This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Soren Kierkegaard's Fear and Trembling. This is a classic work of Existentialist literature and philosophy, and focuses upon the figure of Abraham and the demands of faith. In this lecture, we discuss what Kierkegaard means by calling faith not only a "passion", but the highest passion in a human being.

I remember a missionary telling me:
"It's not I have faith because I love
    It's I love because I have faith"
And this helped me sort that out in my head but I can't say I understand this very well.

Well, like most philosophical matters, you don't need to understand it all at once

It is in and through the scriptures that this is brought forth. "God is Love" (1 John 4:8) and "We love him, because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19).This is putting it in order, or shows protocol! God, because he is love, gave himself, showing love, therefore, the rest is the faith we put/have, in this loving God!

This video really helped me understand the concept of passion as described by Kierkegaard. My philosophy professor challenged us to explain whether or not a "concentrated passion" is unlivable because it is "incommensurable" in the shared public world. I argued that as we all can deeply desire something and be motivated by it, whether it is faith in God, faith in humanity, faith in family, etc, it is possible for us to share in the, as you say, ability to "feel," even if one's passion is not motivated by the same thing as someone else's. I argued that faith is the basis of these kinds of passions, making them a "higher" emotion even if they are not directly related to God, because they all come from the same human desire to connect and are shared by all of us who want to live a meaningful life. When they are genuine, they are shared in the public world because we are all experiencing a drive toward something bigger than ourselves even though it might look completely different from one person to the next, so much so that may even conflict with each other. I was definitely lacking in some areas when trying to explain this in a recent paper, so thank you so much for making this video. I am not a philosophy expert by any means and I struggle to express myself how I think you are "supposed" to when talking about philosophical concepts. In short, your explanation really helped me and I feel more equipped to share my thoughts, so thank you!!

I’m glad it was useful for you in your studies.
For my part, I’d say people feel all sorts of passions that can be “incommensurable” in some sense

    "Trust"
Blindly I stare out into space for the truth
Do you see this face? My eyes are not of youth
But I know this much, that truth must exist
And with every touch and parting kiss
I get closer to a truth long forgotten
That beauty is real and cynicism is a coffin
That it's okay to feel, to reach into space
Into the unknown, and allow myself to see a face
A soul much lovelier and more beautiful than my own

What Kierkegaard categorised as "passions" is surprising. This throws the relationship into new questions.

Faith is an infiinite chasm. The story has to be so absurd that there not only no way to prove that he existed (salvation) but that it’s the opposite of even that. That’s why it’s an infinite chasm. The REAL Abraham. Down side of this is that we are all Philistines. My dad used to explain “doing the right thing” like throwing a ball to PARIS. Dad can maybe throw the ball 100 yards and I can throw the ball 90 yards. Still, both of us are really not even close to the target and to get there would take not just trekking through mountains and deserts but also the ocean. It’s the “Infinite Chasm”. Kierkegaard started out with faith but later in Works of Love he came to the same conclusion as Paul - so there remains faith, hope, and love but the greatest of these is love.

He's already talking about love in this work
