Standing, not running. We are still British, after all.
I doubt you will ever run out of stories to tell when you're old and gray!

I remember seeing that at the time, but I didn't twig until I saw this video that it was Tom.
Holy crap!!
They really should've mentioned Tom by name in the article though.
@@notthere83 He wasn't really famous at the time... His RUclips career started around 2013/14, and the article is from 2011.

This man basically hid the parts of the costume like they where infinity stones
We need to bring them together to defeat coronavirus.
Some say, when the world needs him the most, the dedicated followers of Mad Cap'n Tom will track down his costume, bring them to a forgotten altar, and summon him back to this world to sail our civilisation back to safety
At least they're not horcruxes
@@NotKyleChicago They are. Mad Cap'n Tom's essence is in each part.
I'm surprised this isn't top-rated, because it took me about 0.042 seconds to think this joke up myself when I heard that bit. Classic fantasy trope.
We need to start a Kickstarter: "Rescue Mad Cap'n Tom" with the goal of relocating all of the pieces and finding a way to have Tom lose another bet.
(no we don't, but I find the idea hilarious)
Do it do it
mail him a new outfit and get him a pet duck
mad capt'n tom died. But we can find his stuff that got lost at sea
@@kwibloupthesomething Someone needs to do this.
The completed costume gets mailed to Tom in a briefcase, which he then cements into the floor of his basement á la John Wick
18:57 "Brian the Duck is somewhere in North America , I don't know what's happened to him."
18:58 Duck flies past in the background.
"HE CAME BACK!!"
+WorldNews92 Yeah that timing was funny.
Perfect timing, that duck!
Right?
Does it weigh more than a witch?
I'm sure that was a pigeon.
To this day, it is said that if you collect and reunite them at the port at Mevagissey; Mad Cap'n Tom will manifest his presence once more, then promptly tell you to sod off before diving into the sea, because seriously why would you waste all that time for that?
Best reunite-the-pieces joke in the thread.
"Actually Competent"
That'd swing it for me, to be honest.
10 years later A video appears of a barely alive man in pirate garb washed up on a beach
Tom Williams Productions a river beach, 136 km inland
Funny...I read that as "...washed up on a bench." :-)
that’s basically the ending of you dont know jack volume 6
That’s the start of monty python basically
7 year countdown
I dream of an alternate universe where Tom won the election, and someone had to gather up all the horcruxes of his costume to defeat him.
Tom, with those memories it certainly was not a waste of time or money. As to your joke about last seen heading east the story told of sailors retiring from the sea is that they put an oar on their shoulder and start walking inland. When they get to a place where someone asks what it is he has onhis shoulder that is where he stops walking and settles down.
+richb313 So within about 100 m from the docks.
Seems about right. :)
Fun Fact: That bit comes from the Odyssey, and it was commanded to Odysseus by Athena to walk inland with his oar until someone asked if it was a farming tool, and then to plant the oar in the ground there and settle down.
Odd, I remember it as a sailor walking inland with an anchor over his shoulder. When a local asks him what he's doing with that funny- looking pickax, he plants it and settles there.
@@garrettdesoto1740 Well, not to settle there in his case but rather to make an offering to Poseidon there
@@rcknbob1 how large of an anchor? How large of an oar?
If they came from the same vessel, I'd take the oar any day, especially since its purpose is to carry it as far inland that it stops being the port town, and no other use beyond that.
I have a suspicion we haven't seen the last of Mad Cap'n Tom. Someday, somewhere, Tom will place another sure bet....
18:58 While Tom is telling us that Brian the Duck is somewhere in North America, a duck flies overhead. You can't script a better photobomb (videobomb?) than that.
Now that Tom is retired, this leaves a perfect space for the return of a certain salty sailor MAD CAP’N TOM WILL RISE AGAIN
Don't under sell yourself Tom, you got 84 not 83!
he didn't count his own vote i'd assume
Its a shame about the prirate party though otherwise he may be got more votes
"Brian the Duck Went to the New World", there's a children's book in there somewhere. Brilliant story. I'm really enjoying the park benches. More, I say.

Tom: I hated school politics
Also Tom: I'll fuckin do it again.
There is now one of your viewers that has taken it upon themselves to locate and reassemble mad cap'n Toms costume
Who?
No idea just someone will have taken it as a challenge
Yep, there's always someone.
You know what's really kinda crazy? If this had happened to anyone other than Tom Scott, Tom Scott would be the one to try to reassemble the Mad Cap'n Tom costume.
I think it'd be matt trying to do it with tom helping
+Benkia09 too much effort, especially with the travel involved
Fully fledged mallard attached to the brim of the tricorn is such a beautiful sentence.
Anyone else suddenly wish there was a series about the misadventures of Mad Cap'n Tom while he's lost at sea? I'd watch that. Especially if Tom was forced to play the role
...Excuse me while I try my best to recreate the costume and then find Tom in real life and go up to him, smiling like an idiot.
One day Matt will be in a bad mood, the intro will be "Hi, I am mad." "and I am Tom." Just an out of context thought.
Edit: It should not be 'the end' but 'the dang'
Sadly no more
@Chaitanya Singh | ...why? Has something happened?
@@DragonFang409 the park bench ended
To be honest, I think losing that bet somehow counts as winning in this case. Because seriously... >_> Running for office while dressed as a pirate?
I'm going to assume your platform was... wooden, and the most important policy proposal was extra grog rations for the entire UK. (Well it's an island, it's KIND of like a ship. A ship that doesn't move. And is made of rocks and dirt and maybe bricks.* Not sure about the number of blackpowder cannons...)
*Blame Gary.
Cutlasses for all, I believe. The campaign page still exists somewhere, I saw it last year!
Also acceptable!
Found it! -- www.madcapntom.co.uk/old/
I was remembering the swordsmanship training, the actual promise is for... duct tape?
Glorious, absolutely glorious
I love how the joke with the whole Mad Cap'n Tom bit is that Tom finds his way into ridiculous sitautions and by just being a normal guy is more compotent than those around him
17:45 You described the correct idea, but it's the other way around. The news clipping has you sailing *west* from Mevagissey Bay, which in reality faces *east* towards Plymouth, Kingsbridge and the English Channel.
I love how he had a stuffed duck considering he was also responsible for acquiring ducks for the duck pond at York 😂
That's odd. I've been a Tom Scott fan for a while, and I just looked up that election result. The Lib Dem in that seat that year is a friend of mine...
Good video Tom Spock! (:
the "This guy Sucks" sign hahahhahaha
Ikr. I saw that and my mind immediately went to the Westboro Baptist Church, and for some reason, the extremely well-placed rainbow LGBT pride house right in front of it (which is awesome because it is like a punch in the nuts for Westboro)
@@richardmillhousenixon except WBC is now a reclusive authoritarian cult instead of a really weird and objectionable family church that does public demonstrations. Same diff, I guess.
Tom I'd wondered why your face was so familiar. You were a mini celebrity at James Cook University's allied health department in Townsville Australia in 2007. ...and then talk like a pirate day was eclipsed by no pants day...
Did he go to Townsville?
@@edab9088 nah he went to york
Fitting, that.
MPs are more commonly thought of as equivalent to American Representatives; the Senate is normally paralleled to the House of Lords. There's no exact equivalence, but importantly the Houses of Commons and Representatives are the bodies with primary control over the national budget.
It's easier to understand if you're Canadian.
+Tyler McHenry Oh definitely. The House of Lords and Senate are both classified as upper houses, and the House of Commons and House of Representatives are both lower houses.
JSQuareD plus, the consituancies in the House of Representatives and Commons are determined by population, where as the Senate and House of Lords are determined differently.
Oasis is back. Time for the Mad Cap'n to sail his way back to our shores
I remember seeing "Mad Cap'n Tom" on the ballot amd being very confused!!
This is one heck of a story, you should be proud of it :D
Yeah it is :)

April 1st makes me suspicious....but the video and photographic evidence is compelling...
+joolzzenda I've checked Wikipedia, and this is all true. He got 84 votes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cities_of_London_and_Westminster_(UK_Parliament_constituency)#Elections_in_the_2010s
I wouldn't put it past them to edit a wikipedia article :P Nah, I'm sure it's true I'm just so skeptical of everything on April fools day
+joolzzenda Thankfully, you can check the edit history of a Wikipedia article.
Yep. Last edit was on the 15th of March. And even if it had been edited, it'd be up for minutes at most before it got reverted, were it not true.
+joolzzenda If its a prank, t's pretty darn well planed!

◻ David Cameron
◻ Teresa May

This could easily be mistaken as an April Fools joke
He gave the legend of what happened to all the parts. They must be gathered and re-assembled. Thou hath given us a quest! it's like a map to pirate treasure, some sort of legend.
ok I'm genuinely disappointed that the manifesto is privated now
"A complete ban on unexpected items in the bagging area."
there is an alternate universe where tom won or ran in a less secure place and won. that would have been hilarious
I remember being about 15 or whatever and seeing this, pretty sure it and the subsequent discovery of all the other bits on your website is the reason I've been following your work ever since!
I like how the fake newspaper clipping mentions a time travel device, which is kinda funny when you consider that Tom's second-greatest prank, which could be considered payback to Tim for signing him up for the student election, involved a time travel plot. 😅
I love that Tom put a little tidbit on the site that makes it so that if he wants to, he could bring back Mad Cap'n Tom.
Oh my God! It might be my brain making things up, but I *remember* a LONG time ago hearing about a guy running for political office as a pirate!
Holy cow, imagine, his influence might somehow have reached rural Nebraska!
i don't know if my memory is making this up but i swear i saw a bit of trivia years ago about a guy running for parliament in a pirate costume, though i imagine it's not a particularly rare occurrence?
Used to be a guy in the next county from mine who ran as "Mike the Mover" in every election, as whatever he could, until he drank the Trump kool-aid and got assimilated. I don't think he was ever intentionally being funny, though.
What's mental is that this year Cities of London and Westminster have gone Labour
Aaahhh but the tories were not popular at all
@LivWatson-ss8go yeah, my point is just that it shows just how unpopular the Tories are that even cities of London and Westminster went
‘The frilly shirt went off to a charity shop”
Ah. I see Tom was the inspiration for Seinfeld.
Matt Capt. Tom vs Lord Buckethead
Epic!
So what your saying is, if I travel the world and find all the pieces of this costume, I could put it back together and recreate Mad Cap'n Tom like the infinity stones.
Tom's afraid to run now because he knows he'd win.

Putting it here to jinx it.
What a coincidence. "I don't know what happened to [Brian the Duck]" and within like a second, a bird (possibly Brian the Duck :-) ) flies through the top of the frame.
You didn't look out of place at all in that super blurry photo.
Hey, aside from a wonderful story, you have the experience. For all the grief that went with it, you have that experience. You fell into it and ran with it. It appeals to the crazy in me. Probably something I would have done at 20 and regretted at 25 and revel in now.
Had I lived in Westminster and been 18 at the time, I would've voted for you.
Tom has had such an interesting life! I'm so envious
12:50 my favourite "linguist" joke. "He was so conservative he wanted a revolution" :v
...cause... you know... revolvere... you know, move backwards kinda in latin? *sweats profusely while explaining "joke"*
If the change is positive it would be evolution, when it goes backwards it is revolution (pronounced re-volution). At least literally.
20 years later.... The duck is back and he needs the Capt's help!
Tom could win the lottery by making a bet that included "Mad Cap'n Tom"

Can I help?
I literally just finished watching hellsing ultimate
The manifesto video is now private - probably because of the recent YT change that all unlisted videos before 2017 went private. Tom or Matt, if you see this and change it back to unlisted, please let me know. I’d love to watch it!
If there is ever a Tom Scott movie, then the McGuffin that drives the plot HAS to be the Mad Capt'n Tom costume.
Tom Scott and the Mad Cap'n Hunt
imagine collecting all the parts of the costume and sending it to him
I always love listening to this story. It's very educational and entertaining. You should be proud to tell it!

7:23 That guys face is priceless. Absolutely priceless.
I wish running for office was like this here in the US!
I mean, anyone can run for free, you can just be a write-in for anything. But I want to be a formal candidate, invited to all these events to meet prominent political members and all that!
Arr, I be seein' the story a' comin' of a young pirate-to-be, takin' themselves on a grand adventure to reassemble the relics of Mad Cap'n Tom....
i love that the obituary mentions how the suposedly old timey london ledger has suspiciously modern type of letter so must be timetravel
These adventures of Mad Cap'n Tom sounds so fun!
Just imagine if he went further with this.
I was about to say I remember that, but something tells me I hadn't discovered your channel yet 6 years ago, so I must have gone through all your videos once I did.
Now that's what I call a story!
I hope somebody finds all the pieces and sends them back to Tom.
If someone ever manages to find and send the entire costume back to Tom, please also send him the request to fully cremate it.
If I had a nickel for every time a British youtuber ran for a position of power in politics, I'd have 3 nickels. It ain't much but it's weird that it happened 3 times
