- The horror masterpiece "Silence of the Lambs" premiered 30 years ago in 1991 forever cementing Anthony Hopkins' reputation as the ultimate villain (Hannibal Lecter) and Jodie Foster as the brilliant protagonist (Clarice Starling). The duo reunited to discuss the film that brought them together and what they're currently working on for Variety's Actors on Actors presented by Amazon Studios.
“We didn’t speak too much before the actual read-through,” Foster recalls. “And as you launched into Hannibal Lecter, I felt a chill come over the room. In a way, it was like we were almost too scared to talk to each other after that.”
Hopkins admitted that when he first read the script for "Silence of the Lambs" the name fooled. "I was in London in 1989, doing a play called 'M. Butterfly.' My agent sent a script. He said, 'Why don’t you read this? It’s called ‘Silence of the Lambs.’' I said, 'Is it a children’s story?' It was a hot summer afternoon, and the script came over and I started reading it. After 10 pages, I phoned my agent. I said, 'Is this a real offer? I want to know. This is the best part I’ve ever read.' I read the rest of the script, and Jonathan came over on a Saturday afternoon and we had dinner. And I said, 'Is this for real?' And he said, 'Yeah.' I said, 'OK.' He was such a wonderful guy to work with. I couldn’t believe my luck, and I was scared to speak to you. I thought, 'She just won an Oscar.'"
Hopkins is currently starring in “The Father” (Sony Pictures Classics) and Foster plays a lawyer in “The Mauritanian” (STX Entertainment).

I am English and 83 and I have seen every film Anthony Hopkins has ever made…Lovely to see these two together..Thank you so much for this ..Best wishes to you both from Cheshire. England….
How does it feel to be that old?
Because I want to live to 100 years old, but I'm afraid I'll go senile or I'll lose my mind.
Anthony Hopkins & Jodie Foster were dynamite on screen together. Two true masters of acting.
Agreed 100%
They hardly met during filming of that one...the distance was real ...and she was really scared of him
And she adores him you can see that 💗
i seem to remember reading that they barely talked to each other during the making of lambs....mostly hopkins' doing.
That's true but i skip over the buffalo bill stuff just to get back to hopkins and foster
Her insight about Clarice feeling handicapped and turning that insecurity into her superpower is very interesting and is one of the reasons she’s such an impactful hero
Scott Glen was the perfect Jack Crawford and gave the movie it’s legitimacy and is underrated.
He’s excellent! You’re right. He’s underrated. He was also terrific in Hunt for Red October
Two of my favourite artists and the reason they became my favourite is because of the film. Wow!! Thank you for the reunion!!
Thank you so much for the love and support
two absolute legends
Mr. Hopkins is one of a kind. The joy of being alive.
And what an actor!
Respect in any way.
Two brilliant actors. I would love to see them bought back together for a further sequel.
Thank both of you for this discussion on dimetia.
Lost my mother, after dimetia and the on to Alzheimer's. It was tragic, mostly for her, but also, my sister, my nieces, nephew and myself.
I still have difficulty, knowing at that time that there was nothing I could do to help her.
But watched her pain with confusion.
Every member of her family loved and still love her tons!
god i love anthony hopkins hes so wholesome
Two legends. This was awesome to see.
I'm grateful to Variety for setting this conversation up and the participation of Anthony and Jodie.
February 14th, 1991 I’ll never forget that experience seeing Silence of the Lambs in the theatre. I had not heard of it and blindly went along to the movies with friends. I wasn’t even aware of the title or genre. The theatre was full with only single seating available so we all ended up sitting with strangers.
He is so good. It is ridicuous how much expertise this man has acting. Jody foster is a master too. Two of a kind. I love them.
What a contrast to his first scene in SOTL standing upright which almost made me jump when I first saw it many years ago. Calm, charming & chilling.
Absolutely two of my all time and forever actors! I very much like them as individual people, but as actors..................my........ never, ever a disappointment on the screen.
My very, very best to them both. You are so admired and so loved! Sincerely
Anthony Hopkins is just a great Actor.
I had the honor of meeting Mr. Hopkins while filming in Germany. On a rainy morning, having a nice little breakfast conversation. That really impressed me, thank you.
Silence of the Lambs in my opinion is a film of pure genius, that every time i watch it there feels that there is something different, the phsycology of the story, the way hanibals voice surrounds me to where nothing can distract me while watching, Clarise, for me has an indescribable presence, vunerability, intelligent, fightened and yet assertiveness which is captivating throughout the film which for me is timeless., and then Dragon and all the films surrounding hanibal creates and even bigger picture.. Amazing actors. Pure brilliance...
As an actor it is very uplifting to see two actors talk so lovingly about a past project.
Its hilarious how Welsh he is....just so simplistic, can't be arsed with all the flim flam!!
Coolest thing I've seen on youtube in a long while. it's phenomenal every time he does excerpts from the movie. that last bye Clarice was the icing on this awesome cake.
I love Jodie Foster and Sir Anthony Hopkins! ❤
Thank you very much! 😊
two of the best actors alive
Beautiful to see you both again. Thanks to both of you for sharing all your gifts.
Great and beautiful personalities, I love both of them 💖😘
Wow. So awesome to see this.
And I love that painting behind Jodie.
I just subbed and belled just for this! I'm a HUGE Jodie Foster fan! I even run a Facebook fan club, I'm so glad this happened!!
currently watching this video at work and my god please stop showing those scenes... I don't want to cry here
Profoundly captivating! Two pillars of the screen with so many thrilling insights!
I’ve written a proper sequel to Silence of the Lambs specifically for Jodie and Tony to conclude those characters. If only I knew how to contact either of them :-(
Now they both have Oscar bookends! 🥰
Absolutely fab
these two have so much chemistry together on / off screen.
I loved "The Father"❤
"Goodbye Clarice". Priceless. lmao
Wow! This is so brilliant! Both of them breaking down their characters and their scenes. I love Silence of the Lambs. I actually read the book first before seeing the movie, and its movie version didn't disappoint.
Brilliant actors! I will always love Silence of the Lambs.
Have you people seen "Magic" ?
If you didn't - you should. Just right now.
Yes! Another one of Hopkins great performances. I love him in Remains of the Day too.
Magic is fantastic
Anthony Hopkins , what ever film you are in , you are "ALWAYS" Hannibal to me. God Bless you 👍👍👍
Enjoyed every bit of it my all time favorite Silence of the lambs...Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins both are my favorite mind blowing
How can you not just adore Tony Hopkins. Jodie is so talented. What a pair!
Terrific interview 🙏
So glad they got to engage with each other in a normal setting
These 2 = 🔥
I love them both, so cool so see them both talking about acting
Amazing chating! 2 of my fave actors..greetings from Rio, Brazil.
Anthony and Jody are acting legends.
Both artist are awesome master of there art.
Now that was one of the sweetest things ever!
I've got two of the books he has on his bookcase.. good taste, Sir Anthony.. and I happen to be Welsh.. Kindred spirits lol
I would love to see them do another film together!
My favourite duo ❤
Anthony did deserve the Oscar cus he was outstanding in that movie. HOWEVER, the way the academy baited that Chadwick would win posthumously was terrible. They really abused his death, moved the category, invited his family only then to not give it to him. Made me so furious, especially for Chadwick's family AND Anthony Hopkins.
What an incredible interview!!Epic film (one of my favorites )and actors❤
Spectacular combination! Best episode ever!
WE LOVE YOU BOTH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: the images that inform character - In Silence of the Lambs, there's a scene where Clarice visits a museum looking for information about the moth. She passes a giant assembled skeleton of a T-Rex, but she doesn't even glance at it. She's there for business and has zero attention for anything else. It's one of the great subtle touches that tell you so much about the character.
I love both of them! Brilliant actors!!
This was great to watch, thanks.
I actually never thought they would cross paths again. Jodie Foster once said in an interview that she was terrified of Anthony Hopkins.
1:18 Should have said his line: ''...Quid Pro Agent Starling, Quid Pro Quo!....I tell you things, you tell me things...'' 😂😂😂
He looks amazing at 83! I love Tony - he will be greatly missed when he decides to retire!
“Hi Tony! :)” Ok i’m already dead
I was expecting Tony to open up with " Hello Clarice "
I love these two actor's always. I so wish I could find more movies like the ones they make that are different than "Comic Book" movies. I didn't even know that Foster was still making movies. Go figure? :-)
Holy cow, Jodie really?? wow 🤯how gifted & blessed 🙏🏽
'He just comes in...Like a silent shark' 😁. I defenitely see that with hannibal
Jodie is still stunningly beautiful.
Great movie!
The two popes was amazing !
Man I wish this was done in person than through videochat!
after 30 years i noticed Anthony Hopkins blinked 1 time in Silence of Lamb while saying "Chianti" :-D
Wow....I thought Jodie Foster retired....amazing conversation.
Wow, this was something special.
I've always wanted to meet Anthony Hopkins and congratulate him for a forgotten moment in his forgotten film SHADOWLANDS. This film would have been a remembered masterpiece except for the miscasting of Debra Winger. Her performance is uneven. Anyway -- there's a scene where the character Hopkins plays must finally leave the safety of academia behind and embrace the terrible world of emotions, love, and loss. His friend is dying of cancer, and in this scene is perhaps some of the best acting I've ever seen. Not the 'kiss goodnight' moment but the hallway scene just after it.

F this..regardless of "their" age ..i still need a sequel...maybe a *finale
What an absolute TREAT!!! Thank you both for this!!
I am absolutely a fan! You are a BEAUTIFUL human being! Thank you so much for bringing such rich and amazing personalities to fear, respect, empathize with! You are truly a gift sir! How extraordinary! You've just made my year! You and Daniel Day Lewis are my top 2 favorite humans! EVER Jodie Foster is absolute magic! Thank you this means a great deal to me!
@anthony hopkins I am absolutely stunned!!! I'm just beside myself! I can't express enough in words how much your work means to me! I'm just bristling right now! Not start struck but honored! I just respect your work. You have this air in Everything I've seen anyway, you bring actual life and depth. I've always loved watching performances, my cousin Lesley is the stage manager for the community college here in Washington. She's also a story teller very entertaining. So when i was 6 i lived with my grandma i had been severely abused so was placed with her. So my cousin Leslie arranged for me and my grandma to see their production of Cinderella. I was absolutely spellbound! Then she brought me to the back and i got too meet all the actors! They seemed so surreal in costumes and makeup. It literally saved me. I went to visit my mom and brother and sister i was 10, i made some changes to Jack and the Beanstalk and got some things together and a couple cousins, made tickets for the adults and put on jack and beanstalk. Everyone was laughing so hard it was a highlight of my childhood. You and a few others bring me back to that place. So exciting and powerful. I love the over dramatic style of the classics. Movies were meant to i feel be like imagination outside of your mind. Sharing what lives in your mind. I find it brave and awe inspiring! I cannot tell you enough your contribution to this world is very important! A billion years in the future you'll still be a name associated with greatness!
@anthony hopkins I do but isn't that where scammers lure people? I would be absolutely devastated if this isn't real! I'm just being cautious. I would be so honored to talk more with you if this is you. I'm a fan yes but also being that I have always loved the arts. When i was little my mother told me that I'd always be drawn to Picaso lol! Funny. Silence of the Lambs is significant for me. I couldn't wait to see it so that's what i did on my honeymoon! My grandma kept our 2 littles and we watched that. I watched it so many times. I read your text and hear your voice as I'd imagine you'd say it. I find that funny. One of my favorite scenes when he and Agent Starling are speaking for the first time, and talking Buffaloe Bill and trophies, you say that you didn't keep trophies, she replies so matter of fact well no you ate toy yours, the reaction was beyond brilliant! That pause and subtle smile and slight head tilt was so ON POINT! If you've ever seen an interview with a serial killer it's the same reaction! I mean golden! So unsettling! Magic! I'm afraid I must leave it here tonight I'm very tired. I look forward to speaking more with you. I'm so lifted and happy. I really truly hope this is actually happening. I won't use whatsapp, at all. My email address is caupain66@gmail.com😊🦄
@anthony hopkins I'm so sorry to be doubtful. I havea bit of a cautious nature. I'm just very happy to talk with you. My daughter started crying when she realized I want being funny! Haha! She's. beautiful little sweet heart. All of my littles are huge fans of yours.
@anthony hopkins I will look forward to it with frenzied anticipation! Until then be safe, and take care. It's absolutely been the highlight of my life next to my kids.
Two Great actors. Loved this!😊😍👍
The handsomest and the most beautiful. Truly.
You can watch any Foster or Hopkins movie indiscriminately. The few which aren't superb still aren't half bad. Interesting talk.
be good to see them in a new chapter,,,, if possible
Versus ?
@@siranthonyhopkinshq1690 meet up again? if the story would allow for that?
@@joolzcustom5808 Based on?
@@siranthonyhopkinshq1690 well, I was thinking that Hannibal has been hidden away for many years (maybe institutionalised?) and now in his old age, having seemed to be defeated and harmless, he somehow gets out again, and is as switched on as he was when younger, and in fact has a whole new level of sinister now! As the plot develops (not thought that through yet) he goes to America ad seeks out Starling, as he as never got her out of his mind (and she has never stopped thinking about him). The pot then grows around hat relationship. It need NOT be all predictable, we could se a more emotional/vulnerable side to Hannibal maybe? So much could be built into this plot .... anyway, just my thoughts.
@@siranthonyhopkinshq1690 sorry if I have seemed presumptuous in suggesting this, I had an O level in drama way back in my school days... but am no film expert! Please don't think me to be a smarty pants, I was just thinking aloud really :-) Joolz
Sem duvida o melhor ator de cinema.Assiste Antony hopinks e concentracao do inicio ao fim.
woah! was not expecting this
whoever was the one that put them together needs a raise
Two legends....
Yessss!!
That raise should be taken for not sending them microphones to record good quality sound
This is the most overused, recycled comment of all time. I have literally seen it in every single one of these actors on actors videos.
So that tells me it must be the person working for variety that is saying it!
Thank you for the love and support
Aww they were so cute in the way they ended their conversation.
"Bye Clarice"
"Bye Tony. Bye Dr. Lecter."
@anthony hopkins it’s not every day you see Anthony Hopkins in a RUclips comment section.
You’re one of the best actors I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing.
You could tell she really didn't want to say that.
Jodie Foster is so comfortable with her skin and her body; any other acters will be gone under the knife many times by now. And Sir Anthony Hopkins a legend! Two legends.
I believe she and Mery Streep have said they'll never do it.
She looks awesome though.
But still look better than who did it
Jody has always been so beautiful. I’m glad she understands that and hasn’t tried to remain young
It's nice to see celebrities who would rather age naturally, to be themselves instead of following that trend of the Hollywood plastic look.
Silence of the lambs is one of those movies you think is really good when you watch it the first time, then it becomes better everytime you watch it again.
Same with the books. I read the trilogy through every few years just to remind myself how good it is and every time it gets better..
I enjoyed it. Great movie
an incredible #masterpiece 🖤🤍
Indeed. Has great re-watch value. I never get sick of it
Same with The Elephant Man (in which Tony plays another doctor: Sir Frederick Treves who displays such compassion and humanity - worlds apart from Lector) it’s one I always end up watching to the end if I land on it channel-surfing!
Clarice always had to talk to Hannibal through glass and now Jodie has to talk to Anthony through zoom.
Haha yeah good observation.. 👍😊
So e things never change...
Safer that way
Computers have glass screens
Jodie has the greatest smile ever! It literally makes her look 20 years younger on the spot.
I always love when Jodie Foster interviews or speaks to other actors. Her comments and questions are always insightful and show that she really watched their films. She also gives them room to breathe and talk.
She's a director and producer in her own right, it's easy to see why she'd ask more informed and insightful questions
Absolutely 💯
She is fantastic.
That's why she is a genius
Jodie's a great interviewer... But they both speak so fast, especially Jodie, I watched at .75, then at .50 to get every word...
Someone please put these two in another movie together. It would be an instant hit.
Hannibal, the sequel to the silence of the lambs, was offered to foster and she turned it down, so Hopkins ended up doing the movie with moore.
Jodie waited 30 years for the pandemic so she wouldn't have to do this face to face...
In fact there is more truth in your quote than one would really believe... she really did avoid him. There was hardly one scene in the whole movie were they have really have met in person.
In an interview she did years ago she said she avoided Hopkins between takes because she wanted to keep his character as real as possible to her.
😂good one. Because it's kinda true
@@jonathanrex no. Fake news
@@windsorkid7069 Great recollection
Anthony actually helps me look forward to aging and all life may bring. What a beautiful human being.
Unless you get dementia ofc.
I totally get what you mean! He seems graceful and just kind. Older and getting better even in his craft. It’s a wonderful thing. I love that he’s still challenging himself with piano and anything else he can get his hands on to stay mentally active. I hope he has a loving home environment around him. I truly wish Anthony all the best.
Amen; you're so right.
Then you need to watch the irishman
Missed opportunity for Anthony to open the call with "Hello, Clarice".
Don’t you wish he did? Yet he’s just so truly grounded, it didn’t even occur to him to be silly- you can also tell he’s very comfortable being himself, which unfortunately, is a grail most 75%+ of actors/actresses never find, and comedians 99% of the time never do. Yet he’s still whimsical and charming and generous, and you can tell he genuinely enjoys reflecting back on his life and success
He made up for it with “bye Clarice”
A few people commented before watching the whole thing apparently.
I mean that's so ironic because he never says "Hello, Clarice" he says 'Well, Clarice" or 'Good Morning, Clarice"
@Angelbob77 so well and wise comment.
It’s so incredible living in this age being able to have access to interviews like this. I can’t imagine living a couple decades ago and not being able to see such a freeing conversations between actors like this. Interviews before were so curated and usually between a tv host. They still are. But here, two actors/artists can speak to each other like the friends they are.
“Inside the Actors Studio” was where we were a decade ago although it was only solo interviews but a fantastic insight nonetheless.
actually some of the TV interview conversations in the 70s and 80s weren't that bad. Things for sure took a bad turn in the 90s, 00s and early 10s though .
@Marina E why are you acting pressed and as if the comment was insulting or untrue?
@@peterkirby7546 The Dick Cavett show interviews are priceless.
Thinking back on the great actors from the 50-60s would've been great on this show no matter which studio they belonged to.
It 's so lovely to see them reunited! ! I almost started crying when Anthony said" Bye, Clarise." and then Jodie responded saying," Bye, dr. Lecter!" Amazing moment!
Darn it. Now I wish I hadn't read the comments first.
he said "bye clarice" when he left - dead haha
Plot twist, its not Anthony Hopkins its Hannibal Lecter.
@@gregrizal5043 💀
@@gregrizal5043 hehe. So classic. He is such an amazing actor
Jodie is an example what real beauty is without her youthfulness and the plastic surgeries and Anthony has the extraordinary charisma and his personality glows with wisdom and they are just amazing. Lovely actors and amazing interviews.
wow. Is that why they couldn't abide each other on set? yeah. Sounds like beauty........
Damn right. She still looks amazing. Idk why a bunch of these other actresses cant just take aging gracefully case-in-point Lara Flynn Boyle.
Good on her.
She's definitely had work. It shows around her lips. Also likely an eyelid lift. But either no Botox or it's been a while. And recently (the last 6 months), she's picked up two horizontal lines that indicate a particular kind of jaw lift.
But *it's her job* . I don't fault any actor for getting work done. They might drop $90 grand and make $3 million dollars as a result. Heck- if I had $40,000 to spare, I'd get an eyelid lift if only for personal comfort.
She's 61.
@@macmcleod1188what exactly do you believe indicates that she's had work done? I can't see anything "around her lips" nor do I spot anything on her jaw. Her eyes look natural too
