  • Follow along as I catch the switching exercise 9/7/22, from a different vantage point. This past summer the Durango & Silverton ran a lot of doublehead 15 car trains to Silverton, but the wye only holds 15 cars without an engine. Turning the train requires a slight modification to the Silverton switching operation. After pushing back to the Silverton depot, helper engine K36 #480 cuts loose from the train and runs around and turns on the wye. K36 #482 pushes the train into the tail of the wye and cuts loose and pulls forward. #480 backs to the train and finishes the turn and pushes back to pick up the passengers for the single engine train return to Durango. #482 runs light ahead of the train.
    Ex-WP&Y DL535E3 #107 makes a cameo appearance.

I rode the D&S before and I've pretty much seen the Y. It's awesome! I love the action! Beats the old turntable.

Thanks. I rode the D&S back in August and I wondered how they did the switching in Silverton.

This sure was interesting to watch. Kinda wish I got to see this when I visited D&S last summer. Except I was distracted by the places to see in the town of sliverton.

On the Durango and Silverton, are the engineers allowed to blow the whistle fun sounding like A Long, Long, Short, Long at The Crossings?

Very Nice work, what happen to the helper? Did it go back in front, behind or did it get inserted back into it's place?

Kinda wish they didn’t buy Diesel locomotives. I prefer the Steam Locomotives.

Stunning work Sir. Judging by the whistle delay you were slightly over A mile away, I love that vantage point on such a clear beautiful day, Were you using a directional disk to aid your Mic setup?
Happy holidays Sir to you and your family and safe travels.

David, Glad you enjoyed it! I was only about 1/2 mile away. I have a $35 Emiral condensing mike with a homemade dead cat type windsock. Thanks for watching and commenting. Happy holidays to you and yours.
