Nasa Hat YESSS! I'm so glad you mentioned that! It is just so wonderful how Jeff's last note fades into Jaime's scream. I don't even know why I like it, but I do.
As an American I declare a moratorium on Canadian jokes. Canada has shown incredible patience and politeness at having to live next to a wacko country that selected a lying bloviating egotist for president who cares more about his reelection than thousands of people dying of an epidemic. If it comes to jokes I don't think the US is going to come off well.
No one is talking about how the line “his belly’s so squishy” from the jingle is repeated by the adults in feast or famine, which shows us that the jingle affected the adults more than the kids. Or maybe everyone knew and I have 1 brain cell bouncing around like a windows screen saver.

I honestly dont know how starkid went from a comedic musical take on Harry Potter, to a show with messages about government distrust, American poverty, loss of the people you love, what people will do for love/adoration, abusive relationships, greed, alcoholic relationships, etc. it's astounding how well versed these people are in writing and acting skills. (I love starkid)
A theater troupe, like a person, has to grow or die. I am so so onboard with the direction Starkid is taking, into darker, more adult, more character-driven stories, with more at stake! I know many fans would like them to stick to light comedies. I love their previous work but I also love their Hatchetfield shows.

I am not always a Jeff falsetto fan, but there are a couple of them that I can't not love- (I can't listen to You Tied up my Heart or What do You Want, Paul? sometimes but that may just be because both of the scenes make me kinda uncomfortable-)
Half of this video is dissecting the economic, social, and political undertones in the show, and the other half is thirsting over Jaime, and if that's not the Starkid fandom in a nutshell, I don't know what is.
Theory about Monsters and Men: I firmly believe it's both a call to action for the President and a way for Gen. McNamara to gather his gumption because I think he may have some psychic ability. He knew he was going to step into the Black and White and face both Wiggly and (if the other theory holds, Uncle Wiley aka Wilbur Cross his former mentor) aka the things he dreads
I really hate the fact that everyone dislikes California, it’s actually a really true song written from the heart of a struggling group of young people.
I really love that song! It captures an important life experience. I can’t relate to it as much as the songs from older characters like Tom’s songs, though, because Lex has some amount of innocence/ingenuity that I simply don’t anymore :/
justdanyplz THANK YOU. Dylan just makes me cry sad and happy tears all the time with his vocals. And Joey just makes me happy even playing a villain(which he should play more of cuz his singing when a villain is just mmmmm)
So I was singing along to made in america while watching this and my cat started meowing. The thing is when he meows I always respond so my wires crossed and I started singing made in america to the key of my cats meowing
I don’t think they every really told Lex that Ethan died ALSO I really agree with what you were saying about how they write songs with certain singers in mind, take Lauren for example she has a really high octave range and they really had that in mind in firebringer Also I love Joey so I’m really happy about how high made in America was
Conspiracy theory: you only put what if tomorrow come low on the list so you could put CalifornMIA after and have us all experience the pure emotional whiplash of that jarring experience
i think you’re the first person i’ve seen who hasn’t put the wiggly jingle last or second last and honestly thank you?? it’s a fucking BOP and james is so hyped, curt is so cute, angela is so feral, and kim is so beautiful i just love them 🥺

Ngl, "Take Me Back" is always the one Black Friday song I forget because I just couldn't connect with it. But seeing you put it at #1 and explain WHY really made me appreciate the song a whole lot more and understand why so many more people love it. Overall, wonderful list and great commentary! Well done!
I’m so glad I could get my point across and make you understand it! It’s a deep moment and it’s not necessarily for everyone to enjoy it but for sure it’s my favorite part of the show.
I honestly fucking love his character!!! I feel like almost every worker of the world realizes the injustices of capitalism even when they’re not able to put words on it or don’t realize that this isn’t just their personal woes but the whole damn system. He really really captures that life experience and that class of individuals!
What you said about Kim in Wiggly Jingle is so true, I’ve had that part of the song in my head since the show came out Actually everything you said is true and I love this show so much
And then i remember why im sad i relate to Lex when i hear Black Friday (aka the song with lyrics im prolly getting tatted or "the universe is infinite and its definite..."
do you ever think about mcnamara's pained but resolute expression interacting with wiley and how wiley was likely the mentor he mentioned that swore loyalty to wiggley and then vanished (wiley being human in the b&w instead of a sniggle or something else, the name wilbur is similar to wiley, "i was a colonel once") and how it probably represents that sometimes you have to stand against the people you care about because anyone can be corrupted and even though you care about them you have to go against everything they believe in order to do what's right, which often leads to estrangement from those loved ones bc i do. a lot.
I mean, Kendall was playing Hannah for the last scene, so Tim couldn't be there - but I'm sure if they weren't the same actor, that Tim would've been there.
Lex in Black Friday actually kills me, especially in the second verse. The pure, barely contained rage in "Is there some lesson to learn? Should I never have wanted? I never even GOT STARTED! Or were the decks always just this stacked." The non-question that is the last line there; she knows they were and she's ALWAYS known that in some sense but she still let herself hope. She hid it behind this IDGAF attitude but deep down she *hoped* and *wanted* and now she's faced with the fact that it was all for naught. Even though she's prepared herself for failiure her whole live it still hurts because she let herself hope for it.
For me Black Friday (the song) has two meanings. Both one in the musical (which you hit on the head) and personally. While no my situation is far from Lex's, that song still hits it for me. My parents have been divorced and even 10 years later it's the most stressful part of my life. We see him every other weekend and almost every weekend I feel conflicted on going, and that's where the other meaning for the line "Friday is black for me" comes for me. I could go on forever about how I interpreted each line lol
Yeah I heard it in the digital ticket! But since the youtube version is what they actually wanted out in the world I try not to be ungrateful about what I kinda liked better in earlier shows.
after rewatching the show i can’t get over the fact that wiggly “preys on your deepest wants” and becky is there because a child patient (likely if not explicitly stated to be dying) only wants a wiggly
1:08 And here we see Dylan turn into Betelgeuse On a different note I appreciate the amount of commentary in here; I'm less obligated to disagree with rankings because you obviously understand and love all the songs which is really fun to see. My personal favorite is Monsters and Men because I'm a huge Jeff fan.
I honestly do love every single song, not all of them to the same level because all of us have our personal bagage and preferences coming into any given piece of fiction that influence what resonates with us, but I DO love the whole soundtrack. I wouldn’t want to do without any of the songs!
ARE WE NOT GOING TO DISCUSS HIS *VOICE* AT 26:56 ? BECAUSE WE SHOULD. "IN TIME TO LOVE YOU" LIKE UGH SIR, YOU ARE PERFECTION AND IF YOUR VOICE WAS A PERSON I WOULD GLADLY LET IT STAB ME IN THE THROAT, BUT IF YOU WANT TO YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME
dang i’ve watched a lot of black friday song rankings and this one really made me feel things i’m not sure if i agree with everything but dang your comments really made the impact of the songs come through dang
I'm glad that it at least had an impact! I'm not at all trying to claim that I have universal truth, this is just a reflection of my own enjoyment of the show and not at all objective.
I'm so happy you put What do You Say in the top 5 cause I feel like everyone disregards that song but its so. good. I swear to god. play it at all my major life moments. I'm talking graduation, wedding, birth of child, funeral. All.
deck the halls of northville high has NO RIGHT to be as bopping as it is. also am i the only one noticing how they faded into the studio version of feast or famine for the "squee squee" line?
I'm gonna preface this with the fact that I already put this in another rankings comments so if you already read it, I'm sorry. Now before we get into my whole mini essay with WITC I'm thinking about what you just said and I agree entirely but I am also weak and I hope my babies are okay. This leads into the fact, I live In an area right by an airport and the largest navy base in the world. The plane doesnt sound like anything besides one would hear at an airshow. Starkid might not know that though so I'm not gonna judge. President Goodman does already know what's happening so it could be argued that those planes could be bring feds and relief in the wake of this disaster. Now on to the fun part. There is something about What If Tomorrow that sticks with me. Every single time without fail when I listen to it I get chills. There certain parts that really stand out to me in it. The adding of the drums when Kendall sings adds such a weight to the music. The fact that Hannah doesnt sing throughout the show and also clearly doesn't like talking just makes this moment that much more impactful. When someone who never talks has something to say, you listen. Then the camera work. My favorite type of shot is the unbroken follow shot and the way it's used in this is perfect. The way the harmonies are layer back in forth in a not necessarily messy but rather organic matter works so well. It's like everyone is having their own thought and each and everyone is processing what is happening. In this show and TGWDLM, the way voices get layered back and forth while not forced is very clean and obviously arranged. It works because they arent thinking for themselves. In this song it's nothing but free thought and fear. Now on to quite possibly my favorite part. The counting. When you count down, you typically say all the numbers. If not, one usually does it by evens. Who counts down by odds. No one. It makes it just that much more tense and unnerving because it pushes forward this feeling that something is wrong. Now my favorite part. Kendall's last line. Her acting is amazing in this song but it stands out none more than this line. You can see the contempt and almost anger in her eyes as she sees what is about to happen. Her voice is nothing but pure emotion and it hits so heavy. Her final part is by far the most intense part of the show.
I literally fall asleep listening to What If Tomorrow Comes. I know that they probably all die at the end, but it just reassures me that tomorrow could come, and it could be better :)
i love this video so much your insights are so deep and meaningful and i almost entirely agree with your ranking anyways thank u for making it!! (and when i noticed hannah vibing in the back of caliform.i.a. i IMMEDIATELY went oh shes stimming!!!! im so happy it wasnt just me!!)
My favourite thing about What If Tomorrow Comes? Is the image of Tim just sitting in Emma's car, just waiting patiently while all this dramatic shit goes down
I forced my parents to watch Black Friday when it came out. I told them it was advertised as a Horror Comedy, but that I thought it was a lot darker and hit the feels more than most horror comedies do. They didn't believe me because the only other one they've watched parts of are hmb and avpm. My mum was crying at multiple points and my dad said that the song Black Friday hit home for him as it reminded him of his childhood. I agree wholeheartedly with all of your comments on black friday, I literally crying every time
I finally found someone who doesn't shit on Take Me Back! It's so beautiful and the vocals are so incredible. People also say that Tom and Becky's relationship was unnecessary and an afterthought but I disagree. This song just shows that adults go through a lot of shit too but don't always get their happiness back because they are afraid. Becky and Tom were both afraid and they could be afraid together. ILTSM
Like, everyone definitely has their own opinion but I can’t say I understand or share that one… When you hear Nick Lang talking about Tom and Becky it’s obvious he absolutely adores the relationship he’s crafted and I simply am so compelled by their story. Two traumatized individuals bonding over their experiences, that’s not an afterthought whatsoever it’s just the way this story was built…
Dude the explanation for why "What if tomorrow comes" is exactly how I feel about it. It's a fantastic song, but it is emotionally exhausting to listen to
Something about the way Becky says the "my lovely girl" just really makes my hair stand on end. Helps that the "California" and "Sweetheart" at the beginning of the song both have tritones. Also this is my favorite singing I've ever seen Dylan do.
You’re the only person I’ve seen who’s given any reason for putting What If Tomorrow Comes low, and it’s a GOOD reason too. Literally everyone else is like “ahaha isn’t this an amazing song!” and I’m just sitting here like yeah. Why’s it so low then. ALSO thank you for loving a supporting Jeff’s falsetto.
It’s one of these songs that I recognize is REALLY good but that just upsets me too much to listen to. I also never listen to Twisted (the song) because the 1001 Nights reprise in it just breaks me. Some of these songs are just really really effective.
When ever two people are singing into each other's faces reminds me of The Song That Goes Like This from Spamalot! Edit: I had no idea Kim and Curt did a cover of that song!

Half of this video is dissecting the economic, social, and political undertones in the show, and the other half is thirsting over Jaime, and if that's not the Starkid fandom in a nutshell, I don't know what is.
Waman hot, seize the means of production 😔
Ok but imagine in like 10 more years when Kendall becomes like the new queen of Starkid and she RUNS THIS SHIT
she's literally the start of the future of starkid, and im so excited!
I can’t relate to it as much as the songs from older characters like Tom’s songs, though, because Lex has some amount of innocence/ingenuity that I simply don’t anymore :/
jaime in a suit: where all lesbians share a brain
This also reminded me that i am bisexual by the grace of Dylan Saunders and Joey Ritcher damn near ALONE
justdanyplz THANK YOU.
The only valid way to sing it lol!
I like that you appreciate and enjoy Jeff’s falsetto just as much as I do
He sounds soooo good!!!
I don’t think they every really told Lex that Ethan died
ALSO I really agree with what you were saying about how they write songs with certain singers in mind, take Lauren for example she has a really high octave range and they really had that in mind in firebringer
Also I love Joey so I’m really happy about how high made in America was
Yeah nick confirmed that in a tweet that lex never got to know that ethan died
jadesketch17 That honestly is even sadder because she may have thought he was alone.
Take Me Back is one of the greatest Starkid songs ever written.
It really, really is!
this goes from
"Hnng girl hot"
to
"this is what's wrong with the economic system in America"
to
"BABY BABY BABY"
I am a woman of many thoughts
Conspiracy theory: you only put what if tomorrow come low on the list so you could put CalifornMIA after and have us all experience the pure emotional whiplash of that jarring experience
lol I just can't handle that song and I prefer others!
Take me back invented romantic love
How dare you make me cry over almost all of these songs by telling me the callbacks/subtext. Fantastic.
This show is so beautifully crafted :(

Cinematic Parallels: Dab in TGWDLM vs Dab in WITC
i think you’re the first person i’ve seen who hasn’t put the wiggly jingle last or second last and honestly thank you?? it’s a fucking BOP and james is so hyped, curt is so cute, angela is so feral, and kim is so beautiful i just love them 🥺
It’s just an excellent song??? It introduces everything relevant about Wiggly, the costumes are lovely, all the performers are just giving their BEST, it’s a complete feast from start to finish! I had such a hard time cutting parts because I wanted to shove everything in!
Jeff Blim’s voice is amazing and it would probably be really easy to voice crack with an amazing voice like that. But Jeff still controls it. That’s what I love about his voice🙂
hello yes i am in love w every starkid woman that is all thank you for listening
They’re all talented and good!
@@GoodMorningButch also like,,, ur highkey rly cool and id highkey wanna b buddies if you're down but i have no idea where id message you uno so i jus b saying it here
I’m musicalsandfluff on tumblr :)
I relate
If I didn’t already like girls I swear to god this musical would’ve turned me gay I just,,,, the vocals
Headcanon: Hannah was looking at her hands in What If Tomorrow Comes because Webby was crawling across them
THANK GOD WE LOVE A BECKY STAN. AND THE CURT LOVE DURING WIGGLE JINGLE. HIS POINTS ARE SO CUTE. OP UR TASTE IS GOD TIER
curts ensemble fella is my favorite minor character go OFF unhinged blue collar man
I honestly fucking love his character!!! I feel like almost every worker of the world realizes the injustices of capitalism even when they’re not able to put words on it or don’t realize that this isn’t just their personal woes but the whole damn system. He really really captures that life experience and that class of individuals!
And YEAH, Becky went way harder as a character than anything they’ve ever done in the past. Like, remember when we thought Emma had a sad backstory???
JEFF BLIMS SQUEAK WHEN SHE SAID “i missed you” ME TOO HUN ME TOO WHY DO I LOVE THEM ALL SO MUCH
What you said about Kim in Wiggly Jingle is so true, I’ve had that part of the song in my head since the show came out
Actually everything you said is true and I love this show so much
21:41 never seen anyone, let alone the goofy and lovable Joey Richter, that angry looking whilst singing. Huge amount of talent.
This is the tom content I go online to see
I love him SO MUCH even though I have zero experiences in common with him, I see him and my heart vibrates and I jive with him hard, he is ME.
@@GoodMorningButch DUDE I feel the *exact* same way!
the video i've been waiting for since bf premiered haha
edit: can i just say i love the titles you gave for corey's short songs, he's truly a king
my god you’re so fast!!! thank you so much
In this house we Stan Corey Dorris
I will stan Angela, Lex Foster and Californ M.I.A til I die because mood
And then i remember why im sad i relate to Lex when i hear Black Friday (aka the song with lyrics im prolly getting tatted or "the universe is infinite and its definite..."
I literally forgot what this video was multiple times bc I was so into the music
The music is soooooo good
When you're made in aMURICAAAAA
do you ever think about mcnamara's pained but resolute expression interacting with wiley and how wiley was likely the mentor he mentioned that swore loyalty to wiggley and then vanished (wiley being human in the b&w instead of a sniggle or something else, the name wilbur is similar to wiley, "i was a colonel once") and how it probably represents that sometimes you have to stand against the people you care about because anyone can be corrupted and even though you care about them you have to go against everything they believe in order to do what's right, which often leads to estrangement from those loved ones bc i do. a lot.
Ok but you had no right (ABSOLUTELY NONE) to make me realize Tim died alone IN A CAR without his dad
I mean, Kendall was playing Hannah for the last scene, so Tim couldn't be there - but I'm sure if they weren't the same actor, that Tim would've been there.
yeah that broke me, i hadn’t considered that reality and now i will never recover
I think it’s funny that both (one of) the last song(s) and the first song on your ranking is a Becky/Tom duet
They scare me when they’re under Wiggly’s influence :(
"my lesbian ranking" the ONLY opinion I care abt is a lesbian's opinion
We're a minority so I make it my business to fill the niche, even though at the end of the day I can only speak for one lesbian aka myself!
The way Jaime’s headband Pom Pom’s bounce after her line in the jingle I can’t so adorable
When I saw Black Friday live Joey actually sang the chorus of made in America in his falsetto
Yeah I heard it in the digital ticket! But since the youtube version is what they actually wanted out in the world I try not to be ungrateful about what I kinda liked better in earlier shows.
We finally have a kid starkid-
That Creme Brûlée lyric doesn’t sound like much until you find out one of the main ingredients in a Creme Brûlée is fire.
after rewatching the show i can’t get over the fact that wiggly “preys on your deepest wants” and becky is there because a child patient (likely if not explicitly stated to be dying) only wants a wiggly
1:08 And here we see Dylan turn into Betelgeuse
On a different note I appreciate the amount of commentary in here; I'm less obligated to disagree with rankings because you obviously understand and love all the songs which is really fun to see.
"IN TIME TO LOVE YOU" LIKE UGH SIR, YOU ARE PERFECTION AND IF YOUR VOICE WAS A PERSON I WOULD GLADLY LET IT STAB ME IN THE THROAT, BUT IF YOU WANT TO YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME
malyee YESS!!
dang i’ve watched a lot of black friday song rankings and this one really made me feel things i’m not sure if i agree with everything but dang your comments really made the impact of the songs come through dang
I'm glad that it at least had an impact! I'm not at all trying to claim that I have universal truth, this is just a reflection of my own enjoyment of the show and not at all objective.
Love that we all agreed as a fandom that Corey is a king
when Shermans choking Lex, i wish that were me
Angela said that the first week, Jaime was like actually choking her and I’m like, man do I wish that was my life. Mr Davidson was onto something.
Uh-
I'm so happy you put What do You Say in the top 5 cause I feel like everyone disregards that song but its so. good. I swear to god. play it at all my major life moments. I'm talking graduation, wedding, birth of child, funeral. All.
Your baby: *is born*
What Do You Say: THERE! SHE LOOKED AT HIS CROTCH! HE LOOKED AT HER BOOBS!
deck the halls of northville high has NO RIGHT to be as bopping as it is.
also am i the only one noticing how they faded into the studio version of feast or famine for the "squee squee" line?
Thank you for reminding me how gay Kim Whalen's voice makes me
I'm gonna preface this with the fact that I already put this in another rankings comments so if you already read it, I'm sorry.
I know that they probably all die at the end, but it just reassures me that tomorrow could come, and it could be better :)
this is the only valid black friday starkid ranking
your commentary is AMAZING and I say that as a lesbian (in love with Lauren but that's another thing) and a poor ass leftie lmao
I'm here this provide us lesbians with content in a sea of male obsessed fans 🙏🏻
GoodMorningButch Thank you, sometimes I’m astonished by the amount of heterosexually in the world.
i love this video so much your insights are so deep and meaningful and i almost entirely agree with your ranking anyways thank u for making it!!
(and when i noticed hannah vibing in the back of caliform.i.a. i IMMEDIATELY went oh shes stimming!!!! im so happy it wasnt just me!!)
Thank you so much! These videos really are an outlet for me to pour some of my analysis of these shows without it being like an essay or so^^
Finally someone who appreciates Jeff’s falsetto! It makes me so angry when people hate on him
My favourite thing about What If Tomorrow Comes? Is the image of Tim just sitting in Emma's car, just waiting patiently while all this dramatic shit goes down
So tim died alone in the car waiting for his dad :( cause like,,, nukes
I swear, the beginning of Califor M.I.A startles me everytime and I don't know why
her mom’s a BITCH!!!!!!!!
The King's exit ranked higher than his entrance
You really just HAD TO do that to me with the end of What if Tomorrow Comes?
29:50 IM NOT EVEN JOKING I LITERALLY STARTED CRYING AFTRR THAT JSXJJDJEJS HER VOICE IS THE LAST CONFORMATION I NEEDED TO KNOW IM BI DAMN
Dude the explanation for why "What if tomorrow comes" is exactly how I feel about it. It's a fantastic song, but it is emotionally exhausting to listen to
It’s stunning! One of Jeff’s best songs and the filming is extremely impressive, all in one shot, but I can’t handle it.
There is an unusual amount of songs in this musical that have Les Mis vibes (and what if tomorrow comes has an extra dash of Rent)
Every time Jeff is on screen in Black Friday, I can’t help but to notice how damn nice his hair is...
It really really is
Ok but it is tho
Something about the way Becky says the "my lovely girl" just really makes my hair stand on end. Helps that the "California" and "Sweetheart" at the beginning of the song both have tritones. Also this is my favorite singing I've ever seen Dylan do.
curt was living his best life and I love him so much
FINALLY SOMEONE IS GIVING THE ATTENTION CHARLOTTE/TED DESERVES!!! I'LL GO DOWN WITH THIS TRASHCAN OTP
It's a trash bag on fire and I will defend it with my life!!!
I DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE CHARLOTTE IN THE WHAT IF TOMORROW SONG THANK YOU FOR POINTING THIS OUT TRASHCAN SHIP I'M IN LOVE
THERE’S AN ALTERNATE REALITY where he’s not such a douchebag and loves his wife Charlotte and the teenage kid they adopted
When ever two people are singing into each other's faces reminds me of The Song That Goes Like This from Spamalot!
Edit: I had no idea Kim and Curt did a cover of that song!
Kim: sings in her amazing voice | The Lesbians™️: MA’AM ARE YOU AWARE I WOULD DIE FOR YOU-
