    April 22 1778 - sailors and Marines of the US Ranger landed in Whitehaven, England, and proceeded to burn the shipping vessels and warehouses in the harbor. The shore battery was taken and silenced. The raid is to this day immortalized by the statue of a US Marine spiking a British cannon. RIP John Paul Jones

      The American Civil War was not about slavery. By that point, it was already agreed that slavery was wrong. Every person in the US (African, Caucasian, Arab, Asian, Latino, etc.) was and is guaranteed the right to do basically whatever they want so long as they are not violating anyone else's rights. Because slavery violated the slave's rights, it was illegal from the start when the constitution was written. The American Civil War was simply people rebelling from the government and had nothing to do with slavery.

      Lying Macaroon 64 well I am English so from our perspective the French united with the Americans because they would rather share the new world with a newly created independent state than with their biggest imperialist rivals and from our perspective they sold Louisiana to fund a war in which they were (again) trying to conquer our country, I appreciate the Americans have a positive history with France but we have been living next door to them for a very long time and our relationship has rarely been good from medieval times right up to the present day our countries have always hated each other lol.

      Napoleon also sold Louisiana for such a low price (the whole territory for only 15 million dollars) because he planned to launch an invasion from Haiti after his European conflicts had ended.

    • @baguettispaghetti8317
      @baguettispaghetti8317 8 лет назад +4

      In America, Napoleon is viewed in a rather neutral light, so, in English history classes, how is he portrayed? I've heard the term "Napoleo-Hitler" used to describe some historical figures and I've always wondered by Napoleon, who had introduced great civil reforms and unified a country in turmoil, was placed on the same pedestal as Adolf Hitler.

    • @redplanet667
      @redplanet667 8 лет назад +6

      Hanebol Barko yeah to Britain Napoleon is seen as a kind of Prototype-Hitler, although as you say the French revolution is never thought of as being a bad thing in itself it's the fact that it lead to a dictatorship (as most revolutions do) and the fact that from the English view point Napoleon basically represents another attempt from the French to conquer England and control the continent of Europe, to the English I suppose we see Napoleon in a funny way, he will always be associated with failure really, his failure to conquer Russia, his failure to unify Europe and his failure at the battle of Waterloo will always overule whatever success he had in reforming the French political system, to us Napoleon is a villian but not a serious one, just a bit of a clown, as you say though USA sees him in a neutral light which is understandable as they never had any bad dealings with him, I suppose to put it in context here in Britain we look at the American civil war in a very neutral way, we don't see the confederate army as bad guys we just see the north and south as being kind of equals really.

    The 13 Colonies were the only theatre the British were defeated in.

    • @Celrador
      @Celrador 9 лет назад

      chotormorg cacachi HAHAHA!
      I don't even know where to start...
      You don't understand or know communism AT ALL, which is why everything you said doesn't even make sense. All you do is repeating stupid propaganda. :D It's fucking hillarious.
      I will give you a REALLY simplistic and brief introduction to Communism and Socialism:
      _________
      Feudalism: The means of production are in the hands of the monarch
      [private] Capitalism: The means of production are owned by private entities
      [state] Capitalism: The means of production are owned by the government. *(This is what China/the USSR/North Korea have been or still are.)*
      Socialism: The means of production are owned by workers coops
      Communism: The means of production are owned by the commune they are located within
      _________
      The fact that you see Marxism as "just another form of Communism" is also showcasing, that you don't understand his concepts at all. Marx main work was in criticizing our current capitalist society, in which you automatically fall back to a Master-Slave society with the rich capitalists, who own everything, at the top and the poor human capital at the bottom due to the nature of our resources being limited and private entities being allowed to accumulate as much of these limited resources as they want. (To see that this prediction was correct, you just need to take a look at the income and wealth inequality.)
      He also laid out a possible way of how to reach Communism, which is basically Social Anarchism.
      And also the argument of "This is going against human nature" is the most retarded one, that a capitalist can bring against a socialist.
      It's also in human nature to murder or steal from someone. And yet we have laws to prohibit that, which therefore are forcing people to live according to the moral standards that we deem best for society, rather than arguing "It is against human nature to have laws!".
      I REALLY REALLY ADVISE YOU to first look up these concepts and learn something about Socialism/Communism, before you even dare to argue with me again. So far you've just used fucking stupid arguments, that you would only hear from people, who don't even grasp these concepts.
      (So I guess I was right with you being an uneducated American that is filled to the brim with propaganda, eh?)
      Your assumptions with me being delusional or having an "unexplainable hatred" for the US are therefore wrong aswell, as you made these assumptions based on a lack of knowledge about these topics.
      And something, that a lot of Americans can't grasp either: Criticizing your shithole of a nation isn't the same as straight up hating it.
      If I look at what the US has become since FDR/Eisenhower, it's really hard not to see it as a giant pile of shit. (Especially with your mentally deranged Republican party.)
      And this comes from someone, who is from an "allied nation" of yours. This, however, doesn't mean a lot. The neoconservatives that managed to grab the power in your country are constantly blackmailing my government, waging economic warfare against it, are spying on it and the entire population of my country and many more things.
      That's a criticism on the US alone though, rather than on it being a capitalist nation. (Even though this outcome was only possible due to it being capitalist... I probably said enough by now and I'm afraid, that trying to further explaining you the world will just lead to your head imploding.)

    Britain came so close to winning and had to take on Spain, France, Netherlands and the rebellion. All the while the tax was to an extent quite reasonable since it was colonists who gained most from the 7 years war. Also if there was no taxation without representation why didn't the colonists take the offer for representation. Also by the end of the war more people were for the crown than the rebellion.

    • @DylanDude
      @DylanDude 8 лет назад +26

      Britain was too far away for representation for the time, and the colonists also didn't feel people who lived such a different life and in a much different place should govern them.

      Thomas Norgate They didn't want representation, at least from what I've read. Britain was too far away, and it didn't make sense for someone that far away to govern them. Imagine if Poland had the ability to govern Mongolia.
      That's the situation they were in, except this was 240 years ago and it was even harder to communicate back then. The colonists also lived much differently than the British did, adding to the list of problems.

Most people you think of when you say American as in United States of America are of European descent, and Latin America, Central America, and South America tend to be of mostly Spanish descent. Most of the ACTUAL indigenous American population, as in Native Americans, were massacred by Conquistadores and early colonials, I think. I learned all of this a while ago...

    As an American, I must thank Great Britain for providing me with the most universal language in the world. We had strong fights in the past and my ancestor Justin was in the Revolution (on our side), but if it wasn't for Britain, our world would be very different. Not only for the US but for everyone. I know the world enjoys the fruits of America today, but we would be unrecognizable without Britain. Despite our rocky past, Great Britain is engrained in America. As an American Citizen, I would do all I can in the future to hold our friendship with GB. We were once enemies, but we had to overcome extreme hardship to form a close friendship. What better nation to fight with during the World Wars but with GB.
    I am just in awe of our history. Bitter at first, but sealed in an unbreakable bond since. You all gave us our language! We speak the Queen's language...with a few tweaks :) Anyway, I am fascinated with our history and if need be, in the future, I will fight to the end to keep our friendship with our fellow English brothers. UK & US forever!
    France is for another comment. We have such great love for you! Any American says otherwise...they are sorely unamerican. What a great world we live.

    I think the one war in history that fascinates me the most, is the American Revolution and I am not even American, I am English! I just find this war inspiring, how they fought for their nations rights and freedoms that they still enjoy today, I am actually glad they won, I may not be able to enjoy the same freedoms as an American citizen, but I am happy that such a country exists in the world, which enables people to have certain inalienable rights, such as the right to keep and bare arms, Its difficult to get American citizenship now for me here in England, It was a close war, but I just have to say well done for achieving independence against well the worlds super power at the time, Smart move by france in the battle towards the end.. I have also watched the film the patriot, and in that film, you see historic buildings with the Union jack flying above them, then the next day the star spangled banner, still, to this day in certain parts of England, you have old buildings with our flag flying above them, I try and imagine life in the colonies, and what hoisting the American flag above the building must have meant for them... fighting for Freedom.

      Can't think of any good ones to recommend at the moment but I can definitely say that you should take anything you watch in the Patriot with a garbage truck full of salt. There are so many inaccuracies with that movie it should be called "America: the Fictional Story of How Our Country thinks it actually Beat the United Kingdom".
      Proud American here; but I can't endorse such falsified drivel.

      +George Rector (grector4) just to point something out, the 2nd amendment says that people can bear guns for the use of the militia they are to be part of, which we no longer have unless you count the national guard, but let's be fair that doesn't really count. I'm not saying anything, I'm just saying that's what our founding fathers meant. And gun control to an extent isn't the worst, as long as it keeps it out of the hands of people that shouldn't have lethal weapons.

    2:57 I got mindfucked because I legit thought there were only two people in the Continental Army. Also, I legit thought a spaceship came on the first Independence Day and abducted everyone! Thank god I watched this video!

    Just and FYI: There is often confusion over alot, a lot and allot. The most common mistake involving these words is writing alot instead of a lot. Remember, the word alot does not exist (unless you mean the Indian town of Alot). Alot ought to be two words; i.e., it is a misspelling of a lot.
