick Wakeman, de trabalho novo. Journey to the centre of the Earth, Rsphsodies in Blue.....e agora Piano Odyssey
Simply beautiful. Thank you.

The piano in Cat Steven´s Morning has broken.
Yes he did it
Oh IT's True? I didn't know!
Simply a master piece ! Thank you.
Lindo, emocionante... Perfeito.
Hi Rick, Fab u Lous !!! I'm coming to see you in Buxton next month... you've just got to play this ! Thanks Roj, Preston UK
Such a unique style, I just love the way he plays.
Unbelievable recording sound... please record my piece little red
Simply his commendable abilities, extensive and generously demonstrated...
If somebody like David Bowie hires you to play on his record and tells you “just play what feels right”, then chances are you did something right in your early career...
Rick Wakeman at Peel Castle that was something else sheer joy he lived on the island
Who else clicked Like within two seconds of the start?
1second
This guy still an amazing musician !
El màs grande Tecladistas y Pianista de todos los tiempos ...
I would love to hear you do Life on Mars - I think your work on that song was outstanding
Thanks Rick! An inspiration in back in the early Yes years and still an inspiration today. I often listen to your piano music while putting together my RUclips videos. Just love your recent piano versions of classic pieces.
When i listen to this I actually hear David singing along. Brilliant. Cheers
An absolute legend on keyboard
Rick, Keith Emerson, and only a few others were able to do stuff across the musical world and not screw up the feeling.
And here come the tears...
Thank you so much Mr. Wakeman ! You are a legend, one day I will still have the privilege of going to your concert! Greetings from Brazil
Fantastic musician. He can rock with the best of them and he sure knows his way around synthesizers, keyboards and organs but the way he played this was just superb. I think David Bowie would approve. Brilliant sir.👍👍🇨🇦
Simply beautiful.
I do love your music,I find it relaxing and does uplift my soul. Every day wether morning or night time you are always on the background to keep my day complete.Thank you.You are great pianist.

So Beautiful… It’s like David is right here, present as I listen. Missing him.
And the awesome Rick Wakeman ❤️.
Thank You...Mr Wakeman...for so many years the music you played struck a cord ...pun intended...The very first live performance I saw you was back in the early seventies with a group called YES...At a place called the Armory in Minneapolis Mn. USA for the debut of Close To The Edge...It changed my life...The Firebird Suite and the revolving disk filed the room with light reflected off its mirrored surface what an amazing performance Howe...Anderson...White...Squire...Leaping in the air with his Rickenbacker Bass>>>Mr Wakeman surrounded by keyboards drinking a Heineken...Best regards Rick Wakeman...
Bowie was a great man!
Effortlessly perfect....and no music sheets!
An exquisite & beautiful rendition of the Bowie by the Maestro Wakeman. Thanks for sharing.
Rick inspires me to play period
Beautiful work! And I love his trade mark riff...!
The beauty of this is, I can listen and the rest of the world just disappears Thanks
Genius...composer and performer
Beautiful from my favorite keyboardist
Flawlessly played.wow
He was Bowie's keyboard player for the spiders from Mars lp. He left to play with yes with Bowie's blessings!
Such a different take and flavour to Mike Garson and equally as elegant and beautiful.
Best pop-rock keyboard ever. Rick Wakeman enlight all artists he plays with...
I love his work since the 70's, when I first Listened to "morning has broken" from Cat Stevens.
What's with the weird, out of nowhere, aerial shot at 2:22?
It's an aerial shot of The Old Granary Studios in Norfolk. It's where the Piano Portraits album was recorded and where this video was shot.
