- Check out this incredible backyard garden that has a massive raised bed for vegetables, 18 productive fruit trees, a tangle of grape vines, and a beautiful pollinator garden. Marc and Aileen are growing such an abundance of food in their yard that they end up sharing and donating a good part of it with friends, family, and food banks.
They moved here three years ago and didn't realize they had all these fruit trees and grapes growing. They quickly caught the farming bug and have transformed their yard into an impressive micro farm in the city.

In this video we take a full tour of the backyard homestead, and we also get to see some of the cool projects they're working on, like a rainwater irrigation system made from free secondhand rain barrels and hoses, a greenhouse built with reclaimed windows, a solar pop can heater, and a tree nursery for community tree planting projects.
Marc and Aileen try to keep the cost of this project down by saving their own seeds, and by using secondhand pots, tools, and wood that they collect from all over the place.
The food they're growing helps keep their grocery bill cost down, and they preserve a lot of their harvest by canning, pickling, dehydrating, and freezing food so that they can eat it year round.
We are super inspired by these two and hope you enjoy taking a peek at what they're up to! You can follow and find out more about their project here:

THIS is how humans are supposed to live!! Absolutely wonderful life you both have. Gives me hope!! Thankyou for simply loving life and making the most out of what you have!!!
I love seeing gardens like this because they show that it is possible even with a smaller backyard! ❤
Its really awesome that Marc and Aileen not only put the effort to feed themselves but provide for their community. Food and water is life, and nothing shows that you love your fellow man than sharing a seat at a dinner table
Astonishing what a backyard can do with lots of work, focus and obviously a whole lotta love!
Amazing, beautiful and fantastic! What a great example of what can be done by reusing materials rather than buying new. This is the future, now. Thank you for showing it to us!
You're right! It was fascinating to see the resourcefulness and creativity! Thanks for your comment :)
I LOVE THESE PEOPLE! They're building community, between the sharing that they do with people they know, and people they will never meet. All of the challenges we expect, and likely all of the ones we don't know enough to predict, will be more survivable and even enjoyable when we are acting in cooperation with each other.
Their unity as a couple really shines in the garden😊😊😊
It's so nice to see this being done in Ontario. We have so much potential here, yet there are so few who actually do it. Yes, it IS a lot of work - even growing just a few vegetables. And this year the rainfall was so crazy that just keeping up with the weeds can be a challenge. Kudos to Marc and Aileen! Well done. It is a labour of love, and wonderful that you share your harvest. This is why people need to live in community, so we can not only share the bounty but the workload!
This man is a keeper! Laughs at his own jokes, built stuff out of junk, tends the tomatoes ❤
Please do a feature on this farm again!!
Yeah his excitement and enjoyment of these projects is so fun to see!
And she isn't..?
@@TheSnuffy1994 right?
Yes…would love to see more of this farm
This has been extremely refreshing to watch. While the farmer's market dream is still in the parking lot, it's great to hear about your active involvement in helping out local food banks -- especially at a time like this. All the very best!
Love this so much!!! They do it on the cheap which makes it seem possible for anyone with a sunny yard.
What a lot of work! 😮
I love the sheds (very pretty and creative) and the cans air-warming system for the greenhouse.
I'm surprised that no trees were planted to block the view of the neighbour's houses.
That is truly impressive! And I'm sure it IS a lot of work! What a wonderful backyard farm they've created!
Can relate, shoveled 20 yards with two 5 gallon buckets when I built my garden 3 years ago. It was an experience I will never forget.
Outstanding! Love repurposing and being frugal.
What an amazing and charming couple. It's interesting that they had this blank slate of a backyard and what they've been able to accomplish with it.
This is like being back in the 70's and 80's, when backyard gardens were the norm and not the exception. Our North American culture has sadly disposed of gardens with the availability of all things fast food, so this is refreshing to see this type of living making a comeback.
I can not love this enough!
The creativity is off the charts!
What fun! We live like this, although we have far fewer resources, and consume everything we produce. A lot of great ideas, which they generously shared. I wish more people where we live used their land to sustain life in this way, so far we are one of the three or four in the area that have a food garden on our urban property.
00:10 - Love how you started with the basics of urban farming! Makes it so approachable for beginners. 🌱
This backyard farm is on another level! Love all of the recycled pots and lumber. Thank you for the tour Marc and Aileen.❤❤
Holy cow, that's a serious garden! Hidden Harvest, what a brilliant way to share all that abundance. Great job M+D & M+A! 😆👏🏼
I absolutely LOVE your backyard garden and orchard 💜 happy growing 💜
This makes so emotional and happy.. I will build this for myself one day
That is incredible.
I recently bought a 3rd of an acre and have wondered if I could do a micro farm on it so to see them have so much wild from just an 8th of an acre so so encouraging!
Thanks for watching and best of luck growing food on your micro farm!
@@ExploringAlternatives thank you! ❤️ I’m just one person and I’m disabled so I’m not sure if I can do as much as these guys do,… it’s pretty intimidating but I’m trying to learn
For sure the scale of what Marc and Aileen are doing is pretty intimidating but I'm sure you could get the satisfaction of growing food in a much smaller garden. Starting small is a great way to learn and see if it's something you want to keep doing moving forward :)
Really glad this became a production, on RUclips too* Bravo Marc and Aileen, really smart. I watched the shed being built on FB, the gardening, but never realized the scope and wonder of it all. Creative happy people make life interesting, fun, and inspiring. Thanks 'Exploring Alternatives' for producing a fine film.
We were also really impressed seeing everything in person! It's pretty amazing how much they've done in 3 years! Thanks for checking out the video :)
This is lovely.
Our garden starts well each year, then the rabbits, moles, voles, chipmunks and who knows what else starts destroying the plants.
We’ll have to try the owls on posts.
Funny thing is we actually do have real owls that we hear every night.
Amazing! What a useful way of living, sharing with community and create a real interest in sustainable food production. Unlimited possibilities. Thanks for the movie and congratulations to your team.
Thanks so much, happy you enjoyed the video :)
You guys are amazing! There are countless many people who could try this with their yards and experience the joy and the health that it brings! You can even plant a garden on a balcony or a small patio! Thank you for sharing your story and inspiring others, and thank you Exploring Alternatives for sharing their story!
It's very true! Growing food, even if it's just a small amount, is super rewarding! Thanks for your comment and hope you're both enjoying the summer :)
@@ExploringAlternatives thank you! Yes we are. It’s been a great summer!
Now all you need is bees for honey!
Congrats Marc and Aileen! Beautiful garden. I am going through a similar experience and every day is a new discovery. Lots of work, but hey, no need to go to the gym!
Thanks so much for watching, Line! Hope you’re having a great summer in the garden 🪴 🤗
Now this is how EVERYONE should be living. Wow! Thanks for sharing 🌻
Dream neighbors...I love these two!
Congratulations! Your hard work is obvious. Be well. ❤
I'm jealous of this couple's neighbors.
What a great foodyard. Love this!
Thanks for checking out the video Derek, hope you're doing good :)
My husband and I have almost the same setup. Minus the fruit trees. All my neighbors are watering grass. Such a waste of space and water. Love your setup!
Pretty sweet Marc and Aileen. Only 3 years deep and already lots of good knowledge to share. it's a ton of work but the rewards.. oh so tasty! thx for the vid!
Super cool set up. I have a large vege garden but only spend an hour or so a week which is mainly harvesting. No dig layered garden with mulch stops weeds then have a proper tap timer for water. Can go away for a week or so at a time. Get the odd courgette to marrow or woody bean pods etc but I collect of my own seed so it works out. My challenge is storing food. You guys are doing well. This year I’m freezing corn straight from plant with leaves on etc as gear that stores well
This yard is incredible! A large garden plus room for other activities. Great job to these two!
Very good. What a really nice couple. The artistic touch runs through the place. Its beautiful.
instead of using "landscaping fabric" which is plastic that might contain PFOS and other plastic additives, you can use organic mulch like small rocks, grated coconut, coconut husk, etc. That way you dont contaminate your soil n plants with microplastic as those plastic garden fabric Photodegrade overtime.
Really shows that you need a community to make it work well. And how you can make one. I love trading and recycling.
You can call it "trashy" if you want but you can tell just how happy they are compared to if they just mowed it and focused on their main jobs for the rest of there lives. It's definitely a labor or love but it gives back so much that it's makes it worth the sweat and tears ❤
I love everything about this beautiful, clever garden. So wonderful to see that you don't need alot of land to grow so much food.
Amazing work, thank you 🎉 love the volunteer organisation with the 1/3 food distribution for all
❤❤ Beautiful Couple and Beautiful Property ! I would love to do something like this and bless my community
What a lovely couple and what a garden! My heroes, absolutely love the reuse of material!
So happy to have found your channel!! My husband and I are just now starting our journey of creating our homestead and documenting our journey. We definitely are going to be tuning in to y’all’s videos - old and new!❤
I loved every bit of this video. So wholesome and so real. Great couple, beautiful back yard
So happy you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching :)
Great to see your sparkling joy for what you have discovered and cultivated over the last few years 🎉
This is amazing nice work! Love seeing what you can produce in the backyard
Thanks for the detailed tour of this beautiful garden. It is truly inspiring. This feels like the proper way to live in this modern era, living in the city but still gardening.
amazing creativity in literally everything they're doing! super inspiring!
I absolutely live this!!! Its a total dream garden. Fantastic job yall.
Love, not live. I wish i lived it.
Wow amazing gardens. Thank you Matt and Danielle 👍👍❤️
Glad you enjoyed this video, thanks for your comment :)
Very smart plan 👏👏👏
Thank you for watching!!
This is amazing! I wish they had a RUclips channel - would love to see and learn how they grow everything in detail ❤
Just love this video, and your ingenuity in design & build. In these days of insane pricing you've managed to create a fantastic garden that's producing wonderful yields and looks great as well. Common sense and practicality reign in your backyard! 👍😊🇨🇦
A local farmer in my community sells tickets for ~$100 USD per person and she limits groups to 8 people, one or two days a month to come cut fresh flowers and fill a bucket for diy bouquets while she makes everyone tea and cookies. My husband and I did it last year and it was well worth the money-one of the best days of my year and I’ve never had prettier bouquets. Anyway, all that to say you could charge people to come fill a bucket and hang out and paint or do crafts in the yard! You two are such lovely people ❤
Wow, what an amazing and inspiring couple and garden!! Thanks for sharing
Beautiful people and garden
It's not a project, but a lifestyle. In England I grew up like this. You are saving so much time by processing the food. Quality food. Well done. You could always cut back to a smaller area, but just think if you didn't have garden beds, look at the moving you would have.
Amazing, beautiful and fantastic!😍
It turned into hoarding in a good way. Have fun 🎉
looks awesome! I am in the suburbs and do the same thing. I only have the one fruit tree, apple, but loads of blackberries. I also have 10 chickens.
Wow, I love how resourceful they are! Very inspiring 😀
try experimenting with pickling different crops. Pickled zucchini, radishes, garlic, beans, carrots. Pickled figs are also wonderful.
Wow, wow, wow! So much hard work and dedication. I have 5 tomato plants this year and the squirrels are savages - I need an angry owl!!
This garden comes with hard work and love!🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤
Great micro farm in the backyard 🌝👍
I love to see people playing in their own backyard. They show there are no limits to imagination. Two things I wish: that the size was told, and what is their climate zone...The watering system is GENIUS!
For $35 you can get a manual timer for your watering system. It makes it so much easier and you can get away!
Loved your share of this beautiful abundant garden. Fabulous 👌
Thanks so much! Hope you're all doing well and still enjoying your little homestead, all the best :) :)
@ExploringAlternatives Spring planting prep here at the moment. 1st seeds just went in (inside by the fire for warmth). And we have done a huge amount of bed preparation.
It's getting exciting 😁😁😁😁
Hope all is well there too ✨️
That's awesome! Getting reading for the season is the most exciting part! Seeing all the tiny seedlings eventually turn into food is just so cool, enjoy :)
I LOVE this!
This is absolutely incredible. I really want to move to a property like this and really implement permaculture. Using every square inch of space i had to build this exact thing. I to worry about pesticides and chemicals in general when food comes to my table. Ever since my grandparents died (they supplied all their 7 children plus all of us grandchildren, 14 in total with fruits and veggies) their garden died with them. We all used to eat fruits and veggies strictly from the garden. Food tastes massively different when you buy it in stores. When i get the money to do this im booking it asap. I have a huge support system that could make this possible
amazing beautiful homestead ❤
Beautiful people ❤ All the best to you in your wonderful garden.
Thanks so much :)
Great video, what a fun couple!
Nice 'hobby'! 😁 👌👌 For most people this would be a fulltime undertaking. 😅 This is a kind of organic projects umbrella to which a new activity is always unfolding 😊.
I wonder if they have thought about putting up a little stand in their front yard where their neighbours can buy their surplus (by putting the money in a box f.i.)? I would love that.
Hello my dear friend I really like gardens like this we can call our friends to eat and drink on the weekend it's really great Thank you for sharing your videos are very good and wonderful I love you guys
Amazing and so genuine in terms of the benefits along with highlighting the challenges
Amazing stuff! Love what you guys are doing. And giving away the excess produce.. That’s great! Keep going!
With the temperatures in that hot house you should be able to dry your tomatoes and fruit organically in hanging nets.
One thing I didn’t realise until watching this video is that when you have a large garden such as theirs you can’t really leave the property for long because the garden has to be looked after or it will die out or have pest issues. So you really need to be committed to have this kind of lifestyle.
Or great neighbors who like your food..
this is beyond incredible!
I'm loving your content very informative
Thanks so much! Happy to hear that you're enjoying the videos we're posting. Have a great day :)
Very impressive! Wish I was your neighbor 🙂
Awesome Garden! I like their Buildings and Constructions; it has a steampunkish Flair. 😃
So many clever things in this garden! Really lovely. Might want to try Dolly basil, I grow it in the sun in containers and it doesn't bolt. Snip the top leaves to make it bush out
Highly recommend automatic drip irrigation so you can go on small trips if you'd like. This took away so much of the work from our small garden!
I'm in the same city! So cool to discover your amazing project!
A very wise much needed investment!
Nice work guys, Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share.
Respect!
Like my mother used to say, "Everything good comes from the earth." And at abundance too! I particularly liked the dirt station. I think that's the deterrent most days to getting out and taking care of plants is the mess it'll take to clean up afterward. Having a designated box with a half counter is a great solution 👍 ! And who would have thought (actually, it makes total sense) of a homemade solar panel using empty cans?! Ingenious🤔. Btw, I've tried the owl trick. Perching it two different places on my balcony to keep doves from scouting and making their nests on it. It didn't work. What did is not having anything empty out there. Finally, I was able to tend to my plants without having a bird take off from somewhere with feathers ruffling up my hair😉.
This is so cool
Kỹ thuật làm của các bạn rất tốt ,cảm ơn về những chia sẻ của các bạn tới mọi người .
Awesome Video!…Love their microfarm!💖🫶🏼
Very nice and interesting video. Lovely couple! We have started a similar project, raised garden beds, fruit trees, upcycling, cllecting old wood, etc. Currently we are waiting to get our 7.500l rain water tank installed underground. Next will be a large greenhouse since we leave quite far north in Germany and have cold and wet winters.
What an amazing couple well done.
