I'm so thrilled that Journey to Silius was so high on the list. The entire soundtrack to that game is incredible. I still can't believe Sunsoft lost the Terminator license for such an awesome game.
This music is inspirational and timeless. What a treasure.
This? Or these? Or wait. You might be right. All of nes songs are one, united, timeless 👑
your comment is inspirational and timeless. what a treasure.
@@yabo_san your comment about his comment about the nes music is inspirational and timeless. What? A treasure?
The NES will always be my favorite console of all time!
Super nes is pretty fucking awesome too!
MORJDK I remember when it first came out. Kids would ask each other if they had a Nintendo. Some would say, "Yeah! I have both! Super, and regular Nintendo!"
Christopher LaRock Mine too
8-bit Pixel maybe let others enjoy what they want?
The nes is number two for me behind the Genesis. It was the golden era of gaming.
10:57 PICTIONARY (since nobody else time-stamped it in the comments)
Tim Follin was the ultimate master of the RP2A03. No one else could get an NES to sound like this.
I'm listening to this in the background while I am working. Pictionary's music came on and I had to switch over to find out what it was from! Pictionary!? Really!? DANG!! It sounds awesome!
Blown away moment 1: Couldn't believe those sounds came from an NES!!!
Blown away moment 2: Pictionary!?
@@f.k.b.16 I know!! A WORD GAME!! sounds more TMNT-esque!
You sir, are a hero
57:10 my favorite by him
came here for songs, came back with so much knowledge of games
This was a great list. I'm glad there's so much variety. Most lists like this are filled with the most well-known tracks that everyone's heard a million times before, usually from only a handful of popular games. The NES library has so much more to offer.
Thanks!
As a musician, I have never ceased to be amazed at the incredible feats of composition produced by these artists in the 80's and early 90's, especially considering with how limited their production tools were back then compared with what's available to us nowadays. It might just be my nostalgia, but to me 8bit synthesizers still seem to produce more stirring soundtracks than your average orchestral arrangements.
I said almost the same to wife yesterday while listening to the Castlevania NES trilogy OST. It is truely amazing what they did with the simple tools they had
Wow in just sitting here leisurely listening to the tunes and this one bad ass track come on. I would never have thought in a million years. pictionary could be so badass
There is seriously no reason for the pictionary song to be that good.
Right?
Shub Negroroth I just came here to say that same shit hahaha that shit went hard!!!
# 58: 0:10:58 Just listened through to hear it myself. Such awesome.
@@DaDestroya The moment I looked up Tim Follin's name, I remembered where else I've heard his music. He did the OST for Solstice and and Silver Surfer, which had awesome soundtracks.
@@chiptunist it's like he did not give a fuck about the game, just the music
Oh wow, you acually included Shatterhand. That game is criminally underrated, both the game and music. Also, no NES music list would be complete without some good old Tim Follin tunes.
Everyone's talking about the Pictionary song while I'm amazed how good the Silver Surfer song is
Best part is it's the same guy who made both (though his brother helped with the SS song, so that may be what gave it the extra creative push).
Yes! Thank you! I was about to post the same thing. Pictionary slaps, but wow, SS was just on a whole other level, especially for such an obscure game
@@musicdev If you thought that was good, check out the title theme of Solstice
@@8squared007 that was amazing, some more Tim Follin magic is always appreciated
@@musicdev The soundtrack to Plok, and really, Plok in general, is really good as well.
I'm just happy the Wily Stage 1 theme made the top 5, favorite level music ever.
Ninja Gaiden 28:45 Blaster Master 53:55 and Silver Surfer 1:02:21 definitely go the hardest.
Missing greats: CHEETAHMEN, Kirby's Adventure - Green Fields, Nazo no Murasamejo, FF3 Overworld, FF2 Rebel Army, FF1 Undersea Shrine and Gurgu Volcano (if that rule was broken), and Dynowarz.
There aren't many things I love more than a good NES tune
OMG shawdow gate just hearing the music gives me chills
Check out the song 1980 by Herb Alpert - it's very similar to the Shadowgate song.
Best part at 36:33...Italy 11-England 3, after great saves 😂
Wow, this is an incredible list with some really obscure gems in it! Magic of Scheherazade and Conquest of the Crystal Palace were awesome touches.
Thanks!
I'm glad a Rygar tune was in there, that soundtrack was awesome.
Not too many know about Journey to Silius Stage 2. One of the greatest tracks ever produced in any genre.
I need to beat stage 1 first. 💀
Before clicking this I was like "Man, no one played Journey to Silius and missed out on one of the best songs ever." and here you have it as #2. Good job man! I agree!
that Shadowgate music! expresses such a perfect combination of adventure and fear
This was playing in the background. A lot of these I've never heard, but a few transported me straight back to my late 80s childhood.
Shadowgate, the most terrifying and difficult game I ever played as a kid. It had me on the edge of my seat for the entire time, and now that Steam is putting up a remake of it with many new things and great renditions of the old school areas... oh man
Then you will love the new sequel! Beyond Shadowgate! It's on kickstarter now and there is a free demo so you can try it out for yourself!!
How did Pictionary get such an amazing track??
***** The dude AKA Tim Follin is a beast, check out the tracks to Silver Surfer and Solstice!
Absolute banger. How the hell?
When you're one of the Follin brothers, you can make an amazing soundtrack like that.
Tim Follin
They had Tim Follin do the soundtrack. That's how lol
1:04:44 omg ..i still have that Batman game in perfect condition and other games as well but Batman was/is my fav and so is the song .
HeavenlyDemon i liked the game and soundtrack too
Just hearing the music reminds me it was a tough level but i'm not sure which one. Anyway it was a brutal game from the 90's, both in difficulty and awesomeness of music
They were all good tracks, the Game over theme was awesome too.
One of the best games on the NES, challenging but not cheap like ma y other games of the era. When you died it wasn't "oh come on" it was "shit, I messed up"
I still haven't beaten the Joker, guy's almost impossible.
Can we all respect how funny the animations for Nintendo World Cup are xD Still love that game
Thanks for clarification on that one. I know I messed up on some of the composers, unfortunately. It was sometimes difficult to find a reliable source, and also some mix ups between the actual music composer and the "audio programmer" etc. I hope nobody is holding a grudge...
this carried me through countless night shifts
I love how the intro to Solstice sets you up for a huge jolt when the arpeggios start flying!
Garrison Panyan It's a fine intro to the song, indeed.
@@KristianEmanuelsen Fine?? It's demential
@@Plasmariel Sure, but I like the part from 58:20 and to the end of the song, just as much.
@@KristianEmanuelsen Absolutely. Oh man it's sad but I noticed the square channels are way too quiet
@@Plasmariel Okay, but whatever you do, don't listen to this video with mobile phone speakers, unfortunately it sounds awful that way.
Since no-one else seems to be doing it...

its amazing how much good music the nes has when its almost beeps and boops how limited the nes hardware was.
Man, I miss the day when I would play Nes game with my brother, and sometimes my sister.
Me too, and playing NES games with my brother, two of my cousins, and friends.
Great top of músic for nes (my favorite console of Nintendo)
08:45 and 27:40 - And this is why I watch such lists. As an aspiring video game soundtrack composer I like really good obscure tracks.
Yeah, Ninja Gaiden! #43's my jam!!
I've seen so many different names for this song though, here its "Master Ninja Theme" but I've also heard "Ryu's Theme", "Ryu's Determination", "Unbreakable Determination", and lastly (and I'm not making this up) "Basilisk Mine Field".
Awesome song it is! The real name must be "Basilisk Mine Field" then.
I know right? And yeah, that name comes completely from left field. I've played the game and can safely say there are no fields filled with pressure-sensitive explosives and mythical lizards that kill by looking at you ;P
Exactly =D Would have been kind of cool though.
absolutely true, #43 the best ever
The is still a hole in the wall in my old bedroom at my parents house thanks to those bastard eagles in Ninja Gaiden. However, some of my favourite ever video game music is in that game. Awesome! =)
When he drops Punch Out, Mario 2, and then Ghosts n Goblins at 33, 32, 31 ... you know the top 10 is going to blow your nob off.
Yeah, good memories indeed. The NES sure has some awesome games and great soundtracks! Hard 2D 8-bit and 16-bit games with good and responsive controls are still nice to play every once in a while.
Shadowgate is often overlooked, and has some great music. Props for giving this text-based adventure its due.
Thanks for the compilation! I like how you gave some love to Bucky O'Hare and Shadowgate. But I'm pretty surprised that you didn't include anything from Snake Rattle 'n' Roll or Kirby's Adventure. Those games have some seriously awesome soundtracks, I'd highly recommend them if you haven't heard them already.
Thanks! The Kirby's Adventure music is very good. Snake Rattle 'n Roll - have to say it's one of my least favorite NES soundtracks from David Wise (I very much like Wizards & Warriors 1 & 2, ANoES, Battletoads etc. though). Very standard blues boogie inspired soundtrack (level 2 music is almost cringeworthy in that regard, with super standard blues boogie including some timing errors etc. imho).
I was just thinking that too. Kirby Adventure was one of the best OST, and the Guardian Legend was one of the best games no one played
You gave me a bit of inspiration today! lol. I've sampled from a few of these!!! Nothing like the old school NES sounds!
Why is the Pictionary Theme so rocking? Hell yes!
lmao That was literally my same reaction.
Indeed, sounds much better suited for some sort of bad ass side scroller or something.
At least, Scrabble.
The Follin family is not human, they are magical multi-dimensional beings that decided to grace the Earth with their presence. Praise them.

Nothing draws me into a game more than good music. Like the NIER games. Music from heaven. #1 is Zelda.. My moms name.... Kids never believed me.
Appreciate all the work that went into making this. It's a nice list! Misses some of my favourites like Kirby and Gauntlet, though :(
Thanks! Agree that I should have put the Gauntlet song in.
Palin nAtini
Starting off with the best track from Contra Force = instant like 😋
NES Era the best era ever made in the history of gaming . I wish that this era would come back just for one day ...
nostalgia, exactly why my NES is 100% functional maintained and ready for me whenever I need a getaway.
One day isn't enough time to appreciate all the work put into games back then. I'm glad I'm old enough to remember how good it used to be.
There have been TONS of NES style 8-bit styled games being made. You have been seriously missing out if you didn't know about any of them.
just a few of them are actually great though
NINJA GAIDEN 2 ALL SONGS.
DOUBLE DRAGON ALL SONGS
BATMAN ALL SONG
SILVER SURFER
ARE BEST COMPOSITIONS
#42 29:32 One really obscure NES game there. Thank you for the reminder.
Great list! Really enjoyed it.
Thanks, nice channel!
I'm like 9 years too late, but your taste here is incredibly in tune with mine...this is an excellent list.
We were so fucking spoiled with NES music, as kids we had no idea how amazing these bangers were.
Thanks for posting this, it's awesome to listen to while doing schoolwork :)
Came here looking for some sweet tunes that I missed back in the day. I found a lot of new favorites. I also came with #1 in mind, and sure enough, it was #1. I mean it's hard to argue against it, it's just so... man, well, you all know. I loved how they showed you all the items, because as a 7 year old without guides or anything I never found half of them. Now I can beat it in 3 hours with every item on my computer, but I miss the good old days when I'd play for hours, get to maybe level 3, and then it would all erase and I'd always have to deal with the flashing screen. That god damn flashing screen. "Ok I think I remember where some stuff was, let's do it again"
Thanks! Good old Zelda memories.
Its not a good playlist. Its an AWESOME Playlist man !
Thanks man!!
Goonies II must be on the top 10!
this reminds me how silly these enemies were..just walking back and forth aimlessly..just being evil.. good times :D
Yup
nostalgia is very personal, the guy who did the video has his reasons for this top 70 and its ok... we can all do our own top 70, and nobody has a best top 70. thank you.
Shadowgate! Ah... the nostalgia...
Absolute bangers in this list
On my second listen. This list is amazing. Only gems in here! My favourites aren't here but that's okay, I really love all the choices you made
I loved Maniac Mansion but never cared about the "Dave Theme". Now.. Decades later.. I get goosebumps. The Power of the mighty NES!

11 years later, I am still listening. 😎👍
Pictionary has no right to have that cool a song.
Pretty much any soundtrack Tim Follin touched was gold. Even if the game was total shit XD
Brooooooooooooo why is this song so good!! hahahhaah i love it!! wtf?
Try PGA TOUR GOLF For the SNES or Genesis - opening theme - for the same effect.
Dear god, that was literally what I scrolled down to comment. That song is ridiculously badass! And it's Pictionary! That should have been saved for Contra 5: The Mega Man Final Fantasy Trials of Castlevania.

Amazing!!
My list to be included
Tom and Jerry
Rollergames
Gauntlet
TMNT3
Batman - Return of the Joker
TOP GUN 2
Dragon Spirit
Great compilation! Happy you have SIlver Surfer in the top ten, the music in that game kicks ass (I also think th game is awesome)
Alesiopdv Thanks! The game is good, but hard and hurts my thumb a bit, good mashing practice though.
This almost make me cry because I remembered a lot of things... Thanks OP.
You're welcome. Thanks!
Number 43 at 0:28:45 is one of my favorites XD It should be higher on this list and especially higher than the other ninja gaiden songs x) But thats just my opinion. Also, if famicom was in this competition, I'd bet the fire emblem them would be up there pretty high lol
It's great, and should have been a little higher, around 25-30. But in Ninja Gaiden music it's number 2 for me, Overdrive is number 1 :)
***** oh Overdrive XD Yah I like that one a lot too but not as much probably because I HATED that level! DARN WIND WAS MORE ANNOYING THAN BIRDS! I mean Birds you can deal with when you get really good BUT WIND HO NO! WE GOTTA CHAAAAAAAANGE DIRECTIONS EVERY WHICH WAY RANDOMLY AND MAKE YOU DIE OR WAIT 5 HOURS FOR IT TO CHANGE >:O lol Gosh I need 4-2 "Unbreakable determination" playing to make me keep on going to beat that one XD lol
Jim Vaughan Lol, to be fair, Unbreakable Determination/Master Ninja Theme has more of a Ninja sound to it than Overdrive though. Overdrive is more of a really cool rock song in my ears. Here is the classic Unbreakable Determination in all its extended glory: Ninja Gaiden - Unbreakable Determination (4-2 stage music) (extended)
god im drunk right now and dont remember writing or talking this message much less writing it so profesionally with grammer and shit. well fuck it
@@KristianEmanuelsen If the rule didn't have a one theme per title maximum, honestly, Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2, plus Contra, Super Contra and all three Castlevanias could have taken up like half the spots. The music in those games are legit.
So glad to see Nintendo World Cup on this! That game has a killer soundtrack, and that song brings back the most fondest of memories.
Thanks! It's a very good OST. Btw here's a guitarist, Nestalgica, playing an electric guitar cover of the VS theme (the standout tack for me) ruclips.net/video/cYkZueTJoZ4/видео.html with an acoustic guitar ending. Nice, a proper tune.
omg so happy to read here I'm not the only one who's insanely rockin' out to the Pictionary tune.
Simply great compilation of NES music. I can't point any song that shouldn't be there. Good job Kristian!
Thanks Pixelman007! Appreciated.
great job, man. I used this list to cook and organize the garage. no need to skip any of the tracks.
It’s crazy how well that sample channel on the NES was used for late era NES games
Thanks, man! great selection! I would like to see here robocop 3, alien 3, Jurassic park and battletoads and double dragon
Thanks man, good shouts! Jeroen Tel should have had one in my list; the Robocop 3 (especially) and Alien 3 theme songs are great. Double Dragon is at 37 though.
Don't care about the list and ranking but dude you gave me childhood back! Ahh Gawd, Our Generation Rocks!
Thanks! The lucky generation indeed.
Thank god Kraid's Lair showed up, I'm a little buzzed right now but I was about to be legitimately angry lol
fafillionaire Great list by the way ... Only things missing in my opinion are Blaster Master stage 4, Crystalis final battle, NES world cup final match, and a Guardian Legend track(Underwater corridor, field mini boss)
I can’t be the only one who regularly listens to this when I’m getting ready for work or driving

Essa era foi muito forte principalmente na trilha sonora.

Why is this song such a bop!
These are excellent selections and reveal a very comprehensive knowledge of the console's library. Best NES music vid I've encountered.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
A list of epicNESs! Thanks.
Lots of thankfulNESs!
I just stumbled in here and I'm glad I did :)
Wolverine deserves a spot on this list somewhere, as does G.I. Joe: The Atlantis Factor
It's just his opinion
Really brought tears to my eyes... inmediately went to my psp NES emulator... thank you for the golden child memories bro
Thanks bro, I appreciate it!
Great choice :) I'm probably gonna get myself a NES mobile ringtone as well soon.
I've listened to a fuck ton of nes playlists on RUclips, and I gotta say this is my favorite one by far. Excellent choices!
The Solstice theme is very fucking awesome o_o
Why is there so many good games I've never seen?
I like this list but I feel some of these songs got on based off their reputation alone. Like Super Mario at 5 and LoZ at 1 is understandable but Warriors & Wizards Title Screen and Castlevania II's: Bloody Tears should have been at least top 10. You could listen to those and they'll be stuck in your head forever. Unlike Mario's theme because it's just so common. Very glad the Batman Streets of Desolation got in there.
Thanks, good feedback. I agree that Bloody Tears should have been a little higher, top 10. W&Ws Title tune is an old composition, not truly an original song. I would have pushed up CII a little and moved Journey to Silius down to 5th or 6th now.
***** Ohhh I did not know that about the W&W! O.o
You have certainly brought back some way back memories with this list. Thanks a lot!
Nice to see Xexyz get some love, it's such a great game.
holy fuck that merl forest tune..
If we're talking about Faxanadu, I think the music that plays during the foggy/misty areas deserves a spot. An ominous GmMaj7 arpeggio (a.k.a. the "mystery" chord) ties up both square wave channels with its faux reverb while the triangle wave channel mimics a recorder playing a happy melody softly in the distance in an entirely different key (D major). It sets the scene so perfectly: it combines a sense of dread for all the things you can't see with the coziness of a foggy morning. I don't think there's another song in the NES library that nails the mood it sets out to achieve so well.
Good argument, and I love it when videogame songs (and sound effects) capture the mood like that and adds to the atmosphere. Something about it even resembles the masterful 5-3 of Demon's Souls (2009) a little to me: ruclips.net/video/27bjwRN3R78/видео.html
Why hasn't anyone ever informed me that Pictionary has probably the best music on the NES?
WHY!?!?!?!?
+BuFFoTheArtClown The music was totally rad, but the game sucked. Similar to all of the games that Tim Follin composed for, his music was unrivaled but his best and most iconic tunes appeared in the worst of games.
Solstice and Plok were alright games though
Solid picks man. I feel like a lot of people go based on how popular the game is but you have a good ear for good music
Thanks!
#2 is #1.
+kusi ripuli If #2 was stage 3, then it could be #1
I was getting nervous that Journey to Silius wasn't gonna make the list. I was pleasantly surprised. :)
Only thing I would have added was Gravity Man from Megaman 5.
Or Napalm man or Proto Fortress
@@muxilava big time! Those are both amazing tunes
Or battletoads
At 1:10:16 I had to pause and read upside down to see the lowest text. Good thing I paid attention to the effect you used so I'd realize I could read it during the effect, haha
Feel tired and pressured growing up.... And unhappy...

Miss the old days. Life is getting boring
Congratulations my son today you are a man! I know i'd trade it all back for a big old crt tv a Nintendo and plenty of cereal and the ability to tolerate milk again.
Hey brother, can I use this quote in my book? I'm writing a book for teens about how adult life is bullshit. Please respond, I'm 100% serious
try meditation:)
This might be the best collection of NES music I've heard on RUclips. No list is perfect of course since there is no such thing but there is a very thoughtful and varied collection of stuff here. I turn this on listen to it during my work day sometimes. Powers me right through the day, thanks for the hard work that went into this! Great job!
Thanks!!! So much good NES music to choose from.
Do you have Jehovah God in your life?
Great list. Many of my favorites were in it. Rygar, love that shit.
Dude no one ever knows what I am talking about when I mention Rygar.
This is the best list I've seen on RUclips so far. Only complaints are no River City Ransom (Runnin' Around) and Ninja Gaiden being too low, haha. Great job! I listen to this all the time at work.
Thanks, I appreciate your feedback! Yes, Ninja Gaiden is a little too low, and River City Ransom has a very good OST. There are many good OST's missing, Darkwing Duck etc.
