I'm glad someone's actually talking about how bad 5G is. I switched from a 4G entry level phone to a 5G enabled phone (both with Verizon) and if anything my connectivity has gotten worse, not better. I find I have no service more often, and even when my phone displays 3 or 4 out of 5 4G bars I still can't get basic things to load like a web search or Google Maps.

    • @Jspider56
      @Jspider56 Год назад +5

most 5G phones are programmed to bias towards the 5G connection which can really hurt when the device isn't testing for signal strength or latency.
A detail that's likely to have changed, since I've been out of the game for a year and a half, is early 5G phones would still send data requests out over 4G frequency then only recieve downloads from the 5G. This would lead to phones failing entirely if one of the frequencies failed as the device wouldn't verify what was happening. I remember my buddies in tech support grumbling about the issue and customers being upset that they couldn't get 5G 100% of the time with their new phones.

People tend to forget how long it took 3G & 4G to become stable. It took years of tweaking it. It's going to be the same for 5G. Yes, 5G sucks right now, but it will get better over time. The problem is that big phone companies over hyped that 5G is here, which it is truly not. At this point, it's only in certain areas, and the main fallback is 4G, like 3G was to 4G when 4G was going up. Not to mention, the phone companies still have to convert the 3G towers( which they just took down) with the 5G towers. The kicker is that you still have to pay while your service is crap which the phone companies call growing pains.

  • @Sniperoonie

Love that you brought up how bad 5g is. When I first got my fold 3 I turned off the 5g. Somewhere down the line either Verizon or Samsung hid the option to disable it and now I wander around on 4g while my wife struggles to get signal just feet away from me because her phone is still trying to pick up 5g. The fact that companies were charging more for 5g enabled phones when it first came out is insanity now looking back on it.

I've used every carrier's service that actually owns the towers: AT&T UYW Elite and FirstNet Extra, T-mobile MM, and Verizon's Get More. All three are comparably priced, offer similar features, and most importantly, are the Flagship of 5G for its respective service outside of subsidiaries or leased infrastructure users. My biggest takeaway is that 5G is always an issue of coverage. Sure I'll get ultra wide band here with Verizon, but 30 feet to the left, and it's gone. From what I've gathered, AT&T is more reliable and widespread, even if it is a bit slower. Tmobile had considerably worse coverage than both, though calls always seemed to work. honestly, if you could just have one device that allows you to utilize your number on all three company's towers we'd be significantly closer to the 5G experience we were promised.

@xFrosty Resonance I am a network admin for a fortune 100 chemical company and I work exclusively in the wireless networking arena. Cellular companies have been promising 'Coast to coast 5G!' for years now. But the reality is with these 60-80 Ghz PTP microwave links the nominal range is around 1,000 feet total. This will require a 5G asset to be installed every thousand feet approximately to get true RF cellular propagation of the 5G kind. With 5G I would expect nothing less than 1000 Mbps. However unless you are directly in front of a 5G asset...or have line of sight with that gateway impeded...your speeds will dramatically decrease. These companies have small pockets of 5G hardware spread across the country. This is how they make thier nonsensical claims of 'Coast to coast 5G'. The reality is less than 10% of the country is being blanketed by 5G wireless RF signals. The sheer cost of getting upwards of 50% of the country covered with true 5G will cost more than 100 billion dollars. Consumers will not come close to true 5G wireless propagation until at least another decade from 2022.

eh I'm running around this thread explaining this but basically 5G on lower bands is mostly just better connection security. Basically networks can run more devices with fewer dropped calls with the devices needing to resend requests less often creating marginal speed increases.
Your 5G connectivity depends on where you are and what band the network has deployed for the 5G connection. When i worked for a carrier I used to be able to load up a signal map and actually see which frequencies were graded the best in different areas (don't pester most cell workers about it, the tool is niche and unless they're particularly nerdy they won't open up about things that are difficult to read)

I get what you are saying about the panel gaps however the reason reviewers bring it up so much is because to an educated shopper, consistent panel gaps is one of the easiest ways to just look at a car and see if it is built well or not. This is especially important in ICE cars since those lapses in build quality will usually transition to most of the rest of the mechanical parts of the vehicle. You want an ICE car that has high quality build quality so the engine, transmission, and so on will probably last a while. I think it’s good that reviewers bring up panel gap inconsistencies because even if normal people don’t understand or care why it’s important, it is a con on the list that might tip the scale for them when looking at reviews

I have never bought a new car and everything I have had was used vehicles. One of the main ways I can tell if a car was in an accident is looking specifically for panels gaps. Now if you can let that go in a new car then you do you. But when that Tesla reaches the used market, how would a person buying the vehicle know if its an accident car or has had gaps from the factory? You can of course take it to a professional, but I am sure their will be situations where the professional cannot tell the cause of the panel gap.

Same in EU. Important to remember is that Tesla is a small manufacturer, blanket statements like “most people would still get a Tesla” create a reality distortion field because most people wouldn’t buy a Tesla at all, and tgey don’t.

    • @_TbT_

Wanted to say the same. If that panel gap problem still exists, it is an „American manufacturing“ issue, not necessarily a Tesla issue.

@@_TbT_ yes, that was indeed my point as well, I used to live near the Fremont plant and it’s more so that it’s an old plant acquired from legacy auto, this is where a lot of the S, X, and early 3’s and y’all were from, they just don’t have all the newest manufacturing gear. I’m sure the Austin builds are now great as well, matching the quality of Shanghai and Germany. We love our Shanghai Model Y.

@@MrManafon Nah you misunderstood his point.
Most people that are interested in buying a Tesla would still buy a Tesla. That’s his argument.
Just like people buying a Toyota would likely buy one even with worse panel gaps. Because they choose Toyota for their low price and reliability. Not because it’s a beautiful or perfect car.

5G here in my home country is absolutely horrendous. My LTE signal has higher bars, faster speed, lower latency, lower power consumption everywhere I go. I have switched 5G off on every single one of my family members and friends phones after we did the speed test comparing their LTE and 5G speeds 5G is ultimately useless. I feel really good about my opinions been validated by MKBHD himself.

I think the thing with the panel gaps is a misunderstanding. Reviewers do not mention them because they are such a big deal taken alone (you are right, most people do not care that much), but because they are an indicator of the maturity of the manufacturing process. Consistency in the build quality of the outer shell indicates consistency in all quality aspects of a car, and problems there indicate problems in other areas.
