Thank you for explaining the science of the construction. For those of us learning via RUclips, that helps us transfer principles to other projects. This is one more reason why you're an invaluable teacher.
April is indeed a great teacher. I am an engineer and I was a teacher myself. I think it takes three things to make a good teacher: love to learn, love to pass on knowledge and respect your students. Three qualities that April has and that’s why I put her in my top 5 makers.
Great tips! One thing I would like to mention is that for a sliding gate, the floor/ground needs to be level side to side in order for the gate wheels to make contact with the ground as it slides.
The best tip for any building project that I can think of is for April to come to your place and build it for you. That way you know it'll be done properly.
The best way I remembered what direction to put a diagonal post is by thinking of a hanging shelf. Unless they're one of the "floating" ones then they typically have a bar or some sort of decor running from the bottom of the shelf (along the wall) up to the edge of the self to prevent it from flopping down and flat against the wall. That diagonal brace will serve the same purpose in keeping the entire gate elevated and not flopped.
Good looking gate. Great explanation of gate bracing. It's so obvious it seems a wonder to me that you have to explain it. But over and over I see it done wrong. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Not all Viewers are skilled Builders and Makers. Some are Beginners or have never built anything yet, but still want to learn for when they start. I love passing along information to help shorten the curve for folks. Thanks for watching.
This is wonderful. I have a toddler and don't want her to fall off of the porch. I'll be trying this out. Hopefully its not to expensive and as easy as you made it look.😊❤
Great job and fantastic information again April. Keeping those gates operating is a must and makes life outdoors so much better. Thanks for sharing. OLD DAWG DREAMING Fred.
@@AprilWilkersonthank you so much! We need an automated gate and you have given me an option I had not thought of. We currently have a wood gate so building a wood frame with decorative poles would look great!
Yay...I just found out that the frame I did for my gate when I redid it two years ago is wrong. I put the brace going the wrong way and yes it has been sagging. Looks like I have a new project for when the weather cools down some.
I watched your video hoping to get some hints to design two 20' steel gates that slide together to block a 40' fiend entrance. We can't use swing gates because they would swing out into the roadway or into crops in the field.
I like that sliding gate! I’d love to redo the posts and railing on my front porch and put a gate like that on it to block the steps so my dog can lay out there without worry that she’ll run off when someone walks by
I tried one of those turnbuckle anti-sag lift kits and it didn't work at all. As I tightened it instead of lifting the sagging gate, it simply warped the gate. I fixed the problem by designing, building, and installing an adjustable spacer that goes into the gap between the lower gate hinge and the gate post. Problem solved.
April, do you have advice on how to change a worn out wheel replacement for a heavy welded sliding gate. I am paralysed by over thinking this. The squealing reminds me!
Hello April, Did you buy the Pylex products online or in a store. I’m in NE Texas and can’t find them anywhere. They have a lot of really useful stuff. If you would let me know I’d appreciate it. By the way, y’all did an awesome job on that giant deck build!
Personally, I admire the progress you’ve made. Happy to see that you are well surrounded and that you have been able to stay yourself. Keep on going the great job. Cheers from Belgium.
Gates are hard. One thing I've learned is that a gate you build from wood will beat a cheap metal gate from a big box store any day, just because you can repair and adjust it as needed.
Having built more fences than I care to mention, the only suggestion to your viewers is always always always layout existing or planned seating, utilities, barbeque, etc. placement before you decide on gates. Gate placement and direction of opening is one of those things that really stinks to redo.
A rolling gate will be more better than an acordeon door gate to hold my dog to avoid get out and being hit by a car accidently. I will take note to build one.
You have evpensive tools in your workshop and making stuff what everyone can do with accu drill and handsaw. Make something more creative instead of explaining obvious things and buying half product's. In the past you were inspiration but currently I wouldn't say that
I have always built what I need and want, bringing a camera along showing what I did, what I used and why. Many of my Viewers are still learning and are not skilled Builders or Makers. I enjoy passing along information but sure is hard to please everyone. Some want more complicated builds and feel I'm being lazy or slacking when doing something they feel everyone should already know. Others, complain projects are too complex and want a more simple project because they are Beginners. If my channel no longer suits you, no hard feelings. Thanks for watching.
@@AprilWilkerson No, it's not my point, when I say creative I don't have in mind something complex or big but before you were showing whole process, and have built a lot of interesting sometimes helpful and even small things.

Hell, I'm gonna be 71 in 2 months. Everything I've got is sagging, including the gate. 🤣
Lol

You are amazing, April! What beautiful work you do. And you WELD, too?!?! Thanks for the video ~

Great information April! Especially the rolling gate option! Very nice instructions and a viable solution!
Glad it was helpful!

Ahhh sunny day and April giving tips and teaching .... true happyness
It looks very nice. Thank you for your inputs. I would like to know where can I order these metals and parts for the stairs.
Awesome, easy to remember tip on how to place a brace on a gate April! 👏👍😃
Glad it was helpful!
A lot to think about in this video. Well Done April! Plus, it was a nice unexpected surprise to see your new video on a Friday night! 😃👍👏

Awesome job April! 😃👍🏻👊🏻
Nice I like that gate design! Thanks for sharing! Have a wonderful weekend 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
I love the sliding gate option. Once built, can you add automated gate kit?
You certainly could, but I have no desire to change it. Thanks for watching.

A half lap X brace also works well.
Exactly what we are looking for!

Thanks! I agree!!
where can i find the list of products you used? thanks
This is awesome but how can you do that with a spot that doesn’t have cement or smooth surfaces
I've always wondered if you ever put in fences to meet up with your property gates. 🙂
Do you have plans for plain Adirondack chairs, not a rocker style?
Yes, my website offers a Folding Ad Chair (folds up for easy storage) or a Rocking Ad Chair. Thanks for watching.

Keep in mind too that a compression angle brace needs to be inside of 45 degrees or it's also ineffective.
Wait, what ?
I’ve found that using cedar vs pressure treated when building gates really reduces the weight which also helps reduce sag.
well done

Why is the turnbuckle installed in tension not compression? At 1 min 30 seconds
NICE !

Ya, put a header between the two posts so you can do the limbo when you pass through it.

Not a fan of the gate being much bigger than the opening
