    JRiver is a great company. 5 years ago I had been using their software for the trial period, but dropped it, because I couldn't afford paying for a music player, being a student. The Developer directly contacted me via email and asked why I have dropped MC and if it were anything to improve. I explained him why I had stopped using the software, and in response, they have given me a full licence. I can only recommend them!

    You are wonderful. Thank you so very much for your informative review. I plan on watching many more of your videos…probably after writing this review to you.
    Thanks again.

    Thank you for the excellent review!
    I came to similar conclusions for my audio setup but I have yet to try JRiver MC or Roon. Amarra was one of the earliest commercial players on the market but I thought their stratospheric pricing and ridiculous licensing method was offensive back then. You might recall that they required a USB dongle in order to enable their software.
    Competition drove Amarra pricing back to earth along with the elimination of their stupid USB dongle.
    My experience with BitPerfect many years ago was disappointing because it had stability issues and would sometimes locked up on my system.
    I liked Pure Music but I did not like the way it 'wraps around' the iTunes player onscreen.
    I have been using Audirvana Plus for a few years now in iTunes Integrated Mode. I am presently on Audirvana Plus 2.2.5 and it is wonderful. I still use it in iTunes Integrated Mode but I may try it for library management as well.
    Mac Mini 16GB + SSD + Linear Power Supply > Ayre QB9-DSD DAC > Ayre AX-7e Integrated > Tannoy Defintion D500 speakers.

      +voodooaudio Thanks for your extensive report. I personally use Roon now (see ruclips.net/video/yrRfhWcLoqA/видео.html). I don't need any upsampling and love the metadata and UI.

    Me too find JRiver MC and Audirvana 2+ the very best hi-fidelity players, transparent and pure. And also I found Amarra too soft sounding to be enjoyable. Coincidence? I don't think so.

    I would also recommend PonoMusic World (www.ponomusic.com/ccrz__CCPage?pageKey=pmw), a free branded audio-only version of JRiver Media Center. I've been happily using it on OSX for the last year. It appears to be identical to JRiver Media Center minus support for video files.

    I believe the Amarra Hifi is the cheap version of Amarra with no memory play which is essential to me. I have Amarra and Jriver 21 for my Mac and PC. I use Jriver on the PC of course as Amarra is Mac only. For me the Jriver sounds a little warmer on my Mac mini but crashes a lot. Thus I use Amarra (not HIfi) on the Mac most. I haven't tried Audirvana +2. I did use Pure Music and tried Amarra and preferred Amarra. I do prefer the smoother tube like sound. I really enjoy your reviews!

      +Jim L Thanks for your input. Funny that JRiver crashes a lot at your place. With me it's very stable. I can understand your preference for Amarra, it all has to do with the rest of the equipment and personal taste. Thanks for the compliments.

    Hi Hans
    Thanks for this comparison, I appreciate!
    Could you please give some hints on the following:
    I'd like to use a convolver plugin with my customized response curve.
    Well, I spent like half a day on doing researches and conclude:
    - JRiver got it built in (DSP section), but JRiver is standalone, thus not my preferred choice for time being as a veteran iTunes user.
    - ChannelD Pure Music and Audirvana do support AU plugins, however, apart from the expensive studio grade plugins, I only found one open-source plugin for this purpose called KlangFalter, but for whatever reason it won't load the GUI within Pure Music.
    I
    Any thoughts on free or inexpensive convolver AU plugins that allow me to just run my custom response curve (as wav)?

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  7 лет назад

      I have no experience with convolution and if I will ever, I will use Roon. That does networked audio but is not free.

    so, you may have helped, I have a set of Kef X300a USB speakers and the sound is sometimes bloody awful despite being told that they would be almost audiophile quality by all the reviewers, as i tried them with a different computer they sounded better (not by much) and with my cowon plenue D player even better still (through 3.5mm stereo plugs) I am using Flac files ripped with EAC and some files are terrible but good with the DAP, so you say it may be my HP laptop. Thanks mate, Regards, Bob.

    I know this is an old(er) vid, Hans, but I feel compelled to have my say re 'bits is bits'. I spent a ridiculous amount of 2014 getting Audiophile Optimizer (AO) up and running on Windows Server 2012, rebooting endless times to try to find the 'right' boot level to get the sonic bliss devotees told me I'd be experiencing (Oppo BDP-105D into HD800, fwiw) and I swear the only perceptible difference was a blacker background : hardly worth it given that my PC was now complete captive to a single application.
    Fast forward to 2016, after buying virtually every commercial playback software you can name (including JRMC and Audirvana+), and I discovered the only DSP that has ever really wowed me courtesy of the geniuses behind Roon. I'm less enthused by the eye candy than most, but anyoe who needs confirmation that network audio is the way to go should be strapped into a chair for 30 minutes with an Android tablet and a pair of decent headphones or active speakers : Roon will rapidly make a believer of them. Thanks for the vid.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  7 лет назад

      You are right, this video is from the pre-Roon era. And I also love Roon, but why these other solutions didn't provide satisfactory results I really can't tell. Especially with Windows boxes the hardware can vary strongly and might not always be optimally working together. And then you need drivers for that hardware that should work together well. I rather think that your current installation had that all worked out perfectly. Although Roon is really bit perfect, so are JRiver, and many other audiophile players. Only when you use the standard windows media player or other player without the right drivers, the result can be worse.

    • @arthurwatts1680
      @arthurwatts1680 7 лет назад

      Hans, the big difference (for me at least) is that I was listening *intently* for differences with my earlier experiments but with Roon I was more interested in the eye candy and the metadata. The sound quality really only hit me when I stopped looking at the graphics and settled back to listen to music, and that's exactly how it *should* be with ANY new component be it hardware or software. Remember when we raved about an amp or speakers that simply 'disappear' when you start playing music ? Roon has made me re-evaluate my attitude to expensive DSP solutions from people like DEQx and Linn : prior to Roon I remained skeptical to the extent to which software could seriously impact sound quality (assuming bitperfect playback and a reasonable playback chain).
      Keep the vids coming - you are providing a valuable service in a sea of 'look at my shiny new toy !' vids from people who should be past that stage by now. I dont envy you, trying to describe sound via a visual medium, but this is technology that the wider audiophile world ignores at its peril.
      (fwiw, I no longer have the HD800 - too analytical and I realised that I prefer fun cans like the Fidelio X1/X2 from Phillips - please dont judge me for that :D )

    I’m using a Mac mini USB’d to an Topping E50. I got BitPerfect and I can’t make it work with Apple Music, it probably misses ITunes or I’ve screwed up I’m now testing Audirvāna and find it works on all types of audio files and reads the DAC allowing me to upsample and apply filters from right from my computer. It’s also a bit buggy and requires occasional rebooting. I miss the editing in Apple Music and still go back to Music if I need to rename stuff. Still lots I don’t know about Audirvāna. Wish they had better instructions. I also wish someone could modify an Apple Music clone that did all the work Audirvāna did. I’ll probably buy it though because It’s the best I’ve found.

    +The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel. You said that BitPerfect player has a mid centric sound. It will be helpful if you can produce frequency respose graph to illustrate this point. Same for other players which you mentioned. Human sound preference/ perception are very subjective. So what you said may just be your personal subjective impressions. A note of clarification in case of misunderstanding, you do very competent reviews. Please also note that at the time of your review, the Bitperfect Player utilises memory play which you claim that it did not. You may also like to know that BitPerfect player is also DSD capable by use of an additional plug in. Also another feed back - at times your presentation could be highly technical in your various videos and understandable by only a few perhaps sound engineers or those very technically inclined. Who are your target audiences ? It will expand your audience and subscriptions base if these technicals be explained in simpler terms understandable by the ordinary man in the street. Thank you.

    • @hansbeekhuyzen7770
      @hansbeekhuyzen7770 8 лет назад

      You will see nothing of significance in a frequency graph. It probably due to filter behaviour and - indeed - it might indicate a non bit perfect behaviour.

    Hi Hans, do you think you could do a video talking about the different Audivana 2+ settings?
    The audio filters part in particular confuses me and it would be great to know what they do!
    Kind regards, James

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  8 лет назад +1

      +James Stanley I would have loved to but I have to remain loyal to my mission statement to help people that have (re-)discovered decent home audio to an affordable and modern stereo set. Freaking with filters doesn't fit in, I'm afraid. BTW, my first suggestion would be: kill all processing and upsampling and go for a DAC that sounds good.

    Hi....is Wiim pro using coax out on marantz hd dac1 bit perfect?
    Ty

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  Год назад

      It is 'bit perfect' in the sense that every bit is sent out. But these are carried by a mediocre bit stream that will do in low end DAC's but mid range DACs clearly will perform less than when connected to a higher class streamer.

    Thank you for taking the time to do this useful review. I look forward to checking out your other reviews. I have a couple of questions if you don't mind? I've been using JRivers for a few years now on a PC and just love it! Prior to that, I ran Bitperfect and Decible on a 24" imac. My thoughts are the same as yours with the Bitperfect and Decible. Althought, I'm getting very tired of Windows in general, and want to buy a mac mini (I hope the 2016 model is not disappointing). I truly did enjoy Theater Mode in JRivers. I'm I correct to think the Mac version does not have theater mode? Between JRivers and Audiovava, which is the easiest the use? I do find JRivers somewhat confusing.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  8 лет назад

      +Roy Leclair Audirvana is far more simple. That makes it easy to operate but also limits the number of features. I haven't seen the Theater mode in the Mac version. You could also consider Roon (see ruclips.net/video/yrRfhWcLoqA/видео.html). Not cheap but exactly what I was looking for.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

      I don't think there is a best way, there are many ways to do this. Any modern bit perfect software player will be able to drive a DSD-DAC. See ruclips.net/video/VJjZJ10RT6k/видео.html for more on playing audio files.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel
      @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel  4 года назад +2

      I love both Roon and Audivana sound wise. I have no experience using Pure Music. But in general it's the hardware that makes the difference. If you hear differences in sound quality, it most likely is due to compatibility of hardware.

    I have downloaded the trial version of JRIVER for Mac and find it is loaded with bugs, some causing a complete crash. particularly when trying to rip CDs to FLAC files. When a CD is inserted, it takes 2-3 refreshes for the CD to be read, then when I press Rip tracks, sometimes if forgets the CD data and has to be reread! Ripping should be a very simple process, put a disc in, then the software should immediately open the dice and show the metadata collected from the web. Let me edit if necessary then simply rip! I find the program is on the slow side. Probably because its trying to be a universal media application. I really do not care for all the video and other features, images, Television, Cloud, etc etc.! I think Jriver should clean up the code and just make an audiophile version of their software. My 2 cents.

    • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

      +Ab Sa Better than what? Audio doesn't stress a server at all. Only when the streamer server software needs a lot of power (like with Squeezebox) you would need a modern NAS or server. But you can just hook up a USB2 drive (or better) to a computer running JRiver, Audirvana or any other locally running software.
