There was definitely racism(not all white South Africans were racist) and some segregation, slightly comparable to the lockdown regulations of covid. Which made the covid lockdowns and passes ironic. But for the most part, Apartheid was nothing like segregation in the US, the church would not allow that kind of brutality. The goal was separate development and education, similar to native Americans in reservations. The mistake was that there was no real effort to uplift blacks into the middle class, segregation never works, and money spent on these projects were not enough. Furthermore, South Africa's economy was on a decline due to sanctions. South Africa would have been a better place today, if they focused on free market principles that would have helped blacks out of poverty into the middle class. The only silver lining was that blacks had blue collar jobs and apprenticeship jobs. All in all, both apartheid and the new South African government did blacks and everyone else a disservice. There were better solutions to both problems.
Please, i don't mean this in bad faith, I know the internet is polarized and often pugnacious, but I think it may be better to ask 50 year old, 60 year old black people as opposed to using Leon Schuster's film as a socio-political reflection...rather the people who were there. They might agree and suggest it was kinda like Covid...or not. My aunt, who against all my begging, still votes ANC because "I'll never understand"
