The Crate Escape: Two mother pigs rescued from cruel cages

- We’ve rescued two mother pigs who had been kept in cruel crates barely bigger than their bodies and were due to be killed for meat.
Before their rescue these pigs were kept in farrowing crates to produce multiple litters of piglets at a farm in the UK.
Every year on UK farms, thousands of mother pigs are confined for up to five weeks around the time they give birth, in farrowing crates - cages so small they can’t even turn around - this causes them physical and mental suffering.
Claire Bass, senior director of campaigns and public affairs at HSI/UK, said: “Across the UK right now 200,000 mother pigs are hidden away suffering behind bars. Such big numbers can mask the fact that each one is an intelligent, sensitive individual, which is why it is so important that we are able to rescue and tell the stories of these two mums.
Few people would dream of keeping a dog confined in a metal crate so small they couldn’t even turn around for five long weeks, and our Crate Escape campaign aims to create the same compassion and respect for pigs.
We’re urging all governments in the UK, as well as retailers, to commit to supporting farmers financially to get rid of these cruel and unnecessary cages for mothers.”
Thanks to your support, our rescued pigs are now living at Hopefield Animal Sanctuary in Brentwood, Essex, where they will be free to stretch their legs on grass, root around in the mud, and carry out all the other natural behaviours that were denied to them before their rescue, but sadly, most pigs are not this lucky.

5 facts about Pigs! Pigs are one of the smartest animals in the world. They have the intelligence of a child from 3 years old! More intelligent than dogs or some primates. They are very clean animals. They cannot swet so in warm stables it is complete horror for them. They can only cool down in the mud. They have a very strong memory they can rember things years later. They like to rub against things and love music. So it is disgusting what humans do to this animals. Thank you so much for saving these 2 souls!

The sad, haunted look in these pigs' eyes says so much. That last pig at the end of the video, resting peacefully while the lady caresses him, looks so grateful to be rescued. Such expressive eyes and souls.

Bonne opération de sauvetage ! Ce n'est que 2 truies mais c'est mieux que rien. On voit la différence entre les cages où elles étaient enfermées, immobilisées et les enclos où elles ont été transférés. Plus grand, avec de la paille et surtout accès à une cour où elles peuvent marcher ! Bien mieux pour elle même si les réactions émotionnelles ne sont pas vraiment expressives !
