    Awesome work! I wish all people doing reviews did this good job.
    Have you tried to measure the reference curve for PRTF in anechoic chamber/acoustically dead room? As most speakers have been designed to emit as good sound response as possible in acoustically dead (or heavily acoustically treated but not dead) rooms it would make more sense to me to compare pinna-related differences to the direct speaker response (that is, speaker output without any room reflections).
    I think this would better measure the quality / accuracy of the headphones because you can add artificial room reverb but if the headphones always simulate room response, you cannot remove it after the fact. For the same reason, I think headphones should have zero crosstalk because you can very easily adjust crosstalk in DSP but you cannot remove it.
    As for all the rest, I agree on your methodology.

    Thanks for the video and explanation. I tend to like headphones without any soundstage, for example I like M50X more than DT770. I am using headphones next to my studio monitors for mixing, and all of my monitors and headphones are measured and digitally corrected so I can get as close as possible to the flat frequency response curve. How successful this is, well it is another story, but for me it is much better to have frequency curve closer than further from the flat one.
    As for soundstage, is DT770 a bad example of larger soundstage so that is why I like more direct, and concrete sounding M50X, or it is all just a personal preference? Thanks...

    I think it would have been good to explain a bit more about how group delay errors affect the audio quality. Saying that "bass sounds less tight" just hints the actual issue. If speaker or headphone has perfect frequency response but poor group delay, it means that the speaker or headphone is able to reproduce correct frequency with correct sound pressure but the timing of the start and end of the sound is incorrect. And it should be obvious that if your bass frequencies are playing delayed compared to rest of the music, the result will obviously sound a lot worse.
    It might be better to render group delay relative to length of a sound wave to get more accurate image for higher frequencies. If I remember correctly, the hearing threshold is slightly above one cycle length so it should be 1/50th of a second for 50 Hz and 1/10000th of a second for 10 kHz. Graphing the percentage of the delay relative to hearing threshold for each frequency should result in graph where hearing threshold is a straight line and group delay would visibly go over the line for problematic frequencies and we would be able to see differences in group delay for higher frequencies better even when the actual value is below the hearing threshold.
    And one very important thing to understand is that you can use EQ to flatten the frequency response but that will cause more problems to group delay. Fixing both at the same time electrically requires very complex DSP.

      Hi Mikko!
      We noticed a few of your comments, so we're going to try and address both of them here.
      firstly, thanks for your great feedback and insight. Rendering group delay relative to length of the sound wave is an interesting idea that would be worth exploring in the future once we decide to revisit and improve our imaging tests. I've made sure to write down your idea.
      As for measuring the reference curve for PRTF in an anechoic room, we definitely thought and considered it as an option, but we usually prioritize doing measurements in rooms/environment that are relatable to people when using the product. Having a reference curve measured in an anechoic room could lead to disconnect between our measurements and the true experience when using the product. Of course we are always open to hear everyone thoughts on this since in the end nothing is set in stones and the goal of each of our tests is to help people find the best product they need for their specific usage.
      Thanks again and do not hesitate if you have any other suggestions.

    Amazing stuff, I was always curious about this. I have a few questions about PRTF. Have you done any subjective tests to varify your methodology? Shouldn't this response vary greatly between different pinna? And finally, don't you think some headphones with bad PRTF can make up for it by having resonances that match the corresponding pinna resonances, which obviously wouldn't show up in the PRTF? Thanks!

    • @RTINGSdotcom
      @RTINGSdotcom  6 лет назад

      1) Only internal subjective tests for now. 2) Since this test is the difference with and without pinna, it should somewhat transfer to other pinna. 3) Technically yes. This is less likely to match the listeners pinna though.

      Ok i think i get it, thanks for the reply!

  • @fidrewe99
    @fidrewe99 5 лет назад

    Question: Shouldn't the localization cues of a headphone be ingrained in the PRTF as well as the frequency response itself? I mean, why would it matter, if a 30° sound incidence pattern is created through pinna resonances or the headphone itself?
    By the way, why does the phase response itself play such a minor role in your tests? I mean, for sound localization it doesn't matter, but for the accurate reproduction of "sound texture" and transients it clearly does.

  • @fidrewe99
    @fidrewe99 5 лет назад

    Do you have an idea, why the phase response is completely different for the same earphone model measured by rtings vs. measured by inner fidelity? There is virtually no similarity between the two graphs for each model that I tried. Inner fidelity measures them at 600 Ohm output impedance.

    The right pads, Equalizer APO, A1Stereo Control by Alex Hilton, free VST that works better than any paid software I have tried. And a compressor. The equalizer in Equalizer Apo Is a ridiculous tool that can actually boost the currents in your headset, it can break your headset if you wanted to do that. With these tools, I can make any headphone with a good driver have an amazing sound stage and balanced sound. The only reason we're still at this point with headphones is because manufacturers suck. They intentionally sell gimped products to create market segments. And that's the story. One more thing. isn't it strange that with a relatively meh driver, with basically no thought in the design of the driver casing ( the headphone shape itself) but with the correct type of pad, you get a completely different sound? Why is driver technology basically at the same level as 30 years ago. It is beyond depressing.

    All this soundstage talk sounds to me more like a "Vinyl vs Digital" audio debate, the one is warmer due to its nature the other can do whatever you want it to do(even emulate Vinyl "Coloring")
    The soundstage should not come from the headphones but from the content!
    I use in ear headphones(ROCK zircon and Tinaudio T2) and in games where a good HRTF is implemented the soundstage is vast and the imaging is accurate.
    same goes for other content like binaural audio(Virtual haircut for example) these recordings sounds perfect using in-ears, as they sound like the real world sounds like.
    As an engineer I admire the work done here though!

    Why do you guys do this absolutely idiotic thing with your freq response measurements where you apply some arbitrary target as reference and then compensate the raw measurements based on that?
    Deviation from target is a fun graph, but it shouldn't be your frequency response measurement

    • @RTINGSdotcom
      @RTINGSdotcom  2 года назад +1

      Hey George, our target curve is based on the Harman target curve that aim to be the profile most would like based on their extensive research. Of course this target does not represent everyone's personal preference, but it allows to quickly see whether a headphone has more bass then what an average listener would like for example and we think it makes the graph more approachable at a glance. It is to be noted that we do include raw measurements in our reviews on the website for users that prefer this approach. All that being said, we understand that it may not be the perfect solution, and we're always looking for ways to improve, so don't hesitate to share any suggestions or thoughts you have for ways we can improve this situation!

    • @Gamez4eveR
      @Gamez4eveR 2 года назад

      @@RTINGSdotcom the Harman target is excellent, great and all, but I don't think you should use deviation from target as your main frequency response graph. I think raw freq response, with an overlay of the harman target curve average is a much better approach. Let us avoid oversimplification of using deviation as default
      I know you publish raw fr graphs as well, but those aren't the ones that show up from your site on google images :)
