No matter how hard of a day i have, when James uploads it instantly becomes better!
I have gardened for years, but this year, I redesigned my garden with 4x4 square foot beds. Then, in May, I looked up square foot gardening and found your video. I am growing plants vertically more than in the past. I followed your advice about pulling unproductive late summer veggies and planting fall crops. All I can say is, the garden is yielding SO MUCH food. I had so many cucumbers (and a few more coming yet, and maybe another crop), and the tomatoes have done so well. I have large cabbages out there too. We had big delicious cantaloupes. I had to learn how to can, and my freezer is stuffed. Square foot gardening is a game changer.
James and Tuck…..
out of ALL of the gardening videos on RUclips, YOU have helped and inspired me the most!!!
When others have tried to give me advice or correct me on how to care for my garden, I refer them to your methods. Your enthusiasm, expertise, joy of gardening and, of course, Tuck’s 💚example of how good your vegetables are, 😉make such a difference.
Thank you so much!

Same for me
@@rosebrown5256 And me too!!!!
🎉🎉🎉🎉
Agreed!
I've been practicing SFT for 15 or 20 years.
I grow in raised beds of varying dimensions and shapes. Over time, I learned how to sow my seeds and plant my seedlings without precisely measuring each square foot. It is amazing how many vegetables you can grow in such small spaces.
Next level: hügelkultur...
Your enthusiasm for growing is infectious, James! ❤❤❤❤❤ to the Tuckmiester!
I just discovered SFG and am so excited to begin. I quit gardening many years ago due to lack of time. I'm retired now and am ready to begin again. I am a planner and my DR table is covered with grid paper and charts. I have access to good aged manure from my son's farm. Now I will pray for good rains!
❤Tuck❤ I think the square foot gardening will be perfect for my Urban Garden, thanks!
Thank you, Mel Bartholomew.
His daughter recently reached out to me and she is going to come and tour the garden! I am super excited about it
@@jamesprigioni that's awesome!
We loved watching him on PBS years ago and bought one of his books.
Fantastic, James! He was such a revolutionary at the time. Now you are bringing it forth again, keeping the old wisdom and adding your own wisdom on top of it!
Love to you and your channel, thank you immensely for all you do to advise & season us as gardeners - can't wait to see her visiting😀
Amen! Such a brilliant and efficient method!
What a beautiful garden! But Tuck is the true star of the show! ❤
Lots of great tips James and crew!
- Wood and space is a premium. We reused our old patio "Crazy paving" slabs to build out main bed. Sometimes to build a box you have to think outside of it.
- Google sheets is a great free planner to record planting times and tabs allow you to record notes like weather, etc, which can help you the following year.
- Free printable graph paper also allows you to draw you garden to scale to plan your space for your specific areas
- Find a branch and mark measurements to eye ball you spacings
- Branches on their own also make great stakes for plants. Branch cuttings are great for pre filling taller raised beds.
- There is always something that can be reused before recycling
- When a weed becomes a weed. Dandelions are early bloomers to attract wildlife. Remove the head when the flower dies to prevent spreading. Over wintered turnips wanted to be a plant, so they were another early bloom. Don't ignore hedges for birds. Reberis flowers in May so not only attracts pollinators but later on is alt food for birds.
I'd personally never buy wood and do raised beds. Ya branches are superior; branches and stumps bring in beneficial insects, etc. This whole thing can be scrapped for a pile for hugelkultur. It also solves the problem of needing to be watered. The weeds can chop and drop to maintain a mulch.
With Tuck’s skills and supervision, we are all growing better harvests. Thanks Little Boss ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I used to watch SFG show on PBS 40 years ago. It always made so much sense to me! You explain it so well for the newcomers!!
Your love of gardening comes through every time! Have the book and used first time last year- worked well… added more beds and trellises. Weather has been cold in MA but I’m optimistic. PS I have my own “Tucker” who guards MY garden - looks just like the emoji 🐶!!

Love seeing your videos in my notifications gets me amped to get out and garden !!!you rock brother and tuck is definitely the boss and the cutest he looks nice and healthy for his age to treasure every minute you all spend in the garden together.have a great day and keep up the amazing work
I really enjoyed this video. I am a new Gardner, last year was my first year growing anything ever. I was a hot mess. We had a huge flood that ruined everything except my green beans and a few tomatoes I had in pots. I didn't give up, I had some seeds in trays and started over. It was later in the season, but I got so many tomatoes, a few peppers and about 2 meals worth of greenbeans. This year I moved all my raised beds to higher ground. Buy this video has helped me figure out what I need to do as far as planting. I love the square foot method of gardening I will be using this in all my beds. Thanks for always having great content.
SFG is how I started in 2020. And it’ll be the only way I grow. I’m an urban gardener so it perfect for me. ❤SFG. And ❤❤❤❤❤Tuck!!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Tuck, we love you!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
James, I highly recommend that you try the Whole Foods recipe for Red Lentils & Spinach Soup. It calls for 2 cups of spinach but I used 4 cups. Uses up my spinach so I don't waste any as I follow the Charles Dowding method of harvesting the outer leaves. My homegrown Olympia spinach leaves are tender even when they are larger. Even my non vegetarian friends love this soup! Really enjoy your channel. Thanks for all the joy you & Tuck bring to me.
I just love Tuck!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Thank you James. We really get a lot of valuable information from
your videos. Please keep them coming.
I’ve been gardening for decades and never tried this method, starting this year and bought the book 😊 also, I am still amazed at the variety of veggies that tuck loves . Love what you’re doing James keep up the good work ❤
I’m doing this in my garden! Thank you for all the useful info. I feel more confident in planting radishes with my small pepper plants❤️love for Tuck❤️
Great job showing the benefits of Sq. Ft. Gardening! Love your enthusiasm! Tuck is adorable ❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Tuck is absolutely the garden boss and nutrient expert!
Awww! Little Tucky sniffing around ❤🎉🧡💜💙💚🤎💚🧡❤💛🧡💙💚
This is the best gardening video I've seen maybe....ever. So efficient, so real-life, so accessible. Many of us cannot replicate what we see on many gardening videos, but this is perfect for us all. Thanks!
I always enjoy seeing Tuck sharing your garden time with you...
We are trying square foot gardening in conjunction with SIP planters this year…… 🤞🤞it works out as well as we are hoping for. So far it’s doing very well!
In the SFG method, we recommend only using compost to supply the nutrients after a harvest. No reason to use a “all purpose fertilizer.”
So excited to watch another video, Thanks so much for all the info. Can't wait to start my own food forest!
Let's Gooo Michael! You are welcome my friend

Thank you for sharing your knowledge in gardening! I'm a fan of your channel. 👋👋👋👍
Another wonderful video! It’s rainy today but I’m getting back out in the garden tomorrow! Can’t wait to try out square foot gardening this year!
I agree- i Love Square foot gardening!
If you ever want to sell some extra tomato plants I’d rather buy from you than a box store
Thank you for ALL of this gardening information . I'm
Starting a raised bed garden and I'm really nervous. Your video put me at ease 😊
I love your energy!!
I am using many of your videos for my gardening class and I have also linked your videos on my website for the class. I appreciate you!
Absolutely love it!! Am currently reading that book and Mel's mix is gold! ❤❤❤ For the BOSS🐶
This is a great delve into square foot gardening. I"ve been gardening for most of my long adult life, but have only just begun a bed using this method. During one of your garden tours I saw how well your square foot beds were doing and so thought i"d try it out. Lots of good tips in this video to help me take it to other garden beds. Thanks James and Tuck!!
❤❤❤ thanks James and Tuck! 💚 💚 💚
I appreciate how simply you explain and demo square foot gardening - which is a good way to break our of the mono- culture model.
Love your enthusiasm, James! Thanks for producing such high quality content!
I moved to New Jersey last year and finally have a garden bed ready to start planting. I’ve always loved flower beds and do well with them, but this will be my first veggie/herb/fruit garden. Thank you for the videos. They are really helpful. I would love a video showing your garden journal. How you have it laid out and how you track everything.
I love square foot gardening! It helped (and helps) me make the most out of a fairly small growing space. Especially when first starting out. ❤
I needed these reminders for the raised beds. Awesome!
I made a square foot garden bed in my garden after watching your video! Looking at how much I can actually plant just blew my mind. I can totally see your excitement of using this square foot gardening method and I can’t wait to feel the same with all the great advantages I will experience!
Hi James, i am so inlove with your garden. I wish you health and strength to continue doing gardening😍❤🙏😂🇯🇲
There was a SFG show on PBS a few decades ago and I bought Mel's book (white cover) back then. We used his method in parts of our garden and it was great. It's very interesting to see the different raised bed ways to use it. Thanks to you and Tucker. ❤
I like how passionate you are when you are talking about your gardening experience . Good work!
Such a helpful video as always! Your content has changed my gardening game for the better. 😊 ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️s for Tuck!
Let's Gooo Hillary! Me and Tuck are glad to hear that, we want you to work less and harvest more!
Love tuck and will be sharing this with my friends.
Thank you for sharing
Let's Goo Augustine Kopa! Thanks for the kind words and support 😁🐕❤️
I got some raised beds this year and they actually came with the square foot grid. I have the book too so I am excited to get my summer garden in this year. I have the best starts I have ever had this year and it's making me so ecstatic!
Great video! You've inspired me to reimagine my garden beds this year! I was struggling of where to put what yesterday, now I think I'm going to mix things up this year! Thanks from NJ!
Keeping the Garden State green! 😎
Excellent Video James ! I think one of your best ! Very good info ! and Thanks for keeping me inspired to keep gardening 😊👍🌻🌳🌱🍅🌽🥒🫑🌶🍑🍓🫛🥬🥦🍆🥕🧄🧅😃
I have been using square foot gardening for close to 20 years, so glad to hear you talk about it! I am always learning. When I plant a new plant in a square, I just put a shovel full of compost as Mel advocated. I look forward to hearing more tips about the Square Foot Garden. Yours look absolutely beautiful!!😀
I'm going to try that next year . To move away from my big gardening routine. And I love watching your videos because they are so useful.
James, I love watching your videos. You are so helpful and teach me so much about gardening. I must say, my favorite part of watching your videos is watching Tuck! He is such a cutie and is a very good boy! ❤❤❤
Thank you for showing your square foot gardening! I am confused of what to do with my raised beds to get more food this year. This is very helpful! ❤️🙏
Great information. Thanks! I did square foot last year and it worked well. Adding more this year! Tuck is sweet ❤️
We did our first garden this year after watching your channel for 2 years! We did sq ft garden and it’s been AMAZING! Definitely know what it’s like to go outside because of how excited we have been for the garden. Thanks James and Tuck!!!
It sounds like a interesting way to divide up the raised bed for a more productive season. I will keep this in mind for next year.
Love you, Tuck ❤❤❤
Thank you, James!
I have 1/3 of my garden planted out. Thank God that this video reminded me to square foot the rest of it!
Thank you James for such a nice well taught basic succession planting , i have learned a lot watching your video tips on planting, and your cute puppy always bring a smile to my face , I like that tucker hangs out with you ..😂😂😂
Love Tuck!!❤ thank you for all the great info
Good to see the boss keeping you in check for another season 😁
I got into square foot gardening when I returned to Canada from England in 1980 and saw an rpisode of Mel Bartholomew's square foot gardening show on PBS. Watched it every Sunday on PBS. Loved gardening that way. Awesome!
How could one not like Tuck James? He's too cute and the protector of the garden
❤️ James and Tuck my family loves you ❤️ Thank you for the Square Foot Gardening ideas
❤❤❤ Your energy is absolutely inspiring. Thank you.
I'll keep it simple with my garden. Choose 3 vegetables for one bed and plant them in alternate rows.
Square foot garden is good on smaller scale, but with my 200m2 garden it takes too much time.
James you are literally my garden dictionary. I've been watching your videos since 2019 when we got our house. Backyard garden is like my new yoga lol
Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!! I’m so excited to get my garden started!!! Oh and we love Tuck!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love that little cutie Tuck! Thanks for your informative videos.
Thanks Tuck for being such a great garden guard!😊

Love your vids and always gotta amazing beautiful garden
Thanks Moonmann!! 😁🐕❤️
GREAT Video. Wish I had seen this before I planted my garden. I will implement it next year. Thanks again.
I love square foot gardening! I have been doing it for a number of years. It looks pretty and the plants are happy, healthy, not wasted space also means not many weeds! If you combine this with succession planting and wow you can grow lots in a small space! Vertical is definitely the way to go too! It is such a fun way to plant.
Tuck and James, you brighten our day❤
😮 "two to three crops" I love it. I will have so much more food, and with less work!!!
Just discovered you...the enthusiasm is fantastic. Thanks for the inspiration. Going into winter for me and we're going to try creating Hugelkultur beds with square foot planting!!
