This helps a lot. I have a sram 8 speed derailleur w/no clutch, and been looking for a derailleur with a clutch, but didn’t know of any 8 speed ones. Im a teenager who doesn’t have enough money to go to the 10 speed, but the box 4 sounds like a good deal for someone like me.
Look at Micro shift Advent if on a budget , it is their 9 speed clutched system. I just put this groupset on my bike for $250 Aud inc new chain and i upgraded the shifter to the pro trigger a bit more refined feel and aesthetics. It has a range of 11 42, can still use same 8 speed hub as long as its a free hub
The interesting thing is that is interesting is that The Bike Hippie was able to adjust it, even it's listed as non adjustable, but maybe he got wrong, to his advantage. I haven't seen that clutch taken apart or taken out of the rear derailleur, but with the cover off it looks the same, but I don't know if the clutch is the same.
My box 2 prime 9 setup is a little stiff-shifting, but never misses a shift, and is SO quiet. Drops around a foot to flat, still a happy chain! Pretty amazing stuff. Small American company too, so nice there, too.

Cool info! I have a Axum DP version, and want a clutched derailer for it. I want a better fork, but I'll probably never be offroad due to my weight, and age. I honestly feel the Axum's frame is a quality starting point for a beginner. Maybe you could do a video on forks for the Axum. Thanks keep up the great work my friend.
Im 420 lbs. Plus im 59 with a beat up body. Both shoulders, both knees need replacement, and just had ankle replacement late last year. Im not the best candidate to be chancing falls. If i could find really tame trails id chance it.
Doom Racing Green trails and gravel roads. Stay away from blue trails, because the speeds they usually carry can lead to serious injury for somebody inexperienced and in the shape you described. Ditto black and red, which also add technical challenges. But green are easy, mostly flat, not technical at all. Gravel roads are self-explanatory.
Just checking back in; on my ride today, I had chain slip issues and noise on a few gears even with the box four shifter and derailleur. I took a hard look at the stock cassette and discovered that I've got bent teeth! There's utterly no reason to have that with the small amount of riding I've done except low quality material in the manufacturing process. I went ahead and ordered the box four cassette, which will get me a better climbing gear anyway.
Heard decent things about the advent x, but I went with the schimano xt groupset 1x11 46t. on my axum for about the same price. Chain included. So far, so great.
Cant wait to see that schwinn fully upgraded. Would love to see a video comparing it to your other bikes, how much does cheap bike slow you down? Biggest time waster on trails on cheap bikes is adjusting the seat post... To complete the budget build you might change the parts bin forks for a manitou markhor/ machete manitou seem to produce the same quality as rockshox for maybe 20% cheaper and obviously alot less bling.
Imo that advent x groupset is nice but if your upgrading your drivetrain you dont need a specific groupset, pick and choose your own parts. Personally on a budget I'd go 11 speed shimano, prices should be reduced with switch to 12 speed, I'd get xt shifters because of the multi release and a new 11s deore derailleur few grams heavier but cheaper and as durable. Something that is often not thought about but reduces so much slap is a narrow wide chainring, you dont even need a clutch. As for cranks try if you dont already have hollowtech 2 cranks if you need new cranks go 2nd hand as you save loads and cranks are as durable as rocks anyway.
nicely done., very informative, and easy to understand, well showcased.👌 2:25 the crazy movement required for shifting was also something that was bothering me with SHimano M9000, but those did not fit me, none of shifters I have seen so far would fit me. I use Archer D1X Trail so I don't have to deal suffer from these issues, no fatigue, and easy & fast shifting.
Have used both. Slx shifting is slightly smoother due to hyperglide, and the clutch system is a lot more easier. The cassette is bad though. The jump from 2 to 1 is massive. From a 37t to a 46t makes your cadence real bad. And the shimano clutch tends to be unreliable sometimes. The advent x is cool! Here in my country it pretty much is a rarity. The shifter has better build quality and feels robust! The clutch could take some work though. The ratchet system is cool but doesn't bite immediately. which is great?? It makes shifting still easier compared to shimano. (Esp if you have the clutch tension real tight!). Tbh it's personal preference. But the advent x is slightly lighter with a robust quality. Mean while shimano is mass produced and doesn't look as cool as the advent. + The blackout look makes it look like sram, as some riders have told me. Both are good. But they have each their unnoticeable advantages.
SunRace has a 12 speed upgrade kit that you can get for around 200 euros - and it has a 11-50 cassette that is HG compatible! I would love to hear your opinion or maybe even see you test it - or even better get the cassette only and mix it with other 12s parts :)
Great vid bro! The comparison is so comprehensive and just nice overall! But I have a question: What's that chainstay protector at 0:16? That thing's looking rad! Would love to have it on my bike as well!
Another great video. Perhaps I’ll give my wife the box stuff and put the Advent on my Axum. Did you happen to weigh the stock cassette? I don’t think I saw that in the video.
After using Advent-x for 6 months through snow, mud. and dust it is holding up well. My only quam is that the shifting feels a bit foggy. Unlike shimano you don't get a crisp feedback signal that you've push enough. Eventually it becomes second nature. For someone just happy to get out this is fine. For the racer who has to have crisp shifts this will likely be an irritation that doesn't go away.
You should try the ltwoo AX although it doesn't have a clutch(which sucks) it's pretty durable and smooth Anddd it's a 1x12 but there's an 11 speed option if you need
Possibly but I don't see these things as competing assemblies. They are targeted to different groups (Shimano/SRAM have nothing being offered in the niche of say Box Prime 9 or Advent X). I ended up getting Advent X (even knowing the Deore 12 was coming) because I wanted to upgrade my range (and want to do it on 2 wheels) without needing to overhaul my entire drive train. I'm running 10spd. Deore, while great value, still requires me to change hubs, BB, and crankset. I don't have the $$$ for this as a poor grad student. Once I get a real income, I'll be going with whatever is the new thing at that time. There's just, I think, a lot more of us out here that want more range but really don't want to deal with being forced onto new hub standards. These Box/Microshift components hit a niche that I think is larger than people at Shimano/SRAM may realize.
@@cjohnson3836 Good point. There's always some people who upgrade their old builds with minimal budget. Especially need for new rear hub makes Deore a lot more expensive.
i put the advent X on my old TREK mtb rebuild, moving to 1x10 from 3x7 - Works absolutely fantastic! I ride mostly gravel, single and double track with a 40T wide-narrow chainring though I do have a 34T available if i need to switch. Would definitely recommend the microshift. In fact I liked it so much I also invested in the R8 8x2 road shifters to upgrade my very old (1985) trek road bike from 2x6 with downtube shifters to 2x8 with integrated handlebar/brake shifters- They turned out to be awesome too and worked prefectly with my older shimano 105 front and rear deraileurs. went from 12-27 on the rear to 11-34 with 50/39 on the chain rings.
Ok you put a 10 or 11 speed cassett on a stock Axum hub with a new chain? If so i didnt think that was a option. Im a noOb to mountain bikes, but Love my Axum.
Really? I found that my Box 4 has a significantly lesser clutch tensioner then any other drivetrain I have tried. My theory is that the 2 tooth-shorter chain you’re using on the 11-40 rather than Box’s 11-42 made the harder gears have stronger tension
Not going to lie, I'm going to upgrade my CO-OP DRT 1.1s (great budget hardtail, stick drivetrain sucks, though a simple DIY chain tensioner goes a LONG way) 3x7 Shimano tourney drivetrain to a good, budget (under $150 for everything) 1x9 (+). This video helped, thanks!
Anyway you could give us an update on the other parts from the budget build, I got an Axum, but it looks like it is gonna be months on some of the parts you have in the original upgrade video. Forks are impossible to find, headset bearing won't get delivered til the end of summer if ordered, brakes went up $30 (is it still a good buy). Would like to see your choice for parts if you had to pick again in a parts drought economy. Think I am going to stick with the box 4 stuff on drivetrain, curious to see how the Advent lasts. Would love to talk on it to get some advice if you have a discord.
I like box four, but find the clutch mech a little awkward, when removing or reinstalling the wheel, a clutch lever would make it easier🤣but its probably me🤔
I still drop chains occasionally on 2 of my bikes with xt and Deore clutched derailleurs. But my bike with Shimano SLX non clutch derailleur and inexpensive ebay Fouriers brand chainguide never drops chain.
When you say Advent is about $30 more, you leave out the included chain in Box groupsets. Add a decent chain, and you have to compare Advent X to Box 3 prime 9 set, which is an upgrade over box 4.
@@mtbsavant5414 Thanks! According to the tracker everything arrives tomorrow along with the NX cranks and bottom bracket and I can't wait to see the difference. Only a wheel upgrade stands in the way of me owning a 2000 dollar wal mart bike lol

The bad news is not that “the sheer number of options can be overwhelming for a lot of people”. They cost $400, that’s the bad news.

I just ran the Advent 1x9 speed system on my local trails ,it ran flawless not one chain drop even with my butchered 3x crank rivets drilled to make it a 1x .Really smooth shifting all day.And really cheap .
Good stuff. Nice to heard the 9 speed is durable and working well for a lot of people. I expect the same for the 10 speed as well.
Great view with clear detail...
Glad you liked it!
I found the shimano M6000 derailler, shifter, cassette 11-46T, front chainring. and chain for just over $100 on ebay new! Lots of budget options out there. $100 to completely put new drive on your bike is a bargain, shifts amazing!
It's solid. Highly recommended
MTB Savant thank u
jed8five i have an 8 speed, and just getting derailleur and shifter would be best for me, not a whole new drivetrain
Had a similar experience with the Box Prime 9 derailleur. SO stiff. Non adjustable (atleast the level I bought).
Thanks for the feedback!
@@mtbboy1993 Im pretty sure every modern Box derailleur uses the exact same "tri-pack" clutch, they simply say you cannot adjust the lower end models.
@@Sandriell possible only Box Two and Box one, the others might not I am not sure. but To me those are the only ones worth getting as they can be fully rebuilt with new bushings.
I have a seven speed is the box eight speed fits on my bike .I really enjoy your video. Thank you .
@MTB Savant
Thanks, great review. I really like your style. So many of the MTB channels on youtube seem to think that everyone has thousands of dollars of disposable income for this kind of thing. I know I don't need or want the stuff the pros use. I just want something that works for a regular guy.
I have the box four derailleur on my Vitus nucleus hardtail, and it rocks!
Need an update, done anything else to the Axum
Seems like a great quality budget choice for the microshift option. I am considering this myself!
I have Box 2 11 speed and it is a little heavy shifting also, but not a big deal, you get used to it quick.
Totally get used to it. Not a big deal
Good stuff. I have a friend who just got the Advent X. We are going to install it this week so I'll be able to see it in person. I'm interested in seeing if the shift feel is the same as the 9 spd Advent. Can't imagine it'd be much different.
I'm sure it's similar. The rubber shift lever on the "pro" version of the shifter fells really good!
@@mtbsavant5414 I want a Pro version for the 9 spd with thumb/thumb levers.
Acolyte works on 11-48T Advent X shifter and cassette.
Wow, XTR vs Microshift showdown next? I don't even know how you're going to do that, same bike? I imagine a different hub.
“Making it sound more expensive” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I also noticed slack in this clutch but bike is really silent. And the derailleur is really stiff in comparison to shimano lower end stuff
Indeed
Im running a Box Two, 11s 11-46 cassette, Box Two derailleur and Box Two shifter and theyre SOOOOOO much better than the SRAM/Shimano stuff that came on my Diamondback. WELL worth the money.
Box two is what I went with.
have you tried adjsuting the clutch? or is that just some people that get wrong clutch put in by great luck? I have Bow One X-Wide, I haven't tried Box Two.
Why would weight be an issue for off-road?
Right on good idea!
I have the Box Four Shifter and Derailleur
It’s Outstanding!!!!!
Love it
Right on! It's a great bolt on option for someone with existing 8 speed stuff

Great video. I've been considering putting the MicroShift on a 2006 bike of mine that came as a 2x9.
Good choice!
Thanks for the details on the Advent.
Great video
great video. very detailed and very clearly Spoken. thanks much. i just got myself advent x for my Ragley Big AL
The XT is inferior.
Should have went with the SLX if you were going that route.
I’ve been thinking about this for my sons bike. Thanks!
Well I just ordered the box 4 for my old Trek. Trying to get it going for friends to ride.
It's a solid setup for sure
@@mtbsavant5414 Yeah I have the Box 2 and Box 1 setup on I few of my other bikes. Definitely built like tanks.
Just placed my order for the box derailleur and shifter sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh
Thank u so mutch for this vid I’m upgrading my 2016 KONA LANI and I coldent resist that 10speed I love it
Cant wait to see that schwinn fully upgraded.
Coming soon. I've upgraded just about everything at this point lol
I ran the m8000 11 speed on my Yeti when I built it almost 3.5 years ago. Solid stuff for sure.
Great review
Thnx!
Great stuff! I was considering the AdventX for a bike packing bike build. 😛
Great video! Very informative!
nicely done., very informative, and easy to understand, well showcased.👌
2:25 the crazy movement required for shifting was also something that was bothering me with SHimano M9000, but those did not fit me, none of shifters I have seen so far would fit me.
I use Archer D1X Trail so I don't have to deal suffer from these issues, no fatigue, and easy & fast shifting.
Aww man, I was waiting and waiting but I pulled the trigger on 1x11 slx :/ cost about the same as the micro shift so I guess it’s alright.
Nobody's ever been criticized for running Shimano ha
Are you using the SLX with the Axum?
I seriously love your videos. Good stuff👍
Glad you like them!
Curious to see how the advent x holds up long term. I've heard some concerns. Thanks for great content!
Yeah the only question for me is how quickly the large gear of the cassette lasts considering it's alloy.
Also Velo Mine has the box 2 11 speed groupset a for $139 shipped.
Great vid bro! The comparison is so comprehensive and just nice overall!
But I have a question: What's that chainstay protector at 0:16? That thing's looking rad! Would love to have it on my bike as well!
lol, it's from a Santa Cruz Megatower. I made a video about it last year, but it's since been sold out for a while.
@@mtbsavant5414 Ok, thanks! Definitely still gonna be taking a look at it every now and then to see if it's available
You can buy a slx m7100 (12s) groupset with zrace cassette (11-52t) and chain for the same price ($167)
How much does that cassette weigh?
@@mtbsavant5414 probably a lot 😂😂😂
Another great video. Perhaps I’ll give my wife the box stuff and put the Advent on my Axum. Did you happen to weigh the stock cassette? I don’t think I saw that in the video.
Weight of the stock cassette was almost identical to the Advent at about 417 grams
Your wife will be waiting for you at the top while you walk your bike up. The box stuff is made to take a beating.
You should try the ltwoo AX although it doesn't have a clutch(which sucks) it's pretty durable and smooth
Anddd it's a 1x12 but there's an 11 speed option if you need
AdventX lookin really good rn. Kinda need a 10sp wide range atm that uses HG. Hows the build quality of the mech and shifter?
Surprisingly good. The shifter has a rubber feel to the lever and the derailleur appears solid!
Is it just me or does the box 4 look like an old Suntour piece? I kinda like it.
Shimano's new 12-speed Deore is gonna put some pressure on them. Less than $200 for derailleur, shifter, chain and a 11-51 cassette.
At 2:45, you really need to shorten the housing going to your derailer.
Try the schimano alivio m4000 9 gear derailleur. Wont even have to change your shifter.
Clutch?
No clutch but I did put a chain tensioner on. Works sweet.
i put the advent X on my old TREK mtb rebuild, moving to 1x10 from 3x7 - Works absolutely fantastic!
Yes it's definitely possible. There's more options for the HG driver body than ever before!
Would a chain guide work instead of a clutch derailleur?
Yes
@@mtbsavant5414 thanks! I guess I'm gonna get a chain guide cause it's a lot cheaper
Really? I found that my Box 4 has a significantly lesser clutch tensioner then any other drivetrain I have tried. My theory is that the 2 tooth-shorter chain you’re using on the 11-40 rather than Box’s 11-42 made the harder gears have stronger tension
Perhaps
Good question, why do we spend $ for performance we’re not good enough to take advantage of?
There's reasons. Whether it's worth it for some people is the real question.
Saw a dude talking to himself climbing sunset trail at JMP with a chest mount. Probably was you lol
I've been known to do that once in a while.
I like box four, but find the clutch mech a little awkward, when removing or reinstalling the wheel, a clutch lever would make it easier🤣but its probably me🤔
Shimano XT 11 speed 11-46 is only $229 on eBay for the cassette, RD, chain, and shifter.
I still drop chains occasionally on 2 of my bikes with xt and Deore clutched derailleurs. But my bike with Shimano SLX non clutch derailleur and inexpensive ebay Fouriers brand chainguide never drops chain.
I can get a tried and true all Shimano Deore drivetrain with shifter, chain, cassette, and clutched derailleur for $120.
Deore is game changing
Where’s that upcoming vid on the advent x vs too range shimano
I'd take the box if you don't need it I think it be a good setup for my 7 speed setup on my Cannondale trail 8
When you say Advent is about $30 more, you leave out the included chain in Box groupsets. Add a decent chain, and you have to compare Advent X to Box 3 prime 9 set, which is an upgrade over box 4.
How to buy a Schwinn Axum:

Step 2: Upgrade EVERYTHING
Goes for everything. Not just the axum. ;)
@@mtbsavant5414 haha true
Great video, thanks!
I just ordered this setup for my Axum based 100% off this excellent video. Will the stock derailleur hanger work?
Yep, stock hanger is totally fine!
@@mtbsavant5414 Thanks! According to the tracker everything arrives tomorrow along with the NX cranks and bottom bracket and I can't wait to see the difference. Only a wheel upgrade stands in the way of me owning a 2000 dollar wal mart bike lol
Can you compare it with the SRAM eagle axs
Really enjoyed this video but don’t understand what you mean by Shimano feel with SRAM shift quality??
Not as forgiving as Shimano. I can get the MS and SRAM to shift well but it takes an effort to do so
Great video!
Great comparison! I’m actually considering replacing my current SRAM SX Eagle with the Microshift Advent X. Initially I was thinking about GX Eagle until I saw this and the price and weight is impressive. What are your thoughts on those options?
