LOL! We exported this video this morning with TWO LUTS applied to it by accident from media encoder (the ones that are supposed to correct Premiere's colour space)... so I looked a bit orange... HERE'S THE REAL VERSION!
Man, mark, the way you get straight to the point is fantastic, it lets amateur viewers really take what they want from the video-without either being treated like a child or a decades-in professional. We need more content like this, man
1. I love colour tips. This was super helpful. 2. I love even more stumbling upon local creators and recognizing the talent in their footage (Hi, Colin Price!). 3. Hope to run into you on set someday now that the world's opened back up, you seem like you'd be a great addition to any project. Thanks for the teachings!
It's little stuff like this that makes the difference to a lot of beginners out there. Skin tones, oddly, is something that was skipped over when I was in school. Middle grey was everything -- hard stop. I'm a Toronto guy, too! I'd love to work with you one day. We also have a close friend in common, whaaaaaat.
Mark, I’m dropping this comment to say I’m now aware of your channel and very excited for what that means for my life. I respect your backlog massively, and am looking forward to seeing what you put out in the future. If I wanted to watch a doc you directed or shot, where should I go to watch this? Do you have like a Mark Bone viewing guide? Cheers, congrats on beating the rona, I hope you still got to go to set afterwards
This is one of the best and key tips to make that break through around understanding colour correction and skin tones. It really gets you out of that rut of not understanding the process. The rest is aesthetic then as long as skin tones dont look mental.
Thank you for this! As an African American, it's been difficult for me to know exactly how to color grade my skin. Either it's too bright or too dark but never just perfect! Appreciate the information!
Definitely learned something, but I didn’t actually see what you tweaked when you moved from tint to midtones but that’s moot since I use FCPX - I’ll have a look over in FCPX to see if I can apply your technique. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
This simple trick - will change everything for me. I always struggled with nailing the skin tones. I knew about the bloodline. But never thought of isolating a skin portion of the image. Now it seems like the most obvious thing to do :D Thanks mate! You're a beast. Keep it up! 🙌
Mark thank you very much for the information I honestly struggle with skin tones all the time even in my portrait photography. most RUclipsrs don't go into clear detail on how to do this how you did it great job mate and wishing good health and Good vibes.
Great video man! Skin tones have been a bane for me for a while, so this really helps. Great channel as well. Subscribed all the way from Trinidad and Tobago!
what timing! I was going to rework my skin tones in my first ever video (sorry not meaning to promo) before I upload and you always there to give me that guide Thanks!
You re my new favorite tutorial RUclipsr. I struggle so much with the skin tone, i can't trust my screen for color accuracy and after a while I can't trust my eye either 🤷🏼♂️ but now with my new knowledge .. (blood color axe) i ll crushing it 👊. Well i hope 😅
I want to say no.. BUT in post would you say using the skin tone line be reliable to fix white balance issues? OR to match color between different cameras? -- Thanks for taking the time to make this video btw!
I agree with everybody else, this is an excellent tutorial that among other things shows how to do basic color correction with less-than-perfect color vision, a need that does arise. (You can also use a roughly parallel approach with a high-quality -- not cheap! -- color reference cards or even a neutral gray card if you shoot it at the start of each setup.) And also that's a great remark about the plain ignorance inherent in racism.
#BigFan From nigeria. love your videos, especially the one of understanding documentary. i am not much of a documentary guy but after watching it, i kinda picked interest. May God Shine His face upon you. and Thank God you are healed of Covid-19. remain lifted sir. This video is straight to the point. Thank you.
Hey Mark, awesome video thanks so much! And glad you are Covid clear!! Perhaps another topic to jump into might be lighting different skin tones. I have watched some similar content in the past but it would be great to recap that subject.
first off you're my new favorite chanell (im' a hobbyist hybrid shooter). I sold my sony a7iii due to skin tones, but watching you're AMAZING footage makes me more resolved to buy Canon R6 for. hybrid shooting (docs/travel/family stuff) the yellow/green tint is very much a turn off to my eye but know the resolution is amazing on sony
Also the lumetri scopes you showed regarding natasha's skin tones - my eyes much prefer the before than after - maybe that is why i'm biased toward wanting to watch canon over sony ... you're the man!
"Perfect Skin Tone" tutorial *adds two LUTs* No but for real, I spent all weekend color grading footage working on dialing in skin tones - SO QUIT READING MY MIND MARK
This technique helped me a lot with fixing green magenta problem with skin. but what I really struggle with is the skin Temperature and not the Tint. the only workaround I know is to find a grayish color in the seen (Not white, Not Black cause their dead pixels) and mask and make the spectrum to land in the center. this would work perfectly. But let's face it how many times you have pure desaturated gray color in your frame? :D
Oh also I usually mask the skin part under the lips down to neck cause this would have more contrast (luminance) of the skin and you can fix the skin from shadow, mid tone to highlight. Forehead rarely have color info about the shadows.
juat realized this isnt fixing skin tones this is adjusting the entire clip which is someting alot of people dont want to do. maybe use hsl secondary and select the face then lock it. from there you can change the skin without messing with the shole scene
Hey Mark nice video. Never knew about the blood line. Does exposure work the same way? Is there a similar tip regarding exposure for skin tone (Not over or under exposing based on the talent's skin tone?
Mark Bone just used premiere pro to destroy racism. Truly incredible 👌🏽
Incredible stuff
That played a part in me subscribing!
LOL! We exported this video this morning with TWO LUTS applied to it by accident from media encoder (the ones that are supposed to correct Premiere's colour space)... so I looked a bit orange... HERE'S THE REAL VERSION!
Mark Bone I love the irony of applying two LUTs on a video about perfect skin tone 🤣
Happens to the best of us... and also me.
🤣🤣🤣
Where can I find those LUTS correcting Premiere's color space?! Really need that.
Great tip with masking the forehead and then using scopes for that! Loved this tutorial.
thanks brother! You do great tutorials on this stuff also!
Teppo! Cool to see you here! Just saw you on the video with Matti earlier on!
Man, mark, the way you get straight to the point is fantastic, it lets amateur viewers really take what they want from the video-without either being treated like a child or a decades-in professional. We need more content like this, man
Finally the guy who speaking soft but make me understand loud and clear thank you so much for you tutorial man
Thanks for this tip! I really like the fact that this guy is a documentary shooter and you can see his finished work! So many others don't do it.....,
I'll be sure to bookmark this video to bone up on my color grading skills. Thanks!
Can you make video tutorial using HSL secondary? That would be so dope!
That is the easiest way I have seen on skin colour correction.
Thanks...
Will try it soon
SOOOOO refreshing to get a straightforward and just-plain-helpful video! Thanks Mark Bone!

Bro! You've been missing out. Mark is amazing! This is one of my favorite short docs, (It's shot by Mark, and Matti), vimeo.com/245921296
💯 agree. So easy to follow along and understand 🙌🏼
"Which is why racism is so stupid, cause we all are made of the same things" - Amen - I like how you slipped that in there lol. God Bless, bro!
I dig the hair! Glad ur ok.
Sending my class to this video Mark. It's in the Rubric. This is the one. Incredible.
Yeaasss!! Love it. Hope you’re well brother
This is one of the best and key tips to make that break through around understanding colour correction and skin tones. It really gets you out of that rut of not understanding the process. The rest is aesthetic then as long as skin tones dont look mental.
Nicely done correcting for the re upload.
Thank you for this! As an African American, it's been difficult for me to know exactly how to color grade my skin. Either it's too bright or too dark but never just perfect! Appreciate the information!
Simple but brilliant really, thanks brother!
This is genius. Thank you for sharing!!! I have wrestled with the skin tones many times.
This is the most useful tip I've ever seen! thank you!

Thanks man! Masks are everything once you start using them for colour
This is definitely great tips for me. This is exactly what I am looking for. I am very terrible in skin tone. Thanks again
Mark thank you very much for the information I honestly struggle with skin tones all the time even in my portrait photography. most RUclipsrs don't go into clear detail on how to do this how you did it great job mate and wishing good health and Good vibes.
Good simple basic tutorial👍🏻 Your experiences does talk
Hey Mark good to see your doing well considering the circumstances you faced. Thanks for the tips on skin tone! Cheers!
Very interesting. Been working in a room full of gaudy colours and I've always struggled to get the skin tones right. Will have to give this a go!
🙏🏻 let me know how it goes!!
I'm going to try this. Thanks.
Great video man! Skin tones have been a bane for me for a while, so this really helps. Great channel as well. Subscribed all the way from Trinidad and Tobago!
I’ve never heard of anyone using the term “Bloodline” to refute racism. That is absolutely Awesome! I Love It!
Beautiful tip. Thank you.

2:43 I thought you were awesome before this, now it's confirmed!!!
So useful...love this channel
Great video thanks !
Would you do this before or after color correction and color grading ? Thanks for the videos, I’ve learned some valuable info from your channel.
Well it's difficult to dial this in without proper contrast or saturation, so most of the time I would do it as a secondary
Mark Bone oh yea that makes sense. Thanks man appreciate it

thanks for the tips!
"Racism is stupid", didn't expect that in a premiere pro tutorial, but its true, we all bleed red and love the color green
this helped , thank you!
"Perfect Skin Tone" tutorial

Shit! That's nuts. I never knew this! What a create method! Thanks for sharing!

Easy fix but so important .
So easy!
Really good. And simple. Any suggestions on how to do this in davinci resolve? Thanks.
TBH no idea. I would assume there is a similar way to do it
@@markbone thanks. I understand the idea now. Will look into resolve for this.
you are a legend, savedddd me
glad to see your not that far away..hit me up if ya ever need help on set
juat realized this isnt fixing skin tones this is adjusting the entire clip which is someting alot of people dont want to do. maybe use hsl secondary and select the face then lock it. from there you can change the skin without messing with the shole scene
Mark bones you deserve the “????” Someone help me with the RUclips Award Equivalent for the Grammys..
Great tutorial all round..
This dude destroy racism with only Premiere Pro. Thank you bro !
Thank you!
Wow man
How do you create these deep skin tones, not just color but the richness, if that makes sense?
Great video
Thank you so much for this tip sir. Just a quick one , do u color correct and grade before correcting skin or before ?
I set my exposure and contrast usually before I touch skin
Some Resolve tutorials would be greatly appreciated! ;)
Yay for bloodlines. Thanks again, Mark!
great tip!
what was the point of using a green light if you didnt want the green? or was the screen just so bright that it bounced off the walls?
hey, one question if you can answer :)
what are the ohter axes of the scope?
cheer men, great content
Great tips! What do you do though if the scope says it's right, but the shot doesn't match with others?
Hey Mark nice video. Never knew about the blood line. Does exposure work the same way? Is there a similar tip regarding exposure for skin tone (Not over or under exposing based on the talent's skin tone?
can you talk about the level of saturation on skin tones
thanks
Amazing in 2024. Ty👍🏾
