With the potentially increased video output I like to imagine it as Paul and Quinns are locked in a room together with nothing for sustenance other than board games. And.... they're shirtless. I dunno, it's my imagination.
The jokes! The references! The dramatic camera angles! This is such a great review: entertaining, funny, creatively shot. Bravo, guys! Thanks for all your hard work!
Oh man what a nice idea of replacing the little cubes with actual spice pods. I am so sick of tiny little cubes. That would make your game smell GREAT.
Glad to see Paul and Quinns playing off one another. It's like the old days, but with all the lessons that come from having done this for 7-ish years. Keep up the good work.
I was really bummed when I heard that Paul has been having some unspecific visa/residency issues with Canada.... but..... no, I really didn't like that that was happening, really...... but........... selfishly............ when I learned he would be moving nearby to also-moved Quinns, and the prospect of those two doing regular double-trouble in-person review videos, I felt really happy, and this video is Exhibit A of why. I'd gladly see you two stop making duo-deals because Paul is free to return, but in the mean time, I'm secondarily glad to watch you united again.
I could be a bit out of date info-wise, but Paul's back in England because he's had his application for permanent residence in Canada denied and his visa revoked after an exceedingly long period of waiting to even hear if he had been rejected
Well you guys nailed it with that prediction at the end. They called it the Century Big Box, it's currently £50 on Zatu (RRP £70) and they seem to have just discontinued the second and third...after we got Spice Road and wanted to complete the set.
Past 2020 and yet no BigBox with all 3 games in sight... but possibly a review about the third game and the resulting 3 possible combos with the others? :D Good work guys, cheers! :)
Woof, the art. Looks like it's trying to impress people who only intake visual art for extended periods of time through Euro games. Imagine how handsome it'd be if the cards were 100% artsy iconography with delicate ornamentation or where you only see hands or ill-defined figures around products or contracts; having humans or those oddly detailed islands is so unnecessary. Excellent video, by the way! Can't believe how much high quality stuff you guys put out.
I did think the exact same. its such a shame. Also to make the most expensive thing be brown ... brown is just a weaker color than yellow, red, green, etc. Liked the more bold color choices in the expansion, however.
I picked up a (very) lightly used copy of Spice Road from the LBGS for $15. I searched for how to play and saw this on the list. Are there ‘classic’ board game review awards? This was quite possibly the best video review I’ve ever seen-and I watched *quite* a few!
I haven't started watching the video yet but I'm already excited to see you guys together again! ♡ please keep making thia amazing work! good vibes from Mexico!
Travelling on a subway to a play with my infrequent-gamer SO, and she recognised Spice Road. She wanted to hear why I was laughing so hard, so I let her listen to the rest of it. She loved it. Thank you. She is interested in watching more of your videos of the games that she's played.
Some cool stuff about Spice Road Classic that deserves a mention and is easy to neglect: using a trade card on your turn lets you transform _any multiple_ of its components. That 2-red -> 2-brown trade? It can act like 4-red -> 4-brown, or 6 -> 6, etc. Employing these multi-trades gives you a _huge_ turn advantage over the other players and is almost always a good decision. The "rest" mechanic is a great measure of how efficiently your engine operates. New players only notice this after making the mistake of resting every other turn, so they can keep re-playing some amazing farm card they got. Since resting is _losing a turn,_ those people end up getting barely more than half as many turns as other players. Also, resting often with a lot of unplayed cards necessarily means you spent turns and resources _buying cards you aren't using!_ However, one fun thing it's missing from Splendor is the "screw you" mechanic of reserving prizes purely to keep other players from getting them.
I'm happy with the review because this comes just as I decided to buy Spice Road and now it's too late to cancel the order. So I'm glad to be told to make up my own mind. Now the only one who can vindicate my opinion is myself, and every other boardgame reviewer.
This is an old review, BUT, I do love SUSD and I have to say Century: Golem Edition, is the best production of this game. I like Splendor, but I love Golem edition, and I have to say, I like it MORE, personally. Certainly it corrects the art, making it wonderful, and the gems are way better than the spice cubes. I don't even feel compelled to own the Golem equivalent of Eastern Wonders, the base game is plenty good. Again, tho, love the reviews.
Personally? I love Spice Road FAR more than Splendor. Spice Road feels like a friendly race, and when you get a good engine going...well, I say it's the best "flow" of a game I've ever felt. In comparison, Splendor felt cutthroat and mean. Hogging many of one particular gem, grabbing cards with a bank to deprive others of them, and eventually lording a gem empire over others. Not to say cutthroat games can't be fun, but not what I want with these kind of themes and gameplay. But I DO agree with your assessment of the Spice Road art and components...so I got the golem edition which at least has better art (all unique victory cards and trade cards altered to match what's being gotten/traded)...which doesn't really work with Eastern Wonders? Also...I recently have been reviewing your videos since I learned of this group through the War of the Ring review, and is Paul just...more negative than everyone else? Is that his role? To be the cynic? Because he seems to clash on so many decisions and constantly vote against recommendations the others like. But in many episodes he's the psychotic, obsessive one? Maybe he and I just have opposite opinions on what to look for in a board game, so I'm more critical of him...being more critical about games I like. But sometimes I disagree with the others but don't react as badly, so I dunno.
This was REALLY helpful as I'm looking at the Century: Golem Edition. Any thoughts on that series? The third of the trilogy just came out. The first two look like similar mechanics to the Century (spicy) edition. Maybe you'll do a video on the Golem Edition Trilogy. That would be great! Love you guys and I will keep watching because you continue to make me laugh and help me decide on what games to add to my collection!
You've probably figured this out by now, but for anyone else reading this comment, the Golem Edition games are the exact same games as the Spice Editions. The gameplay and mechanics are exactly the same, just with a Golem retheme. Century: Spice Road = Golem Edition ----- Century: Eastern Wonders = Golem: Eastern Mountains ----- Century: A New World = Golem: An Endless World
I think this review, and the rules, don't make it clear enough that harvesting cards can only be played once per turn (as expected) but "transform" cards can be used as many times as you can afford the input. This means that you don't only just upgrade what you can but prepare your stock to most efficiently transform stacks.
I've played Spice road half a dozen times, and enjoyed it a lot. However, on my last playthrough I felt like a strategy clicked with me that made the game a lot less fun. Often times in spice road there is a particular contract that is most appealing to all the players, perhaps it has a high point value AND has a gold coin sitting on it for example. Lets assume the cost of that contract is 4 brown cubes. I may race one or two other players to satisfy the cost of buying that contract, but if I happen to reach 4 brown cubes first, here's the problem: I can just choose not to purchase the contract. Because everyone's spice collection is public information, and the prices of the contracts are public information, AND because you are obligated to spend an entire turn to purchase a contract... once I have the full cost requirement for that contract I can safely choose not to buy it and keep an eye on every one elses resources. No one is able to buy it out from under me, because as soon as someone else acquires the appropriate cubes I can just purchase it on my next turn anyways. If they don't force me to buy it (which they tend not to, that wastes their time acquiring resources they dont need), then I simply start working towards the 2nd most desirable contract. I found it to be a strong strategy to employ, but also a less fun one. I didn't feel like a spice trader so much as some greedy corporate overlord that was denying my friends satisfaction in the game... I had really hoped that the 2nd game in the series would give players some ability to circumvent this strategy, like special abilities you acquire that would let you take 2 actions in a turn, or force a player to trade spice cubes, etc. I'm hoping game #3 might do this.
hypersapien Well when we played Spice Road we considered this to be a basic mechanic of the game from our first game, and everyone was considering these things in their calculations, and everyone held out on scoring the cards as long as they could. And we still had lots of fun! So I guess it depends on taste :)
your absolutely right Andras, but I dont bring this game to the table frequently enough for my friends to develop those kind of strategies... This is more of a casual game at my place. And compared to other games I've played, it just seems like its missing something with out those types of abilities that i mentioned.
hypersapien you just explained that strategy quite easily. Seems like it wouldn't take more than five minutes to introduce new placer to the strategy to make them aware of it.
While there's times you might wait a turn or two for efficiency of hand refresh or reading your opponents this is generally not that strong for two reasons. The ten cube maximum and the fact you can execute trades multiple times per card. Cluttering your inventory with 4-6 cubes you cannot use is limiting. While I wouldn't go so far as this is always true it is certainly quite common to really not have the time to wait. Another reason you might not want to wait is your opponents should be setting up for the other contracts that will slot into it's place. I find many games are won by not who has the most coins but who had the most or best contracts.
Excellent! English isn't my first language BUT I really like your videos which are entertaining, informative, and helpful at the same time. Thank you for handover of the the spice dilemma to your audience. It feels like a worker placement game on its own: Buy Spice Road and ignore Eastern Wonder and vice versa. Or just buy both without knowing what the third game will be. Wait for the third game. Or really wait for the big box. Or buy none. Or, or, or ... For now I will postpone my decision. Instead my wife and I will continue our discovery of Through the Ages.
You (and they) also missed yet another option of possibly buying Century: Golem Edition, which is the first game, with far better art, but no promise (as yet) that the 2nd game will come out to combine with.
Tragically wrong, of course, as Spice Road is brilliant, and an absolute all-time 10, but even so it's a pity they never came back to finish the series that concluded with A New World.
Just a quick question -- Century: The New World is out... are you planing on trying all three together? Please let Paul yell profanities at Quinns in the intro again. Brilliant.
Just got a gf who, it turns out, is an innate gamer but finding her own way. I had taught her Spice Road, which she then immediately bought. With Eastern Wonders as a two pack! Never having played Eastern Wonders I went searching…and re-discovered this video! 😂😂😂 still holds up phenomenally!
It's 2024 and Century is fantastic, I love both of those games and is the perfect amount of "euro" for me. Paul's wrong here, these are really great games and as the regular rules master of the group, you gotta love those one-page rules games.
I recall that y'all delivered a split decision on Five Tribes, but I guess that was before the SUSD Recommends badge? Also, you didn't have a half-naked Matt in this video, so maybe that's what makes it different.
I liked century spice road as an easy game to play as an intro game. Then I found the third installment new world. Looking forward to getting eastern game
And then you have Golem Edition of Spice Road which I just got because the art and components are amazing, as a re-theme. I had no idea the games were going to be a trilogy, so now I can't even play the combined game if I get Eastern Wonders. I would have to also buy Spice Road.
They are releasing Golem Editions of the other games as well. Golem version of the 2nd game is Eastern Mountains. 3rd Golem will be revealed this year as it was probably supposed to happen at Gen Con.
Century Golem Edition... thoughts? I've heard it's got a much better theme and better cards which makes the game a bit more exciting. Starting to lean in that direction more than either of these.
Douglas O'Shea It’s the exact same game as Spice Road but with pictures of golems that look 100x cooler than the original. The problem is that there will (supposedly) never be expansions for it and if you wanted to combine it to something like Eastern Wonders, the art styles will really clash. But yes it is a stand-alone game
It's also worth pointing out that someone fro the company was on the boardgame subreddit recently saying they are thinking of expanding the Golem universe as it is a hit with fans
The decision between Splendor and Spice Road: "I love Ticket to Ride but wish it was more elegant." vs. "My friends hooked me on Dominion but I don't have hundreds of dollars."
I appreciate the amount of time and work these guys put into the reviews. However it seems so stupid and strange to me that in almost all of these videos there comes a part where they say "oh, we have this game that has this kind of mechanism. So you should play the first one." cannot someone produce a game, similar to other games? Is it a sin in board game religion? it's like saying to a friend who recommends you a time travel movie that nah man, why someone watch the time-travel-movie-you-recommend instead of watching back to the future. cringe
The difference is that people generally enjoy playing games multiple times. Why buy two similar games when you would be happier playing the first game twice?
So insanely Colourblind unfriendly I end up in a dizzying pile of confussion and needing people to check me all the time :P Golem edition at least somewhat sorts that.
Quintin, have you tried the Ogre edition? Did you like that better than the normal Spice Road? I'm not buying any of the games, before there's a clear "yes" or "no", on the fact if the Ogre Edition is getting expansions/part 2 and 3. Simply because I prefer the Ogre edition, but if I don't have the possibility to combine the games (of course I can combine, but the styles won't fit), I don't feel like buying any yet.
I’m trying to design a board game and am watching your vids for inspiration. Not that you make them, but what I’m trying to say is that you do a good job at reviewing a verity of games. My favourite vid and game is Star Wars rebellion. U lot are awesome
I can't get over how you put your can of coke on a wooden table without a coaster. Respect the wood! You do great work! Enjoy all of your videos. You make it look easy, but I know it's hard work to make it look that way. Just use a coaster next time.
"...like a giddy Mentat."
Loved that Dune reference.
Spice Road and Splendor are so similar, Quinns even calls Spice Road "Splendor" at 5:12 . Lol
After playing splendor for the whole year, and playing Spice Road today it seems so fresh. Much more freedom to tackle the problems of getting VP.
@@jakubgadzala7474 which one seems fresh?
I've missed seeing the Paul/Quinns review combo. Lovely to see it again.
Cute little Dune reference there.
Like a giddy Mentat :)
Oh I thought it was just another British thing...
@@philipselesky8868 that's precisely how I felt :-)
I did a similar Dune reference.... The spice must flow
I'm going to buy it, just so I can make the picture by putting the boxes together.
Oh man what a nice idea of replacing the little cubes with actual spice pods. I am so sick of tiny little cubes. That would make your game smell GREAT.
Oh, SPICE Girls!
I GOT THE JOKE!
Edit: God you two are, like, so cute together? Or something??
Roxfox thank you for pointing it out!
I ship it. I missed Qual.. Pinns.. I missed this when Paul was in Canada.
Hahaha i got it also. Damn we are old :(
Definitely "or something".
They’re not gay. They’re British
Glad to see Paul and Quinns playing off one another. It's like the old days, but with all the lessons that come from having done this for 7-ish years. Keep up the good work.

What are the circumstances?
I could be a bit out of date info-wise, but Paul's back in England because he's had his application for permanent residence in Canada denied and his visa revoked after an exceedingly long period of waiting to even hear if he had been rejected
I bought Eastern Wonders on the strength of this review and it's fantastic, I'm totally with Quinns on this one
"I can't legally stop you..."
Oh dang I lost it there. Great review!
O
Century Golem Edition, I would say, has a lot more visual appeal. It makes me enjoy the game itself just a tad bit more.
Ryan Valdez I hope they make it, that would be great.
It also dodges a good bit of the colonialist themes that this version falls into, especially in the Americas expansion.
Great stuff, cracking review. The “re-enactment” was cold, hard classic SU&SD humour causing my tea to awkwardly spray forth. Worth it 😁
8:36 may be the best thing on the internet. Ever.
Another terrific SU&SD video.
"This doesn't bear thinking about."
A perfect line to end the review with.
This is definitely in my top 5 reviews. You guys are awesome!
You guys are fab! Love to watch your onscreen chemistry and beautifully constructed verbal gymnastics. Long live SUSD!
Yay Paul's back! I love it when you two review games together and Paul's always a joy to watch. Can't wait to see what else you do in the future!
Well you guys nailed it with that prediction at the end. They called it the Century Big Box, it's currently £50 on Zatu (RRP £70) and they seem to have just discontinued the second and third...after we got Spice Road and wanted to complete the set.
Quinns: "Look! It's not *technically* an expansion, it's fine! I'm fine!"
5:12 you say Splendour when you mean Spice Road!
The third game was announced before Spice Road was released. It's called A New World.
Dear god...the reference pearnapple, you maniacs.
Quinns is a global treasure.
Past 2020 and yet no BigBox with all 3 games in sight... but possibly a review about the third game and the resulting 3 possible combos with the others? :D

Woof, the art. Looks like it's trying to impress people who only intake visual art for extended periods of time through Euro games. Cudgeon That's a great point!
I think the component colors are bold and unique throughout. I love all the pink...
Quinns call the game "Splendor" at 5:15. :)
To be fair, I think he also mentioned his "despicion space" at one point.

This made the difference between me being okayish about the game, and really twisting my brain around it. It's still fairly low on interaction though.

They are releasing Golem Editions of the other games as well. Golem version of the 2nd game is Eastern Mountains. 3rd Golem will be revealed this year as it was probably supposed to happen at Gen Con.
Years later and I still don't understand why you're collecting chili from the east. I also still miss Paul.
You guys just keep getting better and better
Century Golem Edition... thoughts? I've heard it's got a much better theme and better cards which makes the game a bit more exciting. Starting to lean in that direction more than either of these.
So the Golum edition isn't a stand alone version of this game?
Douglas O'Shea It’s the exact same game as Spice Road but with pictures of golems that look 100x cooler than the original. The problem is that there will (supposedly) never be expansions for it and if you wanted to combine it to something like Eastern Wonders, the art styles will really clash. But yes it is a stand-alone game
It's also worth pointing out that someone fro the company was on the boardgame subreddit recently saying they are thinking of expanding the Golem universe as it is a hit with fans
Golem will happen. Just wait for it.
OH HECK YES! Everyone was yelling at them to expand it, but they just kept saying they wouldn't do anything more
I could have sworn you (particularly Quinns) were going to recommend Concordia at the end. Haha
Yay Brighton! Eastern Wonders looks more fun. I'll probably wait till the third comes out.
:Politely avoids pointing at Paul's comb-over:
:Als avoids staring at Paul's band-aid which so perfectly matches his skintone:
The decision between Splendor and Spice Road:
"I love Ticket to Ride but wish it was more elegant." vs. "My friends hooked me on Dominion but I don't have hundreds of dollars."
Instead of a big box edition in 2020 we got the Golem Edition of the entire series by 2020.
Why is it that EVERY time I watch y’all I need a whiskey!? CHEERS...
Wait really? A month's rent in England is 2 boardgames?
1:02 Black box, where have you BEEN?! :)

Combining twister and . . . water. Both are popular games here,
Great video guys, really entertaining and good to see your point of view 👍🏻
#WithAClove
What? 30 pounds is a month's rent in London?!
I think I might like the painting hanging in the background at 10:33, anyone know who painted that?
"like a giddy Mentat"
Nice.
"WE WILL FUCKING DIE!" - Winston Churchill
Did Quinns try to slit Paul's throat? Noticed the band-aid.
This review might be spicy, but you guys are really sweet
yes. Lot of sugar there
So insanely Colourblind unfriendly I end up in a dizzying pile of confussion and needing people to check me all the time :P
Golem edition at least somewhat sorts that.
I like Spice Road, but Golem edition is prettier and more enjoyable. The artwork for it is fantastic and cutesy.
Although named after the guy who made pacific rim, Jägermeister can be made on any island.
Where does he live in London that a months rent is only £60??!?
this game seems a lot like concordia, i'm quite surprised that it wasn't mentioned during the review.
Your best review ever!!! I laughed my ass off.
