The Castlevania series has been heralded for its music since its first appearance on the NES. These games helped redefine what was possible for 8-bit music composition, giving players exquisite melodies which evoked feelings of adventure, mystery, and fear. Every Castlevania game since these beginnings has featured a incredible soundtrack, but while games like Symphony of the Night and Lords of Shadow are quite musically impressive, we here at According to Science wanted to give a special shoutout to the era that started it all. That's right - for this list we focused solely on Castlevania installments which appeared on the NES and Gameboy systems. This resulted in a smaller pool of songs than we're used to, but we're confident that longtime fans and newcomers alike will discover some new favorites. - Игры
For me, alongside Final Fantasy, the Castlevania series is the gold standard when it comes to video game musical composition.
You should give Legacy of the Wizard soundtrack a listen, very unknown, but so good.
English Lessons with Alex (engVid AlexESLvid) AGREED 100% ...castlevania & FF..especially FF 5,6,7..best video game ost's

Video #3 is in the bag! We had to take on a less ambitious project after killing ourselves over N64. But video #4 is already well underway, and may end up being our biggest project yet!
Please like, sub, and comment if you like what you see and hear; we are very appreciative of the support! We don't post often, but we have many more videos planned for the future. ;)
AccordingToSCIENCE Love the work on this video, this was especially helpful in regards to the GameBoy pieces, a relatively unexplored area for me. Can't wait for more!
AccordingToSCIENCE Are you absolutely certain you didn't have nostalgia bias for Castlevania III while creating this?

Bloody Tears is the best. I don't care if it's 30 seconds or not.

Oh my god, you guys helped me find one of the songs I have trying to find for a long time: Stalker. Thank you soooooo much! This music is of my childhood games & I have always loved the 8-bit masterpieces of Castlevania & other games!
Man, that Shovel Knight composer sure had influences here. Love that, and love this, too.
Only came for bloody tears

Fantastic collage. And 100% agreed on the #1 :)
yes, just yes!! all of this!! holy christ my favorite game installments ever!!! no game will ever beat old school Castlevania, hands down!!
Bloody Tears in 4th, buy your torch and pitchfork here!
New messiah is my favorite one of all Castlevania franchise and it's so underrated because of its platform.
true it's so good
5.Mad Forest
4.Wicked Child
3.Aquarius
2.Dwelling of Doom
1.Vampire Killer/Deja vu

Top 25 16 bit castlevania songs?
Six of mine: Stalking, Heart of Fire, Vampire Killers, Bloody Tears, Wicked Child and Beginning! They are viva forever…This gene of this kind of this music is unmixable! You can hear and recognise it among thousand of other sounds, not only Castlevania but also other games like Tecmo Ninja, Koei, Double Dragons…^^
Surprised to see New Messiah at the bottom of the list. And really, no Battle of the Holy. That's one of my favorite 8 bit tunes.
I was so hyped starting #8 and above slowly eliminating melodies and foreseeing my favourite 8-bit Castlevania track - Beginning at the top of the chart! All melodies are great though!
FUCK YES MAD FOREST. So underrated, just like the rest of Castlevania 3. My favorite Castlevania, such a damn shame it doesn't get more attention. So glad it got the top two spots, it deserves it completely. What a godlike soundtrack.
Personally though, I would've put The Silence of Daylight higher, and included Demon Seed from Castlevania 3. Just my opinion though.
Found a new one I love: Praying Hands, #19. That intro is fantastic. 9:47
Wicked Child is Number 1 for me!
I agree whole heartedly with this list. Well done.
#4 is the one I remember from my childhood... will never forget that song lol
Was expecting to hear the C3 credit roll song right after #20 stops. The beat at 37:37 is so good
I played this game for 3 days straight. when I was a little child. I loved it.
That password music from Simon's Quest though! Still sends chills down my spine.. lol
The Bloody Tears fakeout aged very well lol
Wow, I never listened to the soundtrack to Legends, but Encounters is a fantastic song! : o
I would have put New Messiah somewhere in the middle, not #25. Glad you included it. Its an overlooked song from and overlooked entry.
Dude, "Monster Dance" should be wayyyy higher! Aren't many other tunes that instantly make you think of the series in such a way.
and "Vampire Killer" at #8????!!!! That's blasphemy!
I agree with this list, SPECIALLY No1
So not surprised at #1 :p .
Re-listening to it, I'm surprised that Mad Forest didn't get remixed for Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. They remixed pretty much every other great NES theme, but not Mad Forest, even though I think it would have fit well in the game.
Awesome! Not really much of a castlevania fan, but the music is too good!
Listend to these songs many times.
Yas I'm glad the soundtrack for castlevania 3 was in here. Such good songs on that game.
great video... i like your comments on the songs also.
Bloody Tears should be number 1 regardless of length... It is just perfect for the Castlevania series. And it really surprises me Wicked Child is so high at number 3, I find it too upbeat and kind of generic. But it is your list so, all I can do is to comment. Nice compilation none the less.
Sorry vampire killer must be better
Agree with Bloody Tears, but wicked child is too a great song ! Top5 for me
Great top guys, but.. no Battle of the holy (Castlevania the adventure: stage 1) and Overture(Castlevania III) ?
Vastelvania T^T my childhood !!!! I feel so old now xD
walking on the edge, out of time, (CV2 town theme), monster dance, dwelling of doom, mad forest and riddle are the best.
Yup. Bloody tears is great.
Aw, no Battle Of Holy from Castlevania Adventure 1?
#14 always scares me with how freaken loud it comes in.
I think my favorite is New Messiah.
I gotta say I felt like heart of fire was wayyyy too low. I would have had it top 5 myself
Surprised Out Of Time from CV1 isn't on here. That song is ballblowingly good.
Beginning is definitely #1, and Castlevania 3 definitely had the best soundtrack overall. Great list :D .
#3 Wicked child is probably my favorite but damn theyre all so good
borndead4420 mine too; however, I fell so in love with SOTN that I didn't replay the older games. Hell I'm 44, everything's older now.
Vampire Killer must to be 1st!!! ❤️🦇🧛🏻♂️
I saw that Number 1 coming. I was thinking back to my childhood and wondered...what was the song that made me the most excited....yup. Nailed it. I don't think I felt this way again until I heard the first stage in Rondo of Blood.
They say that you listen to 8 bit before you go to sleep, you have trippy dreams. Let's try, shall we?
+Alix Human I never heard that, I'll have to give it a try.
Yes. Also, drink lots of apple juice.
HUH? Why's that?
Some sort of chemical reaction with the brain by the apple's...whatever makes it even better. I tried that one, actually. It works!
Just make sure its 100% juice.
That's crazy. Will have to try it out sometime. Do you remember what the dream was about? lol
If you really want to hear how Castlevania pushed the limits of 8-bit music, listen to the Famicom version of Castlevania III instead.
I was about to say
I don't know but walking on the edge is easily in my top 5. It is a bit short kinda like Bubble Man's Theme but damn is it awesome!
There's a huge mistake at 13:55. The protagonist of Castlevania 3 Dracula's Curse isn't Simon. The correct is Trevor.
+Fernando Crevelário Ah, you are right! Sorry about that. Can't believe we made that error.
So am I the only one who thinks the intro song in this video, not even in the top 25, is the best? I always loved the password screen music in Castlevania 2. Definitely my favorite.
Same, it's almost dreamlike to me.
Am I missing something or did Stage 6 from Castlevania not make it? Also was really surprised not to see Wicked Child at #1. Great list!
Mad Forest is definitely one of the most underrated songs in VGM history..
I actually want to see your opinions about the VRC6 version BGM from Japanese version of CV3, since you put a screenshot(s) inside.
ya know, looking back on this i’d say Vampire Killer is #1 for me, because when i got Castlevania 1 as a kid in the 80s, it took me forever to beat the first level, so this is the song i heard over & over & over until it was tattooed on my brain, just like Mario, Zelda, and Contra 😂😂
It's the song that everyone will always associate with Castlevania but my fave will always be Bloody Tears!
freaking #3 though
I personally think that Encounters from legends was awesome.
I see where are you coming from, but i still think that it should be higher.
Nice video, and I did find some favorites since I never played the GB titles until the Collection in their entirety. My only complaint is I feel that you are biased for 3.
NEW MESSIAH IN THE LAST PLACE WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE PEOPLE NOWADAYS
and no themes from Adventure? Death Fair, Battle of the Holy, REVENGE, these are EPIC themes.
but yeah, Nice vid
Interesting. No. 5 starts out with 4/4 meter for a measure and then 6/8 for another measure interchangeably in the intro. Pretty cool stuff here overall!
Love Wicked Child and Vampire Killer, in the mean time both Heart of Fire and Bloody Tears are legend.
Big Feet entire soundtrack from Castlevania original is masterpiece
Great list of classic Castlevania music! But since you seems to focus on lenght, mouvement and composition to rank the tracks I'm surprised that " Battle of the Holy" isn't even on this list. Composers did wonders with the game boy on this one. Such an underrated track, easy top 10 for me!
PS: Sorry if my english might be a little bit broken, I'm french.
My only complaint would be that you used the CV3 tracks from the NES version rather than the FAMICOM version, other than that, this is a pretty solid list
Love all these vids. Thanks for the work! One thing I don't understand - I always heard Game Boy had one less instrument than NES (square, triangle, noise vs square, square, triangle, noise), but I distinctly hear four instruments in 18:40. All the other game boy tracks you can hear only three, but this one stands out to me. What's up with that?
Siyko I listened to it again and I think it sounds like the composers were merely very creative with their use of audio channels. I think it's still just 3 - but, this was very late in the Gameboy life cycle, so presumably composers were adept by then at forming game music on the platform.
GreatGonzales1 Yeah, I think what sounds like the two squares are just really quick appregiation on the same instrument - supported by the very short notes that the harmony plays.
Good list, I enjoy the comments, but you forgot Ripe Seeds from Castlevania 2: Belmont's Revenge
Thanks alot for making this video! I hope there will be more great ones from you to come. One question tho, is there any specific reason, why you've used 2a03 versions of songs from CV3 instead of VCR6 ones?

i am sad Out of Time didn’t make it on the list, but i agree with everything else on this list
Good Top 25 but 5 : Anxiety... Why ? XD
Anxiety in top 25 XD !!
Super heureux de trouver des thèmes de Castlevania LegendS, car je trouve l'OST vraiment bonne, même si beaucoup la critique. ( Mon premier Castlvania^^)
Verry happy to find songs of Castlevania LegendS, because I find the OST really good, even if many criticism. (My first Castlvania ^^)
My favorite is Heart of Fire
I still say Super Castlevania IV has the best version of Bloody Tears, Vampire Killer, and Beginning.
Mad Forest probably doesn't get much attention because it's rarely been remixed for later Castlevania games-- only appearing in Castlevania Judgment, I believe. That sets it apart from other great themes like Aquarius, The Beginning, Vampire Hunter, etc. I had heard the song, but I wouldn't have been able to place it as Mad Forest.
I had a feeling I knew what your #1 was gonna be! Can't argue with that choice. I do think Aquarius was ranked too low, though.
Castlevania NES is such a fucking solid game. Some day I'll beat death legit. Each time I come back stronger, even after years I make it slightly farther. Hearing the music play in its entirety as you adeptly maneuver the clunky human Simon Belmont and his divine whip through obstacles that once seemed impassable is its own reward :^)
Loved your list, but Bloody Tears should've been #1 come on.
Stalker and Vampire Killer are the best and no.1.
I personally think bloody tears is the best
Vampire Killer * Stalker from Castlevania Chronicles. Bloody Tears from that game is also very good.
My only issue is seeing Dracula's visage in the clips for #13, because that song was never used in Dracula's castle. That was just for the mansions. The theme for the castle was even better, if that's possible.
Quite happy Clocktower made the list. One of my favorite 8-bit songs.
Also, is it just me, or does Legends have a very Ninja Gaiden/II feel to it? I can't shake it. It doesn't really fit in with the feel of the NES releases.
DID YOU NOYICE THAT CASTLEVANIA SEEM TO BE THE MAIN THEME?!!!!!!
maybe i'm crazix
the best
I really love the Castlevania 3 soundtrack, but the Japanese version sounds SO much cooler with the extra sound chip included in the cartridge... which the NES is not compatible with (curses!). Hearing those tunes in NES version, I appreciated how much they managed to fix it up to sound cool with the standard NES sound chip, but it also immediately sent me off looking for Akumajou Densetsu (the Famicom version).
song in the intro called?
Never heard of castlevania II: Belmont's revenge, what happened to Simons quest? (My guess is too hard so people gave up on it, I don't blame them honestly XD)
Not really so "hard". Just convoluted as fuuuck!
