- Residents on Chicago’s South Side expressed outrage and frustration Wednesday, saying they’re not happy about a new grocery store opening and replacing Whole Foods in Englewood, NBC 5’s Vi Nguyen reports.
"We want... ...we want... ...we want..." How about picking up the ball and opening the kind of store you think you want?
Or how about addressing the problems that led to Whole Foods pulling out?
Everybody in those neighborhoods isn’t responsible for what others do nor can control what people do they don’t know, that’s like someone addressing mass shooters in their neighborhood, do you know everyone in your neighborhood on every block.? Just because they live in a neighborhood that’s not so great doesn’t mean you lump everyone in that neighborhood in the same box they work and pay taxes too. That’s what you call a stereotype.
Yea, maybe Prickster will pull some of his money from his Grand Cayman tax haven, he can front you! Open a store on his dime and they'll steal from you, but you can juts ask Prickster for more money that he is hiding from the Feds.
How could all of those stores leave? I'm confused. They live in a food desert. They have save a lot in Evanston and it's a way better community then Englewood. They didn't even shop at the whole foods at that location. That's partly way they closed down. They're fighting the wrong damn battle. They need to worry about the crime and why certain stores don't want to go into those communities instead biting a hand that wants to fed and employ you.

Oh by the way most Americans don't actually know this cuz they don't actually pay attention to it but ghettos where there's a lot of blacks in Hispanics and people of color they usually have the better stores and they usually have more stores than areas like per save my area I live in in Long Island City Queens we hardly have any grocery stores around here where I live in fact where I live we only have one grocery store that is pretty much for half of the people in my area and there is a lot of people in my area and the prices are not even that great either we pay more money for our food in areas like mine we get less of better things they put all the better stuff in the ghetto and then these people act all privileged and everything and do whatever they can to basically destroy their opportunities that they have I would love to have it Save-A-Lot in my neighborhood because all I have is one little tiny measly urban market and there's like thousands and thousands of people who live in my neighborhood and we only have one little supermarket

The CEO shouldn't have to meet the "demands" of the community. Obviously he knows HOW to run a grocery store. He's a tool for dealing with the outrageous display of hostility. Donate the perishible items to a food bank serving more appreciativ3 clients, take the nonperishibles to their other locations. Let the alderman and the community pull their monies and open a grocery store more to their sensibilities.

@@teebone2157 - yes, a business operates to MAKE money, not to lose it. If the community “demands” something else, the CEO of Sav a Lot should leave and let the community bring in a store to sell the items they want. No doubt there are many grocers who would be happy to open a store there.

I understand their frustration but it’s not save a lots fault. If they run them out of there then they may be left with nothing. Who would they rather have there instead of sav a lot? Because they can’t force Whole Foods to stay in their neighborhood. Just like if they left my neighborhood there would be nothing we could do about that either. Save a lot truly sucks and you only find them in poor neighborhoods. There’s no fresh produce in there literally it’s only good for can goods then you would have to drive out the way or a bus to a jewels or Mariano’s for fresh produce. I understand your right it’s not save a lots fault they are just taking advantage of an opportunity to open another store because it’s a business at the end of the day.

Listen to what that woman says about having control of who works inside the store. Next thing you know, every dollar has to go back to the community and pay for the entire neighborhoods cost of living or money in the residents pockets due to the fact you are in their territory. I must be missing something. No way they going to protest grocery stores closing, then after they finally get one willing to move in, they protest the opening. If that would be the case then I believe their anger would better serve their community by electing politicians who understand that no business can be forced to lose money just so you don't have to shop at a save a lot. Also the balls on this group thinking they better than a save a lot. I don't think I'm too good to shop at a discount grocery store. And if I did, maybe I should put that energy into fixing the structural structures that allow people to steal whatever they want and have no consequences.

I say that Save-A-Lot should just wash their hands of the whole thing and not open at all. Then, let's see if the people can learn to feed themselves.

I believe that Save-A-Lot will open the store just to later write it off as a loss on their taxes. I give them three to six months and then they are out of there.

The average income of a resident of Englewood is $24,000.00 which raises the question, "How many residents could afford to shop at Whole Foods?". The Alderwoman should resign from her office and she could open up the Type of Independent Grocery Store she likes and the community would benefit from. I recently had to fly to visit friends. I ended up having to leave first think in the morning to avoid changing flights in Chicago. And it was well worth the few extra hours travel time to do so.
