Got asked by a cop 2 times today and yesterday if I'm okay while railfanning. It's mainly for safety reasons and the fact of how many people commit s*icide on railroad tracks per year.
Railfans have become targets of misdirected suspicion and retribution ever since 9/11 A lot of it today is due to railroads cutting costs, and employees not wanting to get caught on camera either not doing their jobs, or doing something wrong, in the light of these recent derailment, etc. Some railfans can't help but film the bad conditions of the tracks when trains are operating, and from time to time, actually capture derailments on camera. Those are a few reasons railroad companies don't want any record of these things to be seen later. The last thing, is the hype created by mass media, where they promote the notion of a "terrorist" around every corner. This is false of course, but it's the age we live in. This isn't 1978.

Very nice video. You were cool to the cops and vice versa. I am an engineer with 29 yrs in. I hate to say it but, no, you didnt need to be standing on the tracks to prove that there was a gate malfunction. train coming or not. Just let the people figure it out. Other than that, good video.
lol, happened to me this past Saturday. 3 police officers came over to me and 2 of my friends and told us that people thought we were going to jump in front of the train and end ourselves. They could clearly see us with tripods and cameras to record these trains, one of the cops asked if we were just train-watching. We eventually moved over somewhere else, 1/3 cop cars was just supervising to see if we did anything stupid, and eventually left after realizing we just only came there to railfan.
If you are a railfan that likes to watch, photo or video trains please do so from public property. Do not tresspass onto railroad property with out authorization additionally, be safe at all times. I was railbuffing off of work one time waiting for Amtrak.. the police stopped me and asked whqt i was doing being suspicious... I work for Amtrak, i work for the damn railroad
well I say this, that person that called on you was noisy and should have minded their own business, you was not breaking any laws or doing anything illegal, filming is actually a first amendment protected activity, its not against the law,it didn't need to take 3 officers to speak to you about anything, even though they were cordial, they had no reason to stop you unless you were committing a crime or breaking the law,but I am glad you did not get in trouble or go to ydc over stupid nonsense, you are very mature for your age and a well mannered young man.
I think the cause for them bringing out multiple officers is that there was a rookie and I guess they just had help nearby, Second I think somebody just called me and because I thought I was gonna commit suicide or something not for necessarily breaking the law, so they just sent it in some officers to come check in.
@@NC_YT_123 that sergeant should of explained to his lower officer that filming trains is not against the law and you was not commiting a crime,it should of been a learning experience for all,not to make assumptions about someone or question you like a criminal, may be I am just over thinking things a bit dude, know your rights young man because when you get older, you may need them.
Holy cow this is almost the exact same way a police officer approached me in Brownsburg IN. The officer though wanted me to go home which is reasonable
I should say the line runs right behind my uncle’s house and the crossing I was at had Safetran Model 85s which are quite rare. Mostly found in the eastern states. I guess next time I’m going to set up an ATCS monitor (if there is one for the CSX Crawfordsville sub). Then I will go out when there is a train near.
As a bonus that day the line was apparently dormant because of track work. The trains are not high priority besides the Amtrak trains which run at 6 am and 11 pm.
I live by the station in Davis, and your replication of the voice of the "Davis Karen" at 14:30 had me rolling on the floor laughing. That voice was something else. Curious: how was the signal malfunctioning? I've seen this weird thing there that a rail employee showed me 20 years ago, and I wonder if it's still happening.
I've said elsewhere I've had encounters with MTA cops while photographing Metro North. Encounters lasted about a minute, never even asked for ID, and they were great.
is that Dixon CA?? (i know both crossings, one is quad Siemens gate and then the other is a WCH gate with WRRS brackets, LEDS! {have not figured out the bell names yet} and then more down the UP line is a cantilever setup with a mech bell (my favorites) and UP is my favorite frieght company soooo yeah,, also Amtrak Cali is more common than Amtrak itself so keep that in mind) hi
As long as you’re not trespassing and minding your distance around the railroad tracks, then there’s no problem at all with railfanning. The police was doing their job to make sure that everything was ok.
this happened once between me and a crew of a local train. I crossed that track for a better angle and i was with my brother and the train stopped beacuse the crew thiught i trespassed when i was not even near. I moved to a different spot and me and my brother heard police sirens and ran home

I was railbuffing off of work one time waiting for Amtrak.. the police stopped me and asked whqt i was doing being suspicious... I work for Amtrak, i work for the damn railroad
Those police officers were nice.
well I say this, that person that called on you was noisy and should have minded their own business, you was not breaking any laws or doing anything illegal, filming is actually a first amendment protected activity, its not against the law,it didn't need to take 3 officers to speak to you about anything, even though they were cordial, they had no reason to stop you unless you were committing a crime or breaking the law,but I am glad you did not get in trouble or go to ydc over stupid nonsense, you are very mature for your age and a well mannered young man.
I've seen this weird thing there that a rail employee showed me 20 years ago, and I wonder if it's still happening.
nice police offiicers and your right
I've said elsewhere I've had encounters with MTA cops while photographing Metro North. Encounters lasted about a minute, never even asked for ID, and they were great.
is that Dixon CA?? (i know both crossings, one is quad Siemens gate and then the other is a WCH gate with WRRS brackets, LEDS! {have not figured out the bell names yet} and then more down the UP line is a cantilever setup with a mech bell (my favorites) and UP is my favorite frieght company soooo yeah,, also Amtrak Cali is more common than Amtrak itself so keep that in mind)

@@NC_YT_123 lol. Pretty sure I was too. 😀
W Officer!
As long as you’re not trespassing and minding your distance around the railroad tracks, then there’s no problem at all with railfanning. The police was doing their job to make sure that everything was ok.
I film trains at emporia Virginia
Today I deal with CSX railroad Police and yes they are coolist I never had any issue.
this happened once between me and a crew of a local train. I crossed that track for a better angle and i was with my brother and the train stopped beacuse the crew thiught i trespassed when i was not even near. I moved to a different spot and me and my brother heard police sirens and ran home
I see
cops: “we got you fam “
