Shivani, greetings from the US! This is an excellent video that explains and demonstrates how to varnish with wax medium for gouache paintings! ❤Your paintings are lovely! Thank you!
ooh didnt think this stuff would also work on gouache! very good to know😀i would spend so much time playing with the water drops on the paper, so much fun to move around lol
Hello! This video was very useful!! I just had a little question- does this varnish, like other liquid varnishes used for acrylics and oils- give the painting a glossy finish that makes it reflective? This is kind of a big deal for me, since the matte property of gouache is one of the biggest reasons why I like it so much, so i thought I'd ask. Thanks!
It doesn't make it too glossy! It's quite waxy and matte, which is why I like it. But you will definitely be able to tell that something has been applied. If you ever want to make prints of your work, I'd recommend scanning BEFORE you varnish.
It doesn't yellow :) As long as your painting has completely dried, there shouldn't be any issue of smudging either. If you're concerned, try a test patch before applying it onto your final painting!
Thank you for the info, I had a problem with paintings rubbing their colors on each other in a sketchbook, I hope sealing them with varnish will stop it.
Hiii i have decor gloss varnish but when i applied it on my gouche painted it just mixed all my colours into each other can u pls tell me how to use the liquid varnish on my painting. Thank you
Hi :) I've honestly not used liquid varnish on gouache so I can't say for sure. But if one varnish isn't working out, it's best to try another. From my research, Dorland's Wax seemed to be the safest bet and I've never faced any issues with it. And always do a test patch before applying any varnish onto your actual painting.
I haven't experimented with it myself yet, but I've done a lot of reading and it's not ideal. It can cause running or even discolouration of pigments over time. Dorland's is your best bet.
Im really scared to put anything on my gouache paintings because I make really intricate details n im afraid it will merge. Will it? Help. I use nevskayapalitra gouache paints.
I've tested this out extensively and I've never faced any issues (with Winsor and Newton gouache at least). I'd recommend doing a test. Just paint out swatches of all your colours and apply the wax varnish over them. If you don't face issues with the test swatches, it's unlikely you'll face issues when applying it on your final paintings too. :)

As a beginner, how to prevent smudging during application? Does the coating yellow?

Thank you for your reply. I live in India and I cannot find this wax can u send me the link or tell any alternate option
Can You use this on metallic guache. Also what does it smell like? as in chemical thanks
The smell is pretty neutral IMO! And yes I think it should be suitable for metallic gouache as well.
Can we use winsor & newton’s fixative as varnish for Gouache?
