I get that it would be sacrilegious putting a TCB song in #1 but Spies are Forever is a masterpiece. Mary Kate's vocals still give me chills, they're so beautiful.
Plus the song does such a good job! It becomes the main leifmotif for the entire musical and is repeated several times in other key songs! And it foreshadows a key plot detail!!! It's so good!

Whenever I listen to it I have to stop whatever I'm doing and just listen in awe at some of MKW's vocals, and it makes me emotional with lines like "who do you trust / who do you betray" while Curt and Owen look at each other and then away, fantastic choreography all along, and the gorgeous way all the different parts come together.

I like this idea for a ranking video! And it was great being reminded of all these songs after a bit of a break from Starkid. Of course it was inevitable that I wouldn't agree with most of the rankings because I generally seem to have a very different taste from most of the Starkid fandom on RUclips :p I'm not gonna do all of them because that would take too much thinking but here's my top 6: (also sorry for all the mini essays I wrote, y'all don't need to read these, I'm just writing them for myself) 6. Fire - This one is admittedly not ideal as an opening number since it's so different in style from all the other songs in the show but I just love the mood so much, it's gives me the chills in the best way 5. Holy Musical B@man - Perfect opening for the show, catchy as hell, Dylan's voice was MADE for this. My only issue is that it does get a bit repetitive and it's a bit too long IMO. 4. Not Over Yet - This opening had to justify the need for a sequel and man did it deliver. Also it's just a great song and Tyler Brunsman is great as Lucius. Also opening the show with the VILLAIN SONG? Honestly genius. It works so well for this story. 3. Going Back To Hogwarts - I mean it's a classic, couldn't leave it out. I absolutely love how it builds up gradually and how it starts so somber (while still humorous) and then turns triumphant. It's also a perfect theme for the entire Very Potter series. Impossible not to sing along. I'd say this is way too long but it's not because it actually introduces SO MUCH all in one go so you don't even notice how long it is. I swear it feels like a 1 minute song. The only minus is that some of the humour doesn't work for me but not so much that I can't enjoy it despite that. 2. Spies are Forever - Also a perfect opening, sets the mood perfectly, Mary Kate Wiles has the perfect voice for it, also it's just an amazing song and it comes back all throughout the show for a reason. Completely unforgettable. 1. The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals - Look, I don't even know what to tell you, I just absolutely love this song. I have no complaints whatsoever. It's the fucking bop to end all bops as far as I'm concerned and everybody in this phenomenal cast (except Jon obv but that can't be helped) gets a solo line and they all deliver their A game. Of course Jeff especially just shines in this. And seriously, I just appreciate the skill and practice that went into this because this would not work if the timing or tone or performance was off even a little bit. They had to hit it perfectly for it to come together and they did. And this includes the choreography and the camera work and editing on the video too. And I know humour is even more subjective than musical taste but the humour in this song? Holy fuck, does it works for me. It's just absolutely hilarious. The only joke that didn't quite land for me was the entrance fake-out because that was so predictable... but even then they save it by having the reactions of the cast be absolutely hilarious.
you definitely chose the top three best opening numbers that do what an opening number should - establishing the world of the show & how the main characters interact with it!! also those are easily just my favorites of the list evaluating them as songs (adding in not over yet and wiggly jingle perhaps)
Personal opinion incoming: I would personally put Fire (Firebringer) much higher, though it depends on your criteria. If you were looking at just the song itself, then yeah I agree (it's not exactly a complex song and doesn't have deep lyrics lol...), but I think it sets up the musical sooo well (sets a really cool tone, is really representative of the music/major plot moments, contextualizes the time period/costumes/choreography, etc) that overall it deserves to have done better. Another one: so so agree with BF being towards the bottom... I'm sorry, but that musical (in general) is just sooo overrated. Top 3 are also spot on... I could argue it for a long time lol and leave an essay in your comments, but I'll save y'all some time and just say that they're all amazing and Starkid is the besttttttt
Agree with BF. It still has a lot of recency bias that I think is finally wearing off. It doesn’t help that the Wiggly Jingle is actually pretty pitchy, and one of the worst songs in the show

And I wouldn't call BF overrated - I think it actually gets an inordinate amount of hate and is (in my opinion) probably Starkid's second strongest show to date. I do agree that Wiggly Jingle is probably the worst song in the show though, and does deserve its ranking here.

I agree because Not Over Yet slaps so hard as a villain song and a great way to start a sequel to a musical that didn’t need a sequel But then again, Going Back To Hogwarts is Starkid’s genesis and a great nostalgic song for Harry Potter (even when She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named doesn’t want to let the franchise go after a decade) and Starkid.

Dream A Little Harder and Spies Are Forever are such clever songs Dream A Little Harder is such a good satire of Belle, and, like the original, it sets up the main character and the environment of the musical flawlessly. Spies Are Forever is also a clever reference to all those opening songs to the Bond films, and it sets up the tone of the musical greatly. As I was watching this I found myself getting kind of mad... not actually mad of course, you're completely entitled to your opinions and it's interesting to see, and they're all amazing songs anyway, but just wishing some were ranked differently. So I decided to make my own list (also I was kind of curious to think about where some of them would go.) This is the End is excluded because I haven't seen AVPSY yet. And these are ranked on a combination of how good they sound musically, how much they make me feel, and how well they set up the show, different ones relying more on different things for their ranking. I told myself I didn't have time to explain all of them, and I didn't, but there were a few I couldn't help but give a little bit of explanation : 13. Ani 12. Solve it Squad 11. Tickle Me Wiggly Jingle ... here's the part where I go agh, I don't know what to put, I want all of these to be ranked super high! 10. Gone to Oregon 9. Fire (amazing, the drumming; the way the harmonies are so pure and it shows off the unique musical style of Firebringer, it immediately drops me into the mood of the show, that feeling of "the course of history is being changed right now", makes me feel a lot. It's only here because it's short and lyrically minimal.) 8. Dream a Little Harder (this song is a stroke of genius in the way it sets up the themes of the show, especially with the visuals, and has some gorgeous music "our patience and our ardour" good god, so I feel like I should be putting it higher, but for some reason I don't have quite as much of an attachment as I do to the ones after it.) 7. Ok, I do not see how I wanna be is lowest. It’s such a good opener, it introduces the world, the norm and the wants of the main character while being a puppet bop

As I was watching this I found myself getting kind of mad... not actually mad of course, you're completely entitled to your opinions and it's interesting to see, and they're all amazing songs anyway, but just wishing some were ranked differently. So I decided to make my own list (also I was kind of curious to think about where some of them would go.) This is the End is excluded because I haven't seen AVPSY yet. And these are ranked on a combination of how good they sound musically, how much they make me feel, and how well they set up the show, different ones relying more on different things for their ranking. I told myself I didn't have time to explain all of them, and I didn't, but there were a few I couldn't help but give a little bit of explanation :

Fire (amazing, the drumming; the way the harmonies are so pure and it shows off the unique musical style of Firebringer, it immediately drops me into the mood of the show, that feeling of "the course of history is being changed right now", makes me feel a lot. It's only here because it's short and lyrically minimal.)
8. Dream a Little Harder (this song is a stroke of genius in the way it sets up the themes of the show, especially with the visuals, and has some gorgeous music "our patience and our ardour" good god, so I feel like I should be putting it higher, but for some reason I don't have quite as much of an attachment as I do to the ones after it.)
7. Me and My Dick (honestly, this is probably the one I listen to the most. I don't know what that says about me... but it's so much fun, and Joey and Joe sound fantastic together)
