  • In this video we take the Cascade Canyon Express route on the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The route begins in Durango, Colorado and heads north into San Juan National Forest along the Animas River, and riding on the edge of 1,000+ foot drop offs in the canyon. The train turns around up in Cascade Canyon and after a 1 hour lunch heads back down to Durango. For this trip we took one of the historic steam locomotives and restored coach from the late 1800's. Riding the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is an absolute must for anyone visiting Durango and is a one of a kind experience.

I would like to thank you so much. I love trains and always wanted to ride one. Now that I'm older, living with many chronic health issues and mostly homebound I find great joy in watching videos like these. I can feel like I'm part of the adventure.

Thank you so much for this experience - I 'm 83 now & when I was a small kid in London we used to watch trains at the bottom of our garden go by on their way to Scotland - so many famous engines - this 'tooting' was often heard in my neighborhood ! It was the Great Northern Railway, and a shunting yard nearby where we watched the engines shunting the cargo vans on to their final trains - I spent many a day sitting on top of our shed to get a good look ! So these sounds are part of my childhood. It's so nice that they take care of the old stock & let people ride in the carriages nowadays. We have a local one also here in my now neighborhood in NJ - line goes up to Canada, the trains are not quite as old as this one, but still get plenty of local appreciation. Loved it !

Oh, c'mon(!!); I thought that we were going all the way to Silverton(Laughs!!); maybe some other day?? If this was a through train to Silverton, with a full load, just think how happy all of the restaurateurs and souvenir shop people would be! I loved hearing all the kiddies aboard going all agog over everything! I loved looking at the Ponderosa Pines; some looked just about as tall as in California. Somehow, they don't look quite as tall, as you're driving along the 550. And I'd personally traveled the 550, the San Juan Skyway & Million-Dollar Highway routes, way back in 1970. Some of those trees and tall shrubs grow very close to the passage; if people stick too much of themselves out the windows, they could suffer cuts or worse. I wonder if it's possible with the timetables, for folks to live in Silverton, then to commute to jobs and back, in Durango? And a good thing that "Shack" and "A No. 1" ("Emperor of The North"), weren't busting it up, on this train! I'd guess this road's about as steep as it gets, without having to resort to Shay-Gear locomotives. And I wish that I could have smelled all of that smoke. You know, when a computer has a good sound system, it feels like you're really on board this train.

Interesting/breath takingly entertaining.😉. Excellent photography job enabling viewers to experience similar sensations as the train riders are. The clacking of the train wheels & blowing of the steam. Makes this presentation more authentic like riding on the train🚂. Yes I had the good fortune to visit some years ago-!😉. View4ing this presentation from the safe zone of my computer room. Along the " Space Coast " 🚀 of Florida🐊🐊. No scenic train🚂 rides here-!😭. Wishing viewers/R.R. employees a safe/healthy/prosperous ( 2024 ) 🌈🎉😉.

Took this trip in June 2023. The long climb from Durango to Silverton was beautiful in a gondola car (no glass - open air) with blue skies all morning. Two steam engines pulled us up and we made two stops for water. It's quite slow and the rails are rather rough in places, swaying the cars quite a bit. We nearly stopped to get an adolescent moose off the track near Silverton. Best deal on the train is the $10 souvenir cup from the snack car with free refills. Lunch in Silverton was two hours and DO NOT BE LATE boarding the train as it will leave without you. Silverton looked just like a mining town in Alaska with exactly one paved road. Many travelers stay in Silverton - it's not just railroad passengers there.
