Genmitsu L8 - Great Laser With Enclosed Safety

- In this video, I will introduce you to the new Genmitsu L8. It provides everything you would ever want in a laser and wraps it in a safe, high-quality enclosure that will look great in any workshop. Best of all, it is priced right, so it won't break the bank.
Good diode lasers are plentiful and cheap, but great diode lasers come along far less often. What makes a great laser? It needs to be built solid, like a CNC, and must have ample power. It needs to be enclosed for safety but easy to raise for taller projects. It needs all of the conveniences of a modern laser, such as limit switches, a honeycomb workspace, and an integrated camera. That's a tall order, but there is one laser that meets these requirements.
NOTE: After publishing this video, Sainsmart clarified the dimensions of the 20W beam spot. While I list it as 0.08mmx0.1mm, it is actually 0.07mmx0.13mm.

Great review!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great review/demo. Love the honesty 💜 Sorry I had to miss the rest of the live tonight. You guys are great and very knowledgeable. Appreciate ya
No worries! Thanks for coming out. Unfortunately I drew your name for Daniel’s box and you weren’t there ☹️
@@SteveMakesEverything Yeah I saw that when I finished it later 😥 I had to take a break from the screen 🤕 Felt so bad leaving like that and was enjoying the discussion so much! Daniel is awesome and sending me something anyway 🥰🤗🙏🏼😇 Have a wonderful day!
@@katspeace5550 Cool!
Nice video
Thanks!
Great review as usual. But I'm going to get myself in so much trouble if I keep watching laser videos. Lol
I just picked up the 40w version. I have a 10w ortur, but yea I want to do alot of thicker cutting wood. and the 10w just wont do it. exelent for engraving.
Keep me posted!
Hi Steve, does your x1 rotary tool have a 4 pin wiring harness? I ordered the ikier r1 as it seemed like a really nice unit, it advertises 99.5% compatibility but the harness options are all 6 pin....Yours appeared to connect directly in....
The end that plus into the stepper motor is always six pin, but the other end of the cable is typically 4 pin
@@SteveMakesEverything odd, the two cables that came with the ikier were 6x6... ??, back to the manufacturer it went... easier than rewiring. thank you!
From the cut test, it seem the dot size is very large. Is it true?
No, it’s comparable to other lasers. I tend to use a larger interval, which will make it look this way, but it’s faster
L8 vs Falcon 2 Pro, any strong opinion ? Thanks.
I assume you are looking at the Falcon 2 Pro since it's a closer match. If you are looking at the Falcon 2 then I'd pick the L8 because it's safer. The L8 is faster, but the work area of the Falcon 2 Pro is better (I mean the bed not the size)
Nice unit. You have it labeled at 40k mm/s though, its actually 40k mm/min.
Well darn!☹️. You’re certainly correct
Steve, do you happen to know how to switch out the 20W module with the 40W module. I purchased the 20W L8 3 weeks ago and and I ordered and just now received the 40w laser module - but even though the 40w slides easily into the base unit, the laser is bigger and there is no way that the little red tightener for the 20w would fit it. Any Ideas as to how I can get it installed?
I haven’t see. The 40W. Erosion of this laser but it should be a simple process to just turn the latch of the laser mount to release the module and then slide the 40w module lit and tighten the latch. Are you saying it doesn’t fit?
@@SteveMakesEverything Yes, the 20w is 2 1/2" square and the 40w is closer to 3" square
@@drogersusa It should still fit. There's a dovetail that the laser module slides into.
@@SteveMakesEverything Steve, it slides into the "dovetail" very easily, but it is a 1/2" larger than the 20w laser - so the little lever that you use to tighten the 20w laser in place is to short for the larger 40w, leaving nothing to tighten the 40w laser in place.
@@drogersusa Ah, that seems like something the company should be addressing. Have you asked them about it?
I just wouldn’t go back to a diode ever !
It’s not generally a case of one laser vs the other. Each type of laser is adept at certain things. You aren’t cutting 20mm wood with a CO2 laser without turning it into charcoal and you won’t cut the thinnest piece of paper with the most powerful fibre laser. There are definitely places where a diode laser is the best tool.
@@SteveMakesEverything I agree, I just wouldn’t go back to a diode laser as it’s terribly slow also I don’t really need to cut wood at great depths, with the dot size I have different focal lens/ compounds lenses which give great or even better dot sizes.
@@CreatureCribs Yep, I hear you. Sounds like you've found the right path for yourself.
In no way worth 1k. It's only 20w, and those panels arent rated so i wouldnt trust them at all.
Well it’s less than $1000 but compare it to other diode lasers. The Roly Lasermatic 20W costs quite a bit more and the AlgoLaser Delta is about the same cost without the enclosure.
Btw this is rated as a class 1 laser, so while you might not like the enclosure, it clearly works.
It comes with a camera, enclosure, honeycomb cutting platform, air assist and an exhaust fan. The only thing this machine doesn't have, is the ability to increase its size. I feel like this is one of the best machines in the price range. I dare you to find a comparable one for the same price. Other machines are going to cost at least 1k if you add those add-ons.
@@Kennebec27 Yes, and as far as increasing size, it does have those built-in risers, and it is trivial to put the entire laser on blocks and work on anything that's taller than the laser. That wouldn't be easy with something like a Roly and some of the other enclosed lasers.
