I have seen all your videos using milk jugs and 4 inch pipes. Could a person use 2 layers of 4 inch pipe like the one you did and have the drain hole at 7 inches ?
I use 6” drain pipe in half barrels. I assume you’re wanting to increase the water reservoir. I think your idea would work as long as there’s enough potting mix above to support your plants.
@@donskin9795 I plan on using the cattle feeding tubs and rounding the potting soil as high as possible. Do you think that would be enough potting mix to support the plant? Thanks for your response.
My half barrels are 18” tall so that leaves about 12” of potting mix above. I round mine up but it always settles down some. I also cover my with black plastic to keep the rain out. Wicking tubs work great. I’ve been using them for 4 years. Currently I have 34 of them and would like to have a few more. Remember to use potting mix. Potting soil is too heavy and will not wick as well as potting mix.
@@donskin9795 My containers are17" tall with the two 4" pipes and drain hole at 7 ". I am new at this and when I saw that 6 inch pipes had been used I thought that adding 2 more inches might work. I was unable to find 6" pipes without buying 100 feet. I am gone for 7 days some times during the growing season. Do you think this will be OK?
This was so interesting! I am on my 3rd year growing veggies on my little patio in 5 gallon wicking buckets, thanks to you! It’s so easy and low maintenance and has been quite successful for me here in NE Oklahoma. I just made an herb garden for my daughter in one for her first try at patio gardening. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and ideas. Keep up the great work!
Hi. Thanks for commenting. There's so many variables. What's your soil medium? Who mixed it and with what ingredients? When and where do you water? Green house or no? 12 hours scorching sun, or mostly shade? Do you fertilize, and what's your mix and method? Are there pests? What are your pruning habits and for which variety? Hope this helps :)
Leon, at about 6:34 in the video it looks like you have something growing in cardboard legal boxes along the side of the green house. Can you post a video on those containers?
hmmmmm;;;;;Mr Leon;;;what do you do when ya have mater vines afraid of heights;;;lol;;;;just kidding;;;;be waiting for the results;;;my concrete wire cages not tall ennough for my maters always gtrow over and start down and usually break whe get big tomatoes on them;;;so I b experimentin this year ;;;I be leaving a few suckers when my plants hit top of wire so they can grow up;;;and after I pick tomatoes off the main stem I top them hoping they won;t get any taller;;;anyway enjoyred as always and keep em comin
Impressive solutions. But your root zone is going to be consistently overheated past 90f though maybe it won't matter as your flowers will be shaded & in the cooler 84f-shade. I have been wanting to experiment with flood-&-drain to ensure that the large-plants get a completely soaked root-zone in case there are any hydrophobic pockets of dry-dry-soil. But I think 10 inches of soil is somewhat of a max due to possible anaerobic conditions in high-organic soils.
Mr. Leon, a walking, garden encyclopedia. I always look forward to your videos. 😁
Can you get the tomato 🍅 plants to start setting blossoms after shutting down from excessive heat days?
Your devoted subscriber!
Wow! I never thought about planting my tomatoes like this. This is really neat and less weeds too!
Wish I could spend a week with you sir. You're the best tomato grower I've seen. My first real job.
Leon makes me happy
I am having a hard time getting my tomato blooms to set....any advise?

I thought I answered your question a couple of days ago but I guess I didn’t hit the sent button. I’ll try again.

Cool! Can't wait to see this later in the season!
Love your videos. Thank you gor all the good advice. Its made ne be able to garden again.
Thanks Leon for all your knowledge
What would happen if I pruned the tomato vines when they reach the ground?
They would put 2 times the amount of vines that way
Honestly I think it's better to try it and tell us. There are so many variables, including variety of species.
I've got some tomatoes in the wicking tubs like you've shown. My first tomatoes have blossom end rot and cat facing. I'm in Arkansas

What is the space between the barrels? Thank you
6’

Nice not having to bend over, deal with cages, tieing up vines...
