I saw this in 1977 as an 8 year old... I didn't really understand half the pranks then. Checking out old South Africa brings back memories. The old Wimpy! The lekker cars. Those safari suits, and everyone smoked!
Please note that there are two versions of this film: one featuring Jamie Uys as narrator (off and onscreen) and in both English and Afrikaans, and this one in English with new scenes for the international market. The local version is the funniest and was released to VHS in the 1980s: the DVD version which was available is the international version.
I was just about to comment on it. Got a bit annoyed as the original version is much funnier. Where can we get the original version on You Tube? Anybody knows?
different times, Netherlands here, most houses where neve locked, if they where, the key you found under the garbage can or door mat, this was even the case in Amsterdam, you could buy a so called 'loper' in the hardware store, it could open most front doors, going on holly days people just closed the curtains and often put a sign on the window, it was easy to play pranks on us, this days you would think twice,
i don't know how much was staged or how to identify what was staged, but the upside-down living room is for sure one of the greatest prank ideas ever conceived!
Great stuff , please try again, with modern day technology we can made more funnier video's together in South Africa if yourll dont mind and extra pair of hands and ideas. People need this in their lives and it's a great way of helping our fellow South Africans of coming together with a smile aswell as we can give some of them free objects or airtime when we have made a funny in their day and life. They might even have a great story they can tell there kids or even around the braai, fire or imboller, it's not just a video to some it's a highlight to there life ty mine. Thé singing man and the phone was my favourite. I laughed myself out of depression. Ohh God .😂😂😂😂 Why did y’all do Allan like that 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Thé News man made me fall of my chair . 😂😂😂😂
I think I saw Clive Scott (from TV's The Villagers, etc.) somewhere around there too. And then there is the little fellow from the TV's "Nommer Asseblief" who was supposedly as deaf as his sister, I can't remember the actor's name
I saw this in the Stelbio in Stellenbosch in '77 or '78. Had a good laugh then, but there are at least a few staged acts, among other with Clive Scott and Zach du Plessis. A few of the scenes would be politically and socially totally unacceptable these days. 😀
I remember a prankster movie from around this time with a scene where a young man in good health keeps shouting at his elderly mother who is carrying their two (supposedly) heavy suitcases over the road to the disapproval of passers-by. Was that another version of this movie?
There was never an Afrikaans soundtrack made for this. There were two versions, the local version with Jamie Uys presenting it onscreen and narrating (this version was about 60% Afrikaans) and the international version which was wholly English and narrated by Joe Stewardson.
The skit at 14:15 is staged, the guy that "steals" the steak is a well known actor in south africa, his name is Clive Scott. He later went on to play the character Ted Dixon in the Villagers, a fictional series set at a gold mine in joburg.
Are there parts of this that have been dubbed from English to Afrikaans? Seems strange that everyone would speak almost only English given the linguistic diversity of the country. Unless of course it’s all just staged with actors. Some of it certainly seems very much to be.
Darem byna halfeeu gelede se prent. Ander tye, ander waardes. Maar ja, Funny People was seker ou Jamie se swakste prent.

This is the foreign version of FUNNY PEOPLE: the local version was narrated by Jamie Uys and was not only bilingual but far funnier than this.

Well, one should expect that things that were politically acceptable 50 years ago would be different than that what happens to be acceptable today.
Remember this
All scripted... but one of the funniest movies of all time...
Classic !
