    I'm currently watching an anime set in the Heian period. I noticed the characters all have a "no" between their surnames and given names. Like Minomoto no Raikou.
    What I want to know is does the no mean something like from or of, as in Raikou of the Minamoto clan? As well about when does the no stop getting used because I don't see people from future historical periods with the no in their name.
    I have a similar question about emperors with a Go in front of their names.

    • @anikihistory
      @anikihistory  Год назад +1

      "no" (の) is a possessive particle in Japanese so you're right, it would mean "of" like Taira no Masakado (Masakado of the Taira). But i've seen names use the "no" and i've also seen them without it 😁
      "Go" as in "Go-Shirakawa" is written with the Kanji 後 which means behind/back/later, so i guess it's something like "the later Shirakawa"!

    • @anikihistory
      @anikihistory  Год назад +3

      While i didn't research this in detail yet, it seems like in some cases, women even served as soldiers! The cousin of Yoritomo that i mentioned in a video (the guy who took over Kyoto for a while) had a woman in his army who became quite legendary, her name was Tomoe.
      Generally though, i guess the "servant" ranks were actually still pretty high ranks in society at the time, and with women rarely making it to high-ranking positions back then i'd say it was at least a very, very rare occurence!
      Would be a very interesting future topic for a video though, thanks for the inspiration 😁
