as a soprano, can confirm, there's always that one annoying person that thinks hitting the highest note is more important than harmonizing with the rest.
Trumpets in band are the same, high notes are all that matter. I got shamed for not being able to hit a note a full octave higher than anything I'd had to play in concert band, what's the point of going that high when it just wears me out?
Mind you, having sung 2nd soprano in "the Christmas portion" of Handel's "Messiah" (which is usually the most famous part anyway), I can tell you that Handel himself set a precedent for all the sopranos out there. Trust me, even us mezzos get some seriously show-off parts in that particular work, especially where the famous/infamous "Hallelujah Chorus" is concerned. He didn't make the alto parts nearly as interesting. He seemed to focus quite a bit on the sopranos and tenors (opening tenor recitative and aria, anyone?) with merely a gentleman's nod or two to the basses and baritones. 😜🤣

As a choir’s soprano, I had to make up for all the tone deafs and show off sopranos by arranging my voice to fit just right so that everything sorta blended together. I didn’t have the show off sopranos’ awaited spotlight and recognition but one day, I couldn’t attend our choir class for some reason, and someone told me afterwards that my voice was really missing that day and that the sopranos’ section felt incoherent without me. I felt really proud of myself for doing a good job at the choir. Ironically the show off sopranos never got any compliments, so it was kind of a humility lesson.
I used to have the same kind of thing happen to me for choir pieces at the music academy. I'm good at hearing the notes in my head, so the teacher would have me do the most 'basic' of the soprano notes so everybody else could orient themselves by me if they lost it (though we didn't really have show-offs, we were just kids). I mean... important job, sure, and I know I just never had the voice control of the girl that always got to be the head soprano. But everyone likes to get five minutes in the spotlight, right? I wish I had had one chance, just for a less important one.

Too many altos is almost a joke to me. Our sopranos outnumber our altos by a long shot. About 5-6 altos to 10+ sopranos, in my high school choir. About 8 baritones (we only do SAB, typically only even SB) Almost all of our altos could be a mezzo soprano, but we need what we can get. I’m sure a few of the sopranos could be altos but considering how they all sulk when told that they don’t get to all do the descant, I don’t think they could handle being an alto. They want the part that’s fun to sing and sounds nice, not the boring part that hangs out at the bottom. TLDR, our sopranos want to have their moment, 24/7, and all want to be the high note. There are too many of them for that nonsense.
@@alteregobruh We had so many altos it was crazy. Since the time the comment was made a few have left the choir or had to be moved around so it sounds more balanced (and so you can hear the sopranos).
