    I personally knew a young teenager back in the 1980's who lost his arm above the elbow by a moving train and had to have the rest of it amputated at the shoulder as it was so totally mangled the doctors couldn't save any of it. All because he was messing around playing fun and games and was jumping on and off moving trains in a switching yard. His parents had to not only pay thousands of dollars for all the medical treatments he had to undergo afterward but also had to pay thousands of dollars more for all the court fees as well because the Rail-Road's lawyer's as well as the judge deemed it no fault on the part of the Rail-Road. Another thing with the equipment being unlocked is that it is currently unknown, who knows if he could have picked the locks or stumbled across it unlocked, It could be anything and i am only trying to spread awareness of what he is doing so that this does not happen in the future. We as railfans do not want this happening in our community and i am sure that this will cause BNSF to tighten security on the Garretson area.

    Why the hell switches and equipment cabinets are not locked? Why the hell there is no signalization to railway personal about unauthorized access to the equipment? Why the hell signals to the train didn't change to "stop" after switch was set to the other direction? I think BNSF are "RailFans", not a reliable railway company, because only amators can use railway traffic control equipment with no basic security and safety features. Even in old and rusty 60-th Soviet railway traffic control systems switches are locked mechanicaly and electricaly and unauthorized switch turning sends "stop" signal to the locomotive and alert signal to the station dispatch.

    So unbelievable. Thankfully the locomotive he trespassed was locked down preventing him from putting it in motion. Besides the control locks, the manual handbrakes are also set as a backup. As for him messing with the switches and the electric cabinet, that is some scary stuff. Those are supposed to be padlocked and either he somehow has keys or he had bolt cutters. Incredibly disturbing.

    We wonder why railroad workers often scowl, harass or try to get railfans to move on. Aside from not wanting to be photographed and/or videoed on their jobs. There's a point at which rail fanning becomes weirdo-ism, and then moves into trespass/vandalism - ruining it for the good rail fans who just want to have the simple pleasure of watching trains.

  • @RoyalKingOfTheRails
    @RoyalKingOfTheRails Год назад +1

    That's not a railfan, that's a trespasser right there. What he has done is illegal, he has tampered and trespassed on railroad property and what if he set the switch so a train went on the wrong track and maybe even caused a crash or damage to the railroad. A true railfan respects the railroad, helps encourage others (non-railfans) to be safe around railroad tracks, and helps set an example of filming and enjoying seeing trains the right way. If anyone ever wants to get an in-depth look at anything, just ask for permission from the railroad. If they say no, you have to respect their wishes. It is their property so they can do what they want.

    I think this speaks to two larger issues. One is this notion of documenting every single thing you do for internet fame and the lack of respect people have for things that are not theirs and are not authorized to operate. The sad thing is all the railfans who are respectful, get lumped into this group as a whole.

    Even though I’m a railfanner, and if I see this irl I would tell him “My dude, you can’t do that!” Hopefully BNSF will be able to punish that guy for what he’s done. Hence if Union Pacific saw that, which I live in Texas, I would’ve told the crew about everything he’s doing stuff to active railroad stuff illegally. I hope to god he doesn’t show up to my area on where I was going to railfan anywhere filming any trains

    As an european who is a rail enthusiast, seeing how mainline switches in the US don’t have any locks on gives me anxiety. Every single mainline switch (in Poland at least) that is a mechanical decentralised (Hand) operation, has two locks. One for each setting that goes into an interlocking system at a signalbox. Something like that in the US just seems like begging for a disaster sooner or later, when some mentally sick human decides to watch a train „drift”. Rail safety is not only common sense, but also well thought trough meaures that can ensure the safety of rail traffic, even in cases where stand-byers can’t be trusted.

      and because of kids, even adults. because of these kinds of stunts. we as legal hobbyists can get in deep trouble. just trying to get a photo or three. even while keeping away from the tracks.
      used to be able to access part's of the stockton WP, SP, and ATSF yards. but as long as you kept to the roadway, stayed out of "things" it was ok. not a problem. but now under UP. everything is behind razor wire, cctv, armed guards, etc.
