    Years ago, I tried a similar exercise on my balcony and window sills in London. I didn't grow anything like 580kg, but I did get up to 83kg, which didn't seem too bad from a small bit of concrete. I now grow in containers in a concrete front yard in the Newcastle upon Tyne - and you are inspiring me to measure the harvest again!

    Huw this is exactly where we are at giving all the economic uncertainty out there, is to use a little space as possible to grow as much food as can be done, with as little effort as and inputs as we can get away with. Integrated, organized yet flexible, year-round production, maximum maintained fertility, large variety of crops, and of course grown organically based upon natural principles old and new. We are just pushing the edge as hard as we can to really come up with a consistent and repeatable system of production each year. There is much pioneer work to do and I am so excited for what's ahead and where things can go, and breaking new ground. Really love where you are going with this.

      You should check out “Anne of all trades”, and homesteading videos or article. Particularly Amish techniques. I firmly believe you can have what this guy has. Even in Central Texas. I’m still fairly new to this, but I think your answer is going to be lots and lots of mulch. Pardon me if you know all of this. My point is that you’re lucky to live in Texas. I WISH I had your heat. I’m in western Washington. I’m trying to find heat. lol. You just need to find the niche for your area. I’m convinced by my research that anyone can garden anywhere and at anytime and with minimal cost. I always say I was born in the wrong era, however, we are fortunate to have access to all the information we need and crave. It’s out there if you look. My point was to inspire you. I NEVER comment on things. For whatever reason I was drawn to your comment. So I hope I didn’t insult in anyway. Happy Gardening and best of luck to you.

    I've been making moves in my garden all autumn in order to fit in more raised beds. Have depleted my compost supply now so that will need budgeting for this year, although I may try to outsource compost material from some of my neighbours this year......
    Even decided to get rid of dedicated strawberry beds and have replanted them around the edge of the beds instead. My paths were wider than needed so I decided to free up more growing room.
    Mine are only pallet collar sized beds, I now have 16 to manage. I like it this way because I can see to them individually rather than a whole daunting project!
    I pleased to say, thanks to one of your newsletters, I'm also growing an orchard (I now have 5 fruit trees in the garden 😂)
    I'm beginning to use permaculture design ideas in other "rougher" parts of the garden. Becoming a little more creative; Rhubarb now lives in a flower bed creating some ornamental structure instead of taking up space in a veg bed for example.
    My dream is to have a beautiful garden, which is relatively easy for me to maintain around work etc, whilst producing as my food as I can.
    I look forward to the new book and garden, and will backtrack on past videos for now to formulate my plan for next year over the winter.
    Regards and seasons greetings from us, in Kent 👋

    Oh Huw, I am ridiculously excited about this! I'm in North-West England so your sowing and planting dates will really suit my conditions. I'm sharing this video with hubby and hoping for a piece of paper under the tree on Christmas morning. After a good first year, other temporary commitments meant a lot less time at the allotment this year, so I can't wait to follow your advice and make it a really productive space! Congratulations! I'm a long-time subscriber and this is the best thing you've done 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    I really do think reducing one's expectations is a necessity regarding self sufficiency (don't expect fresh tomatoes, courgettes & peppers from December through May...).

    Definitely another Huw book soon to add to my collection. Great effort Huw. Love how you did it on a half size plot. That's exactly what I have. I have adopted alot of your and Charles growing methods but adapting them to my size in a specific plan has been a problem Asim not the best at organising. This would be a great help.

    Love your channel. I live in Arizona in the US and of course our climate is much different than the UK. Can you tell me how much of your book is geared toward the UK climate? I would imagine the planting guide is different, but I would imagine I could benefit from other things especially in the fact that we can grow pretty much year round here in the desert. Thanks again for the great content!

    This might be a really weird hack for me for indoor gardens but I find that if I add at least a dozen worms to a big pot and just add certain things such as egg shells to the soil around my plants, they grow amazing from the natural compost and it's quite self sufficient.

    Looks very interesting. The pressure when gardening is often trying to expand as much as possible to grow as much as you can so this downsizing hopefully shows that less can be more. Less work for enough yield.
    I just wish I had your length of growing season! I’m lucky to get 5 months of non protected growing. Self sufficient gardening in my climate really requires a heated greenhouse.

    • @HuwRichards
      @HuwRichards  11 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks! Having a smaller space means every inch is given a lot more attention, which gets you the yields! I know that this smaller garden is quite a bit more productive than the whole previous garden put together to be honest. Is that 5 months frost free? We are around 6 months frost free if that helps! Best wishes, Huw

    • @popandbob
      @popandbob 11 месяцев назад

      @@HuwRichards 5 Months frost free and 6 months of deep freezes. Overnight temperatures down to -40 are a yearly occurrence. Last year we averaged 2' of snow on the ground (with snow drifts up to 5' deep along my shelterbelt) and had almost a full month below -20 with the entire winter average daytime high -12.
