Hello my talented friend. A beautiful door design with sliding and wheels. lock iron is also very stylish. Puppies will no longer be able to climb the bypass you did a good job congratulations. See you. Big greetings.
Thanks for stopping by, I am really happy with the design of this gate and it is holding up well. No puppy escapes yet! If you enjoyed the video or found it helpful please do give it a like (or a *"Thanks"* if it REALLY helped!) and if you'd like more content like this feel free to subscribe for regular novice woodworking projects and reviews. Cheers, James
Oh wow! You're the first person I've actually heard make it. I'd love to see yours. Can you send me a picture or two on Facebook, Instagram or James@FixitFingers.com ? That would be awesome 😍
Love the design and love the puppers. I laughed at the 6.06 mark though. That’s why I avoid Phillips head screws. Robertson screws are my choice. 👍🏻 Personally I prefer commentary in vids, however this one was so straightforward it didn’t really require any.
Thanks Rhys, the boys are naughty little buggers, but they are cute as. This was actually my first 'non-talky' build as I was trying something new to keep the time down and for exactly the reason you said that it's an easy one to follow along. Apart from Kreg screws Robertson are hard to come by in the big box here, I might have to look online when my current Phillips supply runs low 😊

Great video James the gate looked like it was much needed, and i love those puppies. As for the non commentary doesn't really bother me either way, whatever you feel like doing that's the best for you to do. Again a great Gate build. Barry (ENG)
Thanks Barry, they are rat bags but darn cute. Trying to strike a balance between information and watchable-ness. Fun to experiment with different video styles.
Lo siento Héctor, esto no se tradujo bien en Google. Creo que preguntaste de dónde saco la madera contrachapada. Esta puerta es un material de cubierta común en Australia. Podrías usar cualquier madera al aire libre local. Espero que esto funcione :)
@@FixitFingers I thought of something similar for a baby gate, but couldn't figure out a good way of keeping it straight against the wall. I think you made it perfect! I hope it keep up with the elements 👍👍
@@TheGrantAlexander me too. Main concerns are the wheels, they are steel but can also be replaced easily, and the Kreg screws as they are only zinc coated. The other hardware is all galvanised so should be sweet...as long as he remembers to oil it each year 😅
@@FixitFingers should be alright, the wheels will be the weak point for sure! My friend made a sliding gate for his house (different design completely) and the wheels only lasted a year (Well one Canadian Winter, so you shouldn't have that problem)
Cheers Ren, been stealing inspiration off the Pask Master Style. People seem to like when I shut my yap so on simple builds I think I'll try this again ;)
Hi there, thank you for uploading such an informative video. I have a question I am trying to get a gate built using decking board wood and they guy came back and said he cannot do it, it is too heavy - what do you think of that and is there a way putting wheels for sliding. Please help!
G'day Shaun, sliding gates are not as common as hinged gates, and yep, hardwood decking is quite heavy over this span, but a wheeled design like mine here should overcome that. It's worked well, only issue is stones and sticks on the wheels path can foul it. You could add a track, or just keep it clean ;) The gate is a bit heavy to slide compared to hinged gate, but doesn't take that much effort.
G'day Paul, no, that was a decking oil I used and would recommend. It soaks into the wood so it wont rub off inside the guide box. I'd avoid using a film finish like polyurethane for this reason.
Better than that, I have a full set of free plans and step-by-step instructions on Instructables :D Click the "Download PDF" button at the top of the page for the plans with full dimensions. www.instructables.com/DIY-Sliding-Deck-Dog-Gate/

@@jmoore4245 good luck with your build! Main warning... if you use hardwood like I did it will be HEAVY 😅 Outdoor grade pine probably a better choice in many instance. Tag me in photos once it is done on my socials, I love to see other folks takes on my builds. Good luck! :D
Very nice job Have you ever looked into the one that has an angle on the slide or a weight or a spring where the door is always under tension and automatically closes I only mention that because I have many dogs and losing a dog is a complete nightmare or keeping certain dogs separated from each other is also somewhat difficult
Hey! This was my first gate build but geez that's a good little idea. It would be tricky on this particular design as the gate is so heavy (and the ground uneven) that the amount of counterweight force needed would be high. I think you'd need a good track on the bottom to run smoother and perhaps use pine or aluminium.
@@FixitFingers I am planning on building a new deck this year with a focus on small dogs if I come up with a good concept I’ll be happy to send it to you
I plan on using your plans and modifying the gate to fit my opening size. How much bigger than the opening does the gate need to be in order for the guide mechanism to work properly?
G'day g'day. I'd say at around 10-15cm (4 to 6") it'd would work fine. I purposely made mine larger to act as a pot plant stand and give it a give more strength.
Yes much cheaper, but for outdoor work I'd avoid it as it doesn't like moisture. Decking planks shouldn't be too expensive and come in the right dimensions. (Apologies my first answer I edited I assumed was for a different video :P)
Thanks Frank. I visited my brother the other day. After a year in the Aussie sun and rain and she's due for a light sand and re-oil but otherwise holding up well.
No, not in this case. The concrete is flat enough and the top guide box keeps it rolling straight. The only annoying bit has been little rocks getting in the way, but then they'd probably foul a guide track too.
Merbau comes from SE Asia and we grow a bit here in Australia too. It is common and cheap here but probably rare in the States and more expensive. It's not that great a material (hard and brittle) but makes great decking. Any decking boards you can get your hands on should be fine for this design.
Fantastic video James, I’m wow 😮impressed with this & you’ve proved just how awesome pocket hole joinery really is. Loving this video format as well 🍻👍👍👍
Thanks Dirk. I will learn "real" joinery as I progress, but this is a practical project and only needs a practical solution. The only thing I think I'll need to keep an eye on is the Kreg screws as they are not galvanised and may get a little wet. I'm hoping as they are buried and oiled I think they'll be fine for a number of years. My goal for my 2nd YT year is to mix up my presentations a bit with the odd "Quick" video and "silent builds" like this to break up the chatter ;)
That gate is about 1.1m (3.5 feet) wide. That design could probably be adapted to go wider, you're just going to need an extra vertical brace at the back and an extra wheel . It's pretty heavy though in hardwood, a 2m / 6ft gate would be getting close to the limit I think.
G'day mate. No bottom track on this design. Here are the step by step instructions and plans if you're going to build one similar - www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Sliding-Deck-Dog-Gate
How do you mean "other side" Jose? It's a very sturdy gate. Very little flex and it's all screwed together so one face is just as solid as the other. The picture in the thumbnail is the "Show Side" the back doesn't look as pretty but most gates suffer from this design.
Argh ok, yes. The catch could be beefed up for sure, but as it only needs to stop the puppies and at the time a 3 year old boy, the catch was not super important. (The weight of the gate alone would almost have worked. You could easily strengthen this aspect of it. Cheers for the feedback!
Don't let the pros hear you praising the use of pocketholes ;) hahahaha Thanks mate, came out really well. My brother has now sold the house so I can't check it any more but last I saw it after about 3 years installed it was holding up really well. Cheers!

No, not really. The good thing about that finish is an oil, not a film, so it doesn't scratch off, it soaks in.

You need to reapply it every so often (especially if it sees a lot of sun) but it only takes a quick light sand and bam, good for another year or two.
