Been waiting for this video!!!! This confirms my need for patience for the next generation of handhelds. Once the PS2/GC is playable at 80% or higher then ill consider buying one.
This is the video I was looking for. Straight to the point. These consoles are still far from perfect. The budget constraints fight against the full potential. I will pay $500 for Anbernic to get it right and give us the full GC,PS2,PSP,Dream Cast experience.
They already have those at the $500 price point and even a bit cheaper. Anbernic even has a couple including a windows handheld than there’s obviously many other handhelds out there including the most obvious in that price range the Steam Deck. At this price point it’s still a ways away but you say you’re willing to pay $500. Just curious why not get one of those?
@@TheAwesomeness1123 Since they aren't answering, I'm personally holding off for a metal, pocketable PS2 device. I have a steam deck, and that runs PS2 flawlessly, but it doesn't have that ambernic metal build quality, and I can't stick it in my pocket. If they came out with something the same form factor as the 405M, made out of metal, and high quality, I'd definitely drop $500.
I need to keep telling myself to be patient and wait a little longer. One day we'll definitely get a small and portable PS2 capable device 😤 i have the Odin but i cant bring that everywhere

Very well organized video. However I will note, Katamari Damacy is only smooth for first 2-3 levels, after that it has major slow downs as it zooms out and world gets bigger.
I appreciate these vids man. Seeing review say if something can run 'some games' from a console leaves a lot for interpretation. These vids help give you a better understanding on what 'some games' means.
Thanks so much for trying out Champions of Norrath. It was very taxing back in the PS2 so I imagined it would be very hard to emulate. I guess it will be a good marker for you in the future to see how much stronger the computing power of these handhelds gets.
Never played Champions of Norrath before. Seems like it's one of those games that are difficult to emulate then! Thanks for the suggestion, may as well use the game as a benchmark for future tests. Usually I use the God of War series as a benchmark
You should try this console with Gamma Os, the installing process seams easy, and the results are astonishing. I've seen in a RUclips video, somebody with this model and that os running gow well

"Patience Needed" can be tweaked by enabling frame skip and audio sync in settings so it still as smooth as playable but music or sfx doesn't messed up, but "Don't bother" means doesn't matter what you do, the game is unplayable.
I found a few games that performs better on the RP3+, such as Dragon Quest VIII. But I think MGS 3 Snake Eater performs better on the RG405M. Not sure why though!
Possibly! I usually would test a couple of games again and see if any mod/firmware updates make it much better. But I only turn it into a video if the performance is significantly better
Anbernic should really test making those inline triggers shallow analog ones. Can't wait until they release something like this with just a little more power this power level is so close to perfect for what I need

It was definitely the case of using the wrong cover 😂. But, the Simpsons : Road Rage are usually much easier to emulate, so I assume it's at least playable
Not sure how Retroid Pocket 3+ (RP3+) enjoyers are sleeping on this console with the same SoC chipset but with a taller screen (in a smaller body and same if not better battery life) being better for the majority of games this chipset is best at (including up to PS2). The only place where this screen suffers out of the box is PSP where the RP3+ suffers out of the box in NES, SNES, GBC, GBA, DS, Genesis/MegaDrive, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2 and GameCube. Yes not all of the newer systems on that list play well on the chipset, but excluding those even then the massive majority lies with the RG405M's 4:3 screen. But what we need ideally as per Retro Game Corp's tests is the Gameboy's 3:2 aspect ratio screen to strike the perfect balance, but that would make more sense when we have an chipset for Wii, Wii U, X360 and PS3.
Great point! Although I would say that PSP on the RG405M feels terrible with that aspect ratio and there's not much we can do about it, whilst PS1/PS2 on the RP3+ is still great and you can change it to the original aspect ratio if needed
So torn bt this and the rp3+. That metal shell is just sexy. Coming from a 35xx, so itll be a nice upgrade how ever i go. Just got into these devices 3 weeks ago and im already hooked lol
They are pretty similar in performance, I think aspect ratio is one of the things you should keep in mind as well, the RP3+ can still play games at 4:3 ratio due to its screen size. Whilst the RG405M is not great when playing 16:9 games. So depends on your needs!
I was just gifted this 405m for my bday but I only have 11 ps2 games not 50. Did you add games yourself? How am I able to put games like nba street vol1 or Nintendo games like Mario I’m shocked there are no Mario games at all on my 405m any suggestions on how I’m able to add games ? I've been considering getting the 405 /w the 256 card .... I've seen some videos where you can download your own choice of games that being said can you possibly download some of the worse running games to try to get a better copy than comes on the card ? Knowing that the RG405M struggles with many PS2 games (although a few are playable), does this handheld capable of playing *all/most* PS1 games smoothly? or are there also PS1 games that are too resource insensitive for it ?
I tweaked a couple of settings for each game to find the best performance. Not much of a difference, but the settings for each game is on the compatibility list!
I have played many ps2 games and they all play 100% perfectly. Every game should play perfectly on this you only need a couple different settings on each game. Different games sometimes require a different setting to play.
@@monospacechannel that definitely is a big one but you can also mess around with certain graphics settings as well. I’m just hoping they get software so people won’t need to do that anymore.
Yeah sometimes changing roms might do the trick! Turning on or off the Multi-threaded VU1 settings sometimes makes for a significant performance boost too
Barnyard isn't a demanding game, the rg405m should've handled it easily. I played Barnyard on ps2 years ago. I'm still considering the rg405m even though I still have my ps2 and 350+ games for it. Scarface is damn good game and the punisher is pretty good. Katamari damacy is a good game and isn't demanding. Kingdom hearts 2 is better than the first. I still have dragon quest viii on ps2 and 3ds. Tales of abyss and legendia are great games and are part of my collection. Bully the scholarship edition on wii would've been better. Somehow I doubt the godfather the blackhand edition for wii would be playable on the rg405m.
Yeah I was pretty surprised that Barnyard is nowhere near playable! Not sure why. And I would say the best way to play PS2 games for now is still on your PS2. The emulation performance of these handhelds are pretty much a hit or miss
Its a mixed bag with GC & PS2 ,just not quite powerful enough,nearly getting there with those 2 classic consoles ,but i think there needs a bigger processor T618 is getting old

If I recall it well, it was on full FPS without any drops during the test. But I get you, these old games often do feel slower than what we remember them to be, while in truth it might just be our perception!

It's unfortunate, the cutscene and the battles are definitely playable. I guess the depth of field during exploration is too much to handle for now!

Usually the GC performs much better than the PS2 version, but haven't tested it yet!

DW 4 was my first Dynasty Warriors and it truly had a great impression, never missed a DW game since! (minus when it becomes somewhat open-world lol)

Download roms or rip the roms from your legally owned discs and place them into the folder for that system on your device.
Ps2 had so many gems. Also the bully port on vita is incredible

Are the emulator settings adjusted for FPS optimization, or are they adjusted more for performance?
I try to adjust the settings to make it as smooth as playing in the PS2 as possible

Looks like it's not fully smooth yet, but try tweaking the cycle skip, cycle rate, and disabling multi-thread settings
