You know, l thought about it and actually I think l would be surprised if Russell didn't speak French, being a devotee of French cinema, and women, one assumes. I recently saw an Orson Welles doc where he is asked a question in French and starts jabbering away...and l think l registered zero surprise.
Dear Pete Jones: I loved Sparks' creativity back in the day. I'm tearing up, knowing they are still around looking vibrant, strong, zestful, and still making music.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke. Two dozen artists who are influential, groundbreaking and talented deserve to be there - Sparks is just one example. Meanwhile "artists" who are mostly famous for being famous or their "legendary music videos", who never composed a single song or who made their name from covers of other artists are in it. Btw, last I heard who gets inducted in the rock and roll "Hall of Fame" is mostly a *public vote* (!!). Well, no wonder then that some get inducted for being "familiar names" while others who truly made their own mark, broke their own ground and were cited as an important influence to others are/were overlooked.
Giving a speech in French (which he does speak fluently but isn't his first language) must have been pretty nervewracking in front of so many people. Fair play to him, he's a great man.
Aha, I was not too far behind you: I was nine when I first heard 'This town ain't big enough...' on the radio (1974), and it blew apart my whole concept of what a song can be. (That song still blows me away.) I dragged my parents straight out to buy the new Kimono album.
I saw Sparks live about a month ago and Russell said something that struck Ron as funny, and he not only smiled, but was laughing joyously. It was worth the ticket price just to see that. Such an interesting man. And Russell too. How many brothers do you know of that have been that close their entire lives, and became legends at the same time? Quite a story, those two! We will not see their like again, as it is said.
Yes, this really means a lot to them. I'm so happy to see them finally get something they have deserved and wanted for many many years! Hard work persistance and integricy sometimes pays off! 💪👌🙏
Anything is better than an Oscar, except for "Best Foreign Film". Americans think everything we do is best, which l hope is a disappearing illusion.....like baseball's World Series...it is only American teams! A Japanese team would probably kick the merde out of them!
I am impressed by Russell's ability to accept this in French. I'm Canadian and could not come close. I can read the French on the cereal box and that's about it.
And now Sparks fans, we have a new pronunciation-Ron and Russell Myell! Congratulations -this long time fan is very happy for you and your patience and diligence is paying off! Russell-I am very impressed with your Francais and I am sure Edith Piaf feels the same :-)
It’s all coming together in the most SPARKS way of all. A lot of lifetime achievement awards coming just as that title or given out to the new project, as actors who the academy feel guilty about will hand out the award to whatever he or she is in this year. I’ve always dream NT if them doing something with the UCLA bruins, an at the rose bowl HT show but HT at thee rose bowl game on January 1 featuring the bruins or really any match up would be too good. All these years a fan and never knew that Todd Rundgren was a part of the sparks saga way before anyone could’ve have guessed it would be one. Then to work again 50 years later? That has to be a first for an artist/producer in any genre anywhere in the world. I was talking to Bingenhiemer years ago at a Lush show in the parking lot and a car is blasting “cool places” and he tells me Andy Warhol was a massive sparks fan and I tell him I read somewhere he thought blondie was the best group ever, and he says the go go’s and blondie, really hard to tell, and that blondie didn’t have Charlotte or Jane in their band, they had other GUYS, and “you have to remember the bangles too”. I remember this verbatim stuff cus it’s like he’s doing a radio show for just my gf and I in the parking lot. Biggest sparks regret is I was at a job hard to get away from and I couldn’t go to the album I wanted to for the 21 NIGHTS 21 ALBUMS thing so I didn’t go to the one I could get there for. They are the band that people don’t mind like talking for hours about, I mean there’s so much and so many like little factoid things every fan knows that nobody else knows. The genius and longevity is just unnatural .
La musique est géniale, le film est extraordinaire, les acteurs sont sublimes, le réalisateur est magnifique... enfin, allez le voir, quoi. Et surtout, écoutez SPARKS (les frères Mael)!!!
Contain. That. Emotion. Not only is Sparks basking in the glory of their 5 Césars (no Annette without R & R) -- their entire international fanbase is! The dedicated professionals of the team were duly rewarded. Is the absent Leos Carax getting a bit blasé? Cannes, Hamburg, Lumières, César -- who can keep count?
My French Teacher at High School said " Alan you have the best French accent in the class, it's just a shame you can't speak the language " Laughter at my expense. I think I laughed as well. Russell's French was par excellence. Ron should never talk, just stare.
Ron never speaks unless he has something important to say. I saw them in March and at the end Russell was doing the "thank you all" thing and everyone was cheering. He handed the mic to Ron and 3000 people were instantly silent. He gave us a very heartfelt thank you for our support of the band over the years and how much it meant to them (him). There were a few moist eyes in the crowd.
Ah...remember them from 70es..." Kimono my house" They were in front of the time..... This town is not big for the bouth of us.......... Apsolutly deserved1🙂👌🌞🍀💯🎶🏖 🖖 Speaking French......so 🕊🌹
Could the translator have let Ron speak? She jumped in after 5 words, before he even finished the joke. Those who speak french, did she at least translate all the rest, which we could not hear from Ron himself? One of my big gripes with non-Nordic European countries is that they just can't seem to teach people English in schools, and they even dub foreign films into their own language, which is extremely disrespectful. The majority of French citizens, for example, have never heard the actual performances of their favorite Hollywood actors, which is ridiculous.
in 15 to 20 years there will be no real good quality groups left, they're all dying off and the replacements are woeful and at best only worth listening to while you do your shopping, IMO, disagree if you wish but I'm right,
Didn’t understand a word, watched it all the way through. Legends.
Russell knowing how to speak French is the most Sparks thing ever.
More Sparks class, as always.

so schauts aus
One offs. 👏🎼
AFAIK the two brothers were 76 and 73 years old at the time of this ceremony ... would be wonderful if all of us could age that well.
Spark, congratulations on the award, the group definitely deserves it
I still love these two brothers they have such wonderful talent and still going strong
Dear Pete Jones: I loved Sparks' creativity back in the day. I'm tearing up, knowing they are still around looking vibrant, strong, zestful, and still making music.
These guys need to be inducted into the rock and roll Hall of Fame

Russell seemed a bit nervous but they’re both obviously very moved by the award. Well deserved. Lovely blokes. ❤️

SPARKS! still creative and making wonderful music in their 70's ... God Bless these brothers!
So wonderful after all these years since I bought the first Sparks album in 1971.

So much more prestigious than winning a Grammy or an Oscar. These two hard working men deserve this award.
They have such French influences at times in their art. So happy for both of these gentlemen.
I am SO happy for the Maels I could just about burst! Yay boys!!
Ron was obviously moved. Are you related to Mark Romanek? If so tell him l am a big fan of his work.
@@Rupert14 No, but I wish I was!

Still making arresting, creative new music after more than 50 years! Seeing them get the recognition they've long deserved warms the heart.
I love these two men. Utterly beautiful souls ❤️
I love them so much! Their music is out of this world. And "annette" soundtrack proves it again 💕

So Sparks, winning an award in France. We’ll done France. Here in the boring, grey UK, don’t recognise originality if it bit them in the arse!
