Me and my mom found this kitten and saw it almost get hit. We go my dad and he grabbed him. It has been 1 week and 1 day since then and we decided to keep him that Halloween day. His name is Boo, and he is the sweetest thing in my life. I think whatever God, Goddess, whatever that brought this sweet boy into me and my families lives. Now please help save the black cats. #SaveBlackCats
The worse is that Satanists will get black cats and sacrifice them. I'm all for saving black cats. I've got a little black girl myself. And my son recently rescued a pregnant black cat someone dumped on a busy bridge. Saved her from getting run over and is now helping to raise her kittens and find them good homes. 3 blacks and 1 grey and just starting to learn to play.

I never knew about this, but it is nice! I love the way they drew the cats and it is informative, but also enjoyable. Though that one cat was pretty hardy to take on all those rats in a small, enclosed space. And those kittens are precious!
Animation is amazing. I remember this video! However, cats and dogs culled during plagues weren't actually killed because of the "evil eye". They were killed because medical experts at the time thought their mangy coats held onto miasma, unbalancing the humors and spreading the plague. During the Great Plague of London (1665-1666) city clerks recorded the distribution of 50,000 bounties for dogs and twice as many for cat corpses when the city decided to destroy them in an effort to prevent the plague's spread. Humorism, the notion that the body was made of four fluids and the balance or imbalance of these fluids caused disease, had been created in ancient Greece and remained the dominant medical theory by which doctors practiced until well into the 1800's.
I think this might be one of my favorite cat art styles. So realistically-proportioned and captures notable characteristics of a cat. Really goes with the tone of this cartoon
😯 wow here, you can tell this was way before the 1980s and that is for sure. still I enjoyed watching it along with other halloween programs back then. you can tell they don't make these type of cartoons anymore or they don't even play them the way they use to anymore either. Which is a shame. I truly do miss some, it's like everything's pretty much for downloading or on RUclips anymore.
2:33 I always thought was an abandoned swing set with leaves blowing when I was little. I have not seen this scene in years. I use to watch this when it was on A Disney Halloween.
'Extinct' is a bit of an exaggeration, but cats (and dogs!) were blamed for the spread of the plague in many cities, and were exterminated wholesale in the tens of thousands. In a twist of fate, by doing this those cities doomed themselves because the cats and dogs they killed controlled the rat population - without them, the rat population, and the fleas they carried, exploded and spread the disease so much further than it would have otherwise gone. By slaughtering all those animals, the ignorant fools doomed themselves. If they'd kept the cats and dogs that killed the rats, they would've suffered significantly less - but it was a time of superstition and fear, not rational thinking.
This cartoon about cats was so heartbreaking to watch. Cats never did anything wrong they helped the community so much by getting rid of pests. Plus I've seen violence being committed to this day. I used to live in a dorm with other people and every evening after my classes or coming home from work I'd see this black cat hanging out around the building. I'd greet her and feed her everyday and would just sit on the grass whether it be on my phone or with a book while she would lay beside me or I'd be playing with her or cuddle her. And after a few days of getting to know her I also noticed she was heavily pregnant I think she had a total of three kittens but I couldn't find them. Thankfully her kittens were found and were placed in a loving home by a staff member of the dorm. But I loved that black cat I called her Luna and my friends would often hang out with me while she was around or look after her while I was gone for the weekends. But not everyone liked her. Some people would hit and kick her simply because she was either a cat and for some it was because she was a black cat. One time when I stepped out to clean the dumpster area for an assignment I saw her sitting by the dorms relaxing and not bothering anyone but a girl instantly hit her with a broom she was sweeping with and proceeded to yell at her and call her names like bitch and filthy when she was surprisingly clean. I instantly ran to defend the cat and checked to see if she was okay. Thankfully she was alright but I started yelling at the girl who hit her calling her a cruel bitch and a monster and I comforted the cat. The girl proceeded to call me a weirdo because apparently one cat's life is more important to me than the humans who I live with. I ignored her and she threw a slur at me and called me disgusting for grabbing my own lower half when I never did and I didn't even know this girl yet she had something against me. After i made sure the cat was okay I did my chore and went back to my dorm petting Luna one last time for the night and went to my room. I actually cried that night cuz I hated how people treated her so cruelly when all she wanted was love and affection. She'd bite and fight with other cats but that's normal for cats to do. But she would never do me any harm and I'd never harm her yet there were assholes who beat up on a cat simply because she was there and is minding her own business. That night in my room I told a friend what happened and I admitted that what that bitch who hit her said was true. I did value the cat's life over everyone in that dorm. But all the girls were either bitchy or stuck up and I honestly couldn't care less if something happened to them. Luna was nothing but sweet and adorable to me and I knew she deserved a loving home. I eventually left the dorm and school cuz I graduated and I sadly couldn't take Luna with me cuz my parents had a cat already and I saw how she'd get defensive around other cats, my fiance and his grandmother couldn't take her cuz Coyotes were common and she'd probably get killed by them. I honestly don't know what did ever happen to her but I hope she was able to find a loving and happy home if she did.
@Blue Dog Still educational. To this day there is still debate about the type of flea that originally carried the plague, and whether or not the strain was strictly just bubonic or perhaps merged with another disease. Even ignoring the plague part of this cartoon, it's still a really good introduction for kids to learn more about the witch hunts, and to maybe encourage them to learn more about them on their own.
@Blue Dog yes, but rats were a major conductor of the illness, and the imbeciles retarded catholic bastards killed their only barrier: the domestic cats, that's why the plague spreaded. I love cats, I have one which is black as night and in these two days (halloween) I have to close all my doors so he won't get out, he's too friendly and there are bad people who use the poor animals in their voodoo practices... I would shoot them all if I could...
I don't know why this came across my fyp but it's a good watch. It shows how simple minded people can be when it comes to superstition. Thanks for posting!
Once upon a time cats were worshiped, then they were feared and blamed for all sorts of things, now they're everywhere online and people can't get enough of cat videos!!! I'm really glad that we've learned, and are still learning, about cats!! I love all my cats...I have five furry babies and they each have their own personality!! ^_^
I'm more of a dog person, but I realize how important cats are. There's a black cat in my neighborhood, that kills dozens of mice/rats a day. I reward him with treats like milk.
This sure is a different cartoon about cats. Other one's Tom, Sylvester, Mr. Jinx, Punkin Puss, Garfield, the cats from Mighty Mouse have never been portrayed as stealthy hunters or creatures of the night.
I love how Disney knows they can know how to do serious, edgier, and darker stuff like this to prove they're more than kid's stuff and to show more they appeal to people young and old, even Walt Disney knows how to shock his viewers and audiences by inserting darker, frightening scenes in his movies and cartoons to prove his art can be more serious and edgy at times other than just being family-friendly,but this bit from "The Great Cat Family"(1956) and Education for Death, along with The Mad Doctor,Pluto's Judgement Day,and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow really showed how he and his studio really pushed the boundaries to frighten and spook their whole audience using fear, terror, and implications of what it is about to happen, along with informing and teaching everyone a lesson is why doing things like being mean to cats, thinking they're devils or evil spirits, showing the horrors of working under the evil regime of Germany, and encountering a ghost that just takes joy in cutting each others head's off and throwing a flaming a pumpkin at them, could lead to serious consequences and other stuff like getting nearly killed or imprisoned or can give you nightmares, trauma, and stuff that can haunt you for the rest of your life.
I once had a black cat, she was the most loving cat ever! I had two, one gray and one black. My black one was very friendly and lovable, my gray cat wasn’t as friendly, he only wanted me, his owner, but he never harmed anyone. I love and miss them both!
I saw this when I was a kid, and then years later I wasn't sure if I dreamed it or not. It's the only Disney production that doesn't portray the Middle Ages as uniformly wonderful. And the only creepy story that says witches WEREN'T real, because they were trying to do a cartoon documentary I guess. (How many evil witches are in Disney cartoons?) Thank you RUclips, for bringing back this half-remembered memory.
This is more than a cartoon. So, many facts are given in the most possible eloquent way, which kids could easily understsnd. Beautifully drawn and coloured town and other things. I particularly like scenes around fireplace in cartoons and other media. Loved it.
I like all animals, even rats. No animal is evil or demonic. Just trying to get by. Yes, rats get into the grain supply, but not because they are the devil, just opportunistic . What I thought was interesting was how they drew the rats. I have never seen a shaggy rat, and I raised ducks, so I saw a lot of them. They drew them a lot like how they drew menacing wolves.
With lightning fast reflexes *light bound* Hard to believe an old lady with a cat would suddenly starting thinking it's evil - I think it's around 500% more likely that people who didn't have cats came to that conclusion instead. Oh, Disney, how you set our social expectations just to fuel your magic.
I found out about this animated short around ten years ago, but I'd seen this part out of context since I was a kid in the Disney halloween specials. It's very good animation but I always wondered where it came from. And isn't it nice when you've seen all the classic, golden-age Disney animated movies and most of the shorts growing up only to find out there's more?
It used to be featured annually on Sunday night's "The Wonderful World of Disney." (there used to be these big boxes with tubes in them called "televisions," 😂)
This goes in semi reverse. The fear of cats as beasts of the devil happened during the early ages of the plague, mass killings of cats brought about by the Catholic church caused a dramatic drop in the cat population of europe. Causing a spike in plague infested rat populations. Though rats were only the conduit of which the plague spread as it was a mite infestation that was the real cause, rats still bare the stigma of the dark age of history.
Rats ate not evil creatures as they portray but very sweet, social and loving animals. Also they did not spread the black plague, it was the fleas that came with them.
The rats literally carried the disease, but it transferred through the fleas. Yes rats as pets are very sweet, but they are still deemed as pests in many places for good reason
This is why the older generation was able to deal with adversity. As children we were given information in terms that we could understand. We were given the bad with the good.

How I wish with all my heart that she could do it still. She is gone for 6 years now and the pain is not less, I miss her deeply and I just wanted to hug her holding her close to my heart as I used to do. Truly peace and happiness in those moments for both of us.
I have never seen this short before, this is really cool!
Wow!!! What a beautiful brilliant hidden gem. 😊😻👌💯🌟
This kind of stuff was Awesome, the animation feels like it has a soul or something.
😄👍
That animation is god tier.
Any animal can spread plague…not just rats. It’s the flea that carries the plague, and fleas live on all creatures with fur.
I had 6 cats. Now it's 5. I got twins that turn 2 tomorrow. One boy one girl. My daughter loves cats so much it's her favorite word.
I love the art in this !! Awesome.
Same here I miss these classic 2d animation styles
same cloud hands From Legend of Sleepy hollow 2:24
This is cool because I have never even heard of this let alone seen it, and I've been a Disney studio fan for decades. Great stuff.
And to this day black cats are the hardest to find forever homes.
Absolutely heartbreaking. :*(
Same with black dogs 😢
I really like this old school animation. Someone should do a cartoon about Shadow People in this style.
2:33 I always thought was an abandoned swing set with leaves blowing when I was little. I have not seen this scene in years. I use to watch this when it was on A Disney Halloween.
I LOVE cats! That end was so precious!
Narrator sounds like John Dehner Doing his ususal professional job
I loove old cartoons, the look and narration, everything about them.
I didnt even know that, the cat almost went extinct?? really? I cant imagine a world without these amazing cute creatures..
It's probably not true. Disney always had a terrible habit if exaggerating things when ever thy did anything that was supposed to be historical.
I'm sure Luna is grateful to you and remembers you 🌟
Back when cartoons had educations and not just stupid random stuff...
This is two years old but...You...you know there were many cartoons during this age that were just random and not educational, right??
@Blue Dog yes, but rats were a major conductor of the illness, and the imbeciles retarded catholic bastards killed their only barrier: the domestic cats, that's why the plague spreaded. I love cats, I have one which is black as night and in these two days (halloween) I have to close all my doors so he won't get out, he's too friendly and there are bad people who use the poor animals in their voodoo practices... I would shoot them all if I could...
@Blue Dog who carried the flees Rats. When did plague fall back in london in 1666 when the Great fire of london happened. It was rats.
agree
I don't know why this came across my fyp but it's a good watch. It shows how simple minded people can be when it comes to superstition.
Thanks for posting!
When a cat slowly blinks at you, it's a sign they like you.
Absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful
i loved this short as a kid
I'm more of a dog person, but I realize how important cats are. There's a black cat in my neighborhood, that kills dozens of mice/rats a day. I reward him with treats like milk.
Some of this is pretty strong. It's fantastically well made. Only Disney could have done this.
This sure is a different cartoon about cats. Other one's Tom, Sylvester, Mr. Jinx, Punkin Puss, Garfield, the cats from Mighty Mouse have never been portrayed as stealthy hunters or creatures of the night.
Classic cartoon narrated by the incredible John Dehner. Love it!
This is why you shouldn’t judge an entire species as being evil. Fight species hatred!
As I lay here with my two cats, my possum and my Labrador. I love all creatures!!!🖤🖤🖤
I once had a black cat, she was the most loving cat ever! I had two, one gray and one black. My black one was very friendly and lovable, my gray cat wasn’t as friendly, he only wanted me, his owner, but he never harmed anyone. I love and miss them both!
BEAUTIFUL CAT'S
my cat is in the room with me as I'm watching this
I saw this when I was a kid, and then years later I wasn't sure if I dreamed it or not.
The atmosphere of that short reminds me of Night on Bald Mountain from Fantasia.
Anyone noticed that the design of these rats is identical to the big one from Lady and the Tramp?
And Templeton in Charlotte’s Web
This is more than a cartoon. So, many facts are given in the most possible eloquent way, which kids could easily understsnd. Beautifully drawn and coloured town and other things. I particularly like scenes around fireplace in cartoons and other media. Loved it.
Also Brilliant animation and narration!!
I love my daughters black cat named Stella Luna, it brings us great luck in our lives!
This is dope!! Go Disney!
I love the vintage watercolor background and animation.
Did everyone see one of the rats was missing most of its tail at 1:41 when the cat was in pursuit at the swarm?
This goes in semi reverse. The fear of cats as beasts of the devil happened during the early ages of the plague, mass killings of cats brought about by the Catholic church caused a dramatic drop in the cat population of europe. Causing a spike in plague infested rat populations. Though rats were only the conduit of which the plague spread as it was a mite infestation that was the real cause, rats still bare the stigma of the dark age of history.
Thank you for sharing this.... Love this Halloween spirit.
The narration from A Disney Halloween made this segment so much creepier in my opinion
A dark age when humanity looked to religion, instead of reason.
It was the worst time in history, and we should be on guard for it might happen again.
And it’s still happening, even in modern times. Ignorance is a very dangerous thing if it’s left unchecked.
The terrified look on the old lady's face (specifically her eyes at 3:16 and 3:46) legitimately used to keep me up at night lol
This is why the older generation was able to deal with adversity. As children we were given information in terms that we could understand. We were given the bad with the good.
That was surprisingly good AND informative 😍🖤😻🖤😍 A world without cats is just unthinkable 😻
The cats kinda looked realistic
Courtney Byrd2002 rotoscoping animation
the most atmospheric disney cartoon won’t ya say
