  • The horror masterpiece "Silence of the Lambs" premiered 30 years ago in 1991 forever cementing Anthony Hopkins' reputation as the ultimate villain (Hannibal Lecter) and Jodie Foster as the brilliant protagonist (Clarice Starling). The duo reunited to discuss the film that brought them together and what they're currently working on for Variety's Actors on Actors presented by Amazon Studios.
“We didn’t speak too much before the actual read-through,” Foster recalls. “And as you launched into Hannibal Lecter, I felt a chill come over the room. In a way, it was like we were almost too scared to talk to each other after that.”
Hopkins admitted that when he first read the script for "Silence of the Lambs" the name fooled. "I was in London in 1989, doing a play called 'M. Butterfly.' My agent sent a script. He said, 'Why don’t you read this? It’s called ‘Silence of the Lambs.’' I said, 'Is it a children’s story?' It was a hot summer afternoon, and the script came over and I started reading it. After 10 pages, I phoned my agent. I said, 'Is this a real offer? I want to know. This is the best part I’ve ever read.' I read the rest of the script, and Jonathan came over on a Saturday afternoon and we had dinner. And I said, 'Is this for real?' And he said, 'Yeah.' I said, 'OK.' He was such a wonderful guy to work with. I couldn’t believe my luck, and I was scared to speak to you. I thought, 'She just won an Oscar.'"
Hopkins is currently starring in “The Father” (Sony Pictures Classics) and Foster plays a lawyer in “The Mauritanian” (STX Entertainment).

Don’t you wish he did? Yet he’s just so truly grounded, it didn’t even occur to him to be silly- you can also tell he’s very comfortable being himself, which unfortunately, is a grail most 75%+ of actors/actresses never find, and comedians 99% of the time never do. Yet he’s still whimsical and charming and generous, and you can tell he genuinely enjoys reflecting back on his life and success

She's definitely had work. It shows around her lips. Also likely an eyelid lift. But either no Botox or it's been a while. And recently (the last 6 months), she's picked up two horizontal lines that indicate a particular kind of jaw lift.
But *it's her job* . I don't fault any actor for getting work done. They might drop $90 grand and make $3 million dollars as a result. Heck- if I had $40,000 to spare, I'd get an eyelid lift if only for personal comfort.

I saw "The Silence of the Lambs" twice when it aired - a few weeks appart - and the scene that really blew me away was at the end: when realization hit her and after the lights went out in the killer's house. At first she reacted and fumbled drawing her gun, and soon after, the hand holding it started shaking... but mostly, it was the way she breathed... you felt the adrenaline rush, panic held in check by training, but just barely. It was truly mesmerizing.

Jodie Foster is an actor of exceptional talent, depth and beauty who was always ahead of her peers, by the time actors of her age were in their diapers she was making commercials, by the time they learned to speak, she was making movies for Disney, by the time they starting going to the school, she was winning awards and getting nominated for the Oscars, by the time they decided to enter films, Jodie decided to leave it behind and enjoy the ivy league world which she graduated with magna cum laude, by the time her peers had their breakthrough she already had won two Oscars and transitioned to the director's chair. Of course I was young cinephile who took on many emotions while watching movies...and watching Silence of the Lambs on the big screen was one of the most enjoyable, consistently engrossing and horrifying pieces of moving images I had seen at that time in my life! I fell deeply in love with Jodie and wanted to see everything Anthony Hopkins was in. I remember the whole audience gasping and screaming in the theater at certain moments in the film...and on our walk back to the car afterward (at night in the dark), everyone who was also leaving the theater was walking close with their families together, almost paranoid about who was in the darkness. I was 16 when Silence of the Lambs originally came out and I remember one day I skipped school just because. I somehow wound up at this mall that still exists because if I went home my family would find out. I figured I’d watch a movie to pass the time. I knew absolutely nothing about the movie but I believe I picked it only because the movie poster was super cool. At the time the age to get into an R rated movie was 16 so when they asked me for my ID - I was by myself - I freaked out until the ticket booth attendant just nonchalantly gave me my ticket and let me in. I thought I was cool because in my mind’s eye, I really must have seemed like an adult. Anyways, I saw it there, absolutely mesmerized and enthralled beyond imagination. I fell in love with that movie and with Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. I would go on to see it at least 7 more times in the theater that junior year in high school. No skipping though, I promise. And then I saw it endlessly on VHS and then DVD, and now I have it downloaded on my iPod. And I never tire of it. This reunion almost 30 years to the date that I first saw it brings back a flood of memories and a nostalgia for a special time in my life when these phenomenal actors and their work made such an impact on me. Always admired Hopkins lighthearted approach to acting, especially when so many actors take their method (and themselves) so seriously.
You can clearly see he had so much fun playing that character, the glee he has reliving it in this interview.

Two masters of their craft. Brilliant. Could listen to them all day.

I’m glad they could reunite for this awards season and to make each other more at peace with one another by themselves and not just their characters.
