I think Lou is possibly the creepiest movie character I've ever seen in my life. Just look at those empty, soulless eyes. It's like gazing into a void that slowly sucks you in but you can't stop watching. Hell, I don't know what acting wizardry Jake Gyllenhaal did, but he hardly looks human in this role. God I'm going to have so many nightmares tonight.
I'd only rank Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), The Joker (Heath Ledger), and Jack Torrence (Jack Nicholson) above him. But he's definitely up there as one of the creepiest performances.
Yeah but there are othere stuning performances that year : benedict cumberbatch ( imitation game ), Michael Keaton ( Birdman ), Steve carell ( the Foxcatcher ), Bradley Cooper ( american sniper), Thats why its hard to choose, and Eddie redmayne who won the oscar that year with his unbelievable performance in the theory of everything
Saw this on Netflix and I was really surprised. Starts off a bit slow but then it gets really good. This movie is definately disturbing and almost traumatic, but in a good way haha. After it finished I had to just sit in silence with my head down, hands clasped together and take a deep breath just to process it and decompress. Theres a lot to be learned from this film, about the good AND bad sides of ambition.
+Afghan Jesus what's genius about this film is how it focuses more on the good side of ambition, contrary to the viewers expectations. the movie sets up this situation in which you're constantly thinking something will go wrong for this disgusting character. and at the end, that moment never came, he just became succesfull. this movie shows how society is organised to reward sociopaths. genius
I think that line "I would never ask you do to anything that I wouldn't do myself" sums up Jake's character perfectly. It lulls his partner into such a false sense of security of "Okay so this dude is fair he wont push" when we know that he will do literally anything to achieve the goals he sets. Completely summarises the complete sociopathy of Jake's character in retrospect
This is definitely one of those movies that gets under your skin. Initially, my sister and I were on the fence about it because of how dark it was, and the depth and brazenness of the main character's sociopathic approach to life was friggin' outrageous. After a short while, though, we couldn't stop talking about it. Personally, I liked the movie a lot.

The Riddle Man 7235 I have just wanted to comment, I thought about the same thing and then I saw your comment. Yes, I agree that he would make the perfect Joker. :)
The character he plays here is a psychopath, I wouldn’t say the Joker is a psychopath, but considering how adaptive Jake’s acting skills are I think he could possibly play an interesting Joker
Steven Dowens but Arthur had sympathy. He was caring until he had enough. Louis is manipulative, and unsympathetic. He literally had no real emotion through the whole movie. All his emotions were fake and planned, he did everything that would satisfy him, he was extremely selfish. He basically killed his employee without actually killing him himself, he tricked him. He’s a psychopath just minus the killing. Arthur, is a sociopath, he has emotions.

I think one of Jake Gyllenhaals genius moves is that his character never blinks. He always has this weird stare, that you'd find in weird people, which perfectly fits this role.
It’s truly surprising how the emotional intensity builds throughout this film. (Kinda sneaks up on you, really.) Gyllenhaal is an absolute monster in both the best and worst ways in this movie, in that the character is a totally barbaric sociopath, and that Jake had the brilliant acting chops to nail that character to a tee. Oscar-worthy performance, no question.
Would had this been a great television series? Telling the story of how a production business started and how it crumbles at the end. With the snappy writing and a great performance with Jake Gyllenhaal, I think it would have been another breaking bad.
Just watched this now, everybody said jack, but can we appreciate the partner? His acting is very good. This movie is intense man. 10/10

Best film of '14, hands down!
What about whiplash man?
Daniel Staab haven't seen it yet. Neither Birdman, A Most Violent Year, Inherent Vice, or Foxcatcher. They haven't premiered in my country yet.
Birdman was awesome, havent seen inherent vice but i love PTA so ill have to give that a check
Shibby Norton john wick
rzorNvme Haha...no
I think one of Jake Gyllenhaals genius moves is that his character never blinks. He always has this weird stare, that you'd find in weird people, which perfectly fits this role.
This film is a gem.
Jake Gyllenhaal is an amazing actor!
I've watched so many movies with Jake and everytime he does it again. He's an amazing actor!
Anyone after mukundan unni.. 👌🏻👀
An unforgettable film.
One of the most inspirational movies I've ever seen. Makes me want to work hard and pursue my dreams.
One of the best films I've seen in 20 years
"Congratulations, you're hired"
Would had this been a great television series? Telling the story of how a production business started and how it crumbles at the end. With the snappy writing and a great performance with Jake Gyllenhaal, I think it would have been another breaking bad.
Jake gyllenhaal went from bubble boy to this. This guy is a spectacular actor
Part 2 would be amazing!! 🎉
damn glad that i watched the movie before watching the trailer
Same sir I am also happy tjat i watched it before the trailer
he would play an amazing Joker.
Something that creeped me out is all the management terms he used. I've heard the same words at work, many times...
At the end, he was not the first at the scene. He was the scene - unfolding.
His acting is terrific 🤯
amazing move.
Gyllenhaal is an amazing actor, the oscars def snubbed him
